Editorial Review:

The first edition of this book has quickly become the best-selling guide for Wi-Fi users around the world. Master technical author, Jeff Duntemann, makes tangled Wi-Fi technological issues very comprehensible. Jeff explains the blizzard of Wi-Fi concepts and standards, including the new 802.11g, the complex and fluky security issues, and shows users how to protect themselves from both obvious and non-obvious threats. He also covers the human element in the Wi-Fi movement, including hacker threats and Wi-Fi communities. Jeff's coverage of wardriving has been highly praised by many Wi-Fi experts and the top Wi-Fi Web sites. Many technical drawings clarify difficult concepts, with abundant Web pointers to further information. The book features numerous hands-on projects that can dramatically increase the performance of home and small business Wi-Fi systems. Some of the important and new topics covered in the book include:
  • Money-saving Wi-Fi network design and implementation techniques
  • Wi-Fi communities
  • Access points and gateways
  • Security and privacy
  • Wireless security auditing with WarLinux and Kismet
  • The art of wardriving
  • How to create powerful low-cost antennas

Unorganized textbook 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 13 people found this review helpful.

this book is not good for the beginner in wireless communication. I have to use this textbook, because it's the requirement form my instructor.

the author didn't organize this book as well as he should. All equations are not well explained...Sometime the students need to guess where this variable stands for or what parameter's meaning is. He wrote like the literature or drama.....no space for equation's explanation...all of them are in the same paragrah.

i really don't recommend this textbook and i still don't understand why my instructor uses this text

Great wireless networking resource 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Peter and Barry have documented tons of good information on wireless networks in this book. From Wi-Fi to Bluetooth to site surveys to security and even throwing in great reference material on RF, wireless standards, and more. Even after working with 802.11 wireless networks for several years, I've learned a good bit from this book in a very short time. I especially like the neat wireless tools and other wireless Internet resources they present. Just like most of the other For Dummies books, Wireless Networks For Dummies is practical, real-world, and more than enough to get started. I challenge anyone to find a more comprehensive book on this hot topic.

Editorial Review:

  • An easy, practical guide to wireless networks, which allow users to roam wireless-enabled locations without being restricted by cables
  • Shows step by step what it takes to plan a wireless network, set it up, make it work, and keep it safe
  • Along the way, expert authors Davis and Lewis explain how to perform a site survey and explore issues such as selecting the right standard, mode, access point, channel, and antenna
  • Explains how to install clients, set up roaming, and guard against risks and threats such as war driving, jamming, hijacking, and man-in-the-middle attacks
  • Contains useful information on IEEE wireless standards, security vulnerabilities, administration tools, and places to connect while on the road

Editorial Review:

UWB (ultra-wideband) has been investigated for many decades but only recently has it become commercially viable. With the advent of WiMedia UWB technology and its associated standard specifications, the stage is set for the next generation of WPAN applications to take root.

WiMedia UWB  focuses on the ECMA-368 standard. Both PHY layer and MAC sublayers specified in this standard are explained in great detail. The book offers not only the facts about the requirements of the standard, but also the motivation and logic behind them. To give a comprehensive perspective of the UWB technology to the reader, other interrelated topics are also examined in this book. These include the history of UWB and its recent standardization attempts; UWB applications and advantages; UWB spectrum allocation and regulations around the world; UWB platform clients: Certified Wireless USB (CW-USB), Bluetooth, and WLP (WiMedia Link layer Protocol, which enables Internet Protocol over UWB); as well as some important implementation issues and considerations. As the first application of WiMedia UWB, CW-USB is given a special and more comprehensive treatment.

This book is ideal for any engineer or engineering managers who are expecting to either develop a solution based on UWB or to integrate it with other devices. It will also be of interest to researchers who require an overview or an interpretation of the technology.

  • One of the first books to describe the WiMedia standards (PHY and MAC) in detail
  • A comprehensive approach to de-obfuscating the entire WiMedia UWB technology, from the PHY through the MAC, the MAC clients, the applications, and the regulations
  • Includes a description of the CW-USB standard and its relation to WiMedia MAC
  • Provides an up-to-date view of the UWB spectrum allocations and associated regulations around the world
  • Derived from hands-on experiences in WiMedia UWB standards and system development efforts.

Editorial Review:

The IMS: IP Multimedia Concepts and Services in the Mobile Domain, Second Edition, builds on the success of the previous best-selling edition, providing comprehensive coverage of IMS –  its concepts, architecture, protocols and functionalities with a wealth of new and updated material.

Mobile telephony with the current technology has been hugely successful and demonstrates the immense value of communicating with peers while being mobile, and with increasingly available smarter multimedia terminals, the communication experience will be something more than just exchanging voice. These multimedia terminals need IP multimedia networks. Hence the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has developed a standard for SIP-based IP multimedia service machinery known as ‘The IMS’ (IP Multimedia Subsystem). This completely up-to-date and informative guide explains everything you need to know about it...

Key features of the Second Edition include:

  • Two new chapters on push-to-talk over cellular and group management.
  • Additional new material includes: fixed and mobile convergence, interworking between IPv4 and IPv6 in the IMS, combined circuit-switched and IMS services (combinational services), IMS security and alternative session establishment procedures.
  • More coverage of the benefits of IMS, particularly with regard to its role in fixed-mobile convergence.
  • Special emphasis on services, featuring more detailed descriptions of presence, messaging, group management and push-to-talk over cellular (conferencing).
  • Updates on Third Generation Partnership Project Agreement (3GPP) Release 6 level.
  • New examples and case studies, including a variety of scenarios, how to handle multiple terminals and end-user preferences.

Written in a manner that allows readers to choose the level of knowledge and understanding they need to gain about the IMS, this volume will have instant appeal to a wide ranging audience including marketing managers, research and development engineers, network engineers, developes, test engineers and university students.

    Editorial Review:

Wireless networking is poised to have a massive impact on communications, and the 802.11 standard is to wireless networking what Ethernet is to wired networking. There are already over 50 million devices using the dominant IEEE 802.11 (essentially wireless Ethernet) standard, with astronomical growth predicted over the next 10 years. New applications are emerging every day, with wireless capability being embedded in everything from electric meters to hospital patient tracking systems to security devices.

This practical reference guides readers through the wireless technology forest, giving them the knowledge, the hardware and the software necessary to design a wireless embedded device rapidly, inexpensively, and effectively. Using off-the-shelf microcontrollers from Microchip and Atmel, the author provides step-by-step instructions for designing the hardware and firmware for a fully operational wireless networking device. The book gives a thorough introduction to 802.11 technology and puts it into perspective against the other wireless standard options. Just enough theory and mathematics is provided to give the depth of understanding needed for practical design work.

    The book thoroughly covers:
    * Laptop wireless Ethernet card introduction and theory
    *Introduction to CompactFlash-to-microcontroller interfacing
    * Implementing the laptop wireless Ethernet card in an embedded environment

In addition, the book includes a CDROM containing all of the code, schematics and programs necessary to implement embedded 802.11 wireless networking.

    * Covers the hottest new embedded market area- wireless networking

    * Shows designers how to save money and time by using microcontrollers in their embedded wireless designs instead of expensive, complex prefab boards

    * CD-ROM accompanying book contains all the code, schematics and programs necessary to get started now!
