Excellent for Undgrad Course 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm currently taking a Feedback Control Theory course at the undergrad level, and I think this book is an excellent exposition of classical control theory. Our text for the course is Feedback Control of Dynamic Systems, written by people from Stanford. Schaum's Outline actually has more *theory* than the textbook we are using. It eliminates all of the frills and pretty colored diagrams in favor of exposing everything an undergraduate would have trouble with. And for those people who think the emphasis is only on problem solving, this "Outline" has more mathematical proof than the book from Stanford I just mentioned! I highly recommend using this book to get off on the right foot in control systems, whether you are an engineer just learning the material or an undergraduate; it solidifies the foundations of the theory so that practical problems will come more easily. Also, it is a practical book as well.

Editorial Review:

If you want top grades and thorough understanding of feedback and control systems--both analog and digital--in less study time, this powerful study tool is the best tutor you can have! It takes you step-by-step through the subject and gives you accompanying problems with fully worked solutions--plus hundreds of additional problems with answers at the end of chapters, so you can measure your progress. You also get the benefit of clear, detailed illustrations. Famous for their clarity, wealth of illustrations and examples--and lack of tedious detail--Schaum's Outlines have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. This guide will show you why!

I have used this text in our PLC class for three years. I really like that it is specific to Allan Bradley products. The workbook that goes with this text has programming assignments to reinforce the concepts. As I train on AB SLC500s exclusively, it is almost ideal. I say almost becaue there are many references to obsolete instructions used with a PLC no longer manufactured. It is due for a new edition. But until then, it remains a very good text to teach from, or if you simply want to know more about the subject.

Editorial Review:

This outstanding text for the first course in programmable logic controllers (PLCs) focuses on how PLCs work and gives students practical information about installing, programming, and maintaining PLC systems. It's not intended to replace manufacturer's or user's manuals, but rather complements and expands on the information contained in these materials. All topics are covered in small segments. Students systematically carry out a wide range of generic programming exercises and assignments.

Editorial Review:

Motivate Students with Real-World Control Systems Emphasizing the practical application of control systems engineering, this 3rd edition with its updated contents will motivate students to learn how to analyze and design feedback control systems that support today's advanced technology. Motivation is obtained through clear and complete explanations of how to design real-world systems. Topics are presented in a logical and progressive way that builds and supports understanding. Whenever possible, new concepts are first presented from a qualitative perspective to help students gain the insight needed to develop sound designs. Next, a detailed discussion of quantitative tools gives readers the ability to design parameters and configurations for systems they will encounter during their career. And with the use of MATLAB, students will find out how to apply the latest computer methods to the analysis and design of control systems. Key Features of the Third Edition Case studies, using the same system progressively, are integrated throughout the text to provide students with a realistic view of each stage of the control system design process. A methodology with clearly defined steps is presented for each type of design problem. Numerous in-chapter examples and skill-assessment exercises, as well as end-of-chapter review questions and problems, including a progressive analysis and design problem that uses the same system, are provided. An introduction to state-space methods of analysis and design is included. These sections are clearly marked and can be taught along with classical methods, taught separately, or skipped without loss of continuity. Tutorials are provided on how to use MATLAB, the Control System Toolbox, Simulink, and the Symbolic Math Toolbox to analyze and design control systems. Also included are tutorials on how to use two MATLAB graphical user interface (GUI) design and analysis tools - the LTI Viewer and the Root Locus Design GUI. All tutorials and MATLAB code are contained in the text's appendices so as not to detract from the teaching of control systems engineering principles. References to these appendices are provided at appropriate places in the text. An accompanying CD-ROM provides valuable additional material, such as stand-alone computer applications, electronic files of the text's computer programs for use with MATLAB, additional appendices, and solutions to skill-assessment exercises. Illustrations from the book in the form of electronic files are available at http://www wiley.com/college/nise

A pretty good text on state space control theory. Quite thorough, but the examples were not clear enough. A good description of pole-placement methods and kalman filters (observers).

Very good text on state space 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm a profesor whose taught out of this test twice for a graduate-level course on state space and modern control. This text is a joy to use - well written, clearly exmpained examples, and well thought out organization. I highly recommend it!

Editorial Review:

One thesis of this book is that state-space methods can be presented in a style that can be grasped by the engineer who is more interested in using the results than in proving them. Another thesis is that results are useful. The book is addressed not only to students but also to a general audience of engineers and scientists who are interested in becoming familiar with state-space methods either for direct application to control system design or as a background for reading the periodical literature. The author has tried to keep the chapters reasonably independent and to use customary symbols wherever practical. He has also selected fifteen or so examples and weaved them into the fabric of the text and the homework problems.

Editorial Review:

This book provides an introduction to the mathematics needed to model, analyze, and design feedback systems. It is an ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate students, and is indispensable for researchers seeking a self-contained reference on control theory. Unlike most books on the subject, Feedback Systems develops transfer functions through the exponential response of a system, and is accessible across a range of disciplines that utilize feedback in physical, biological, information, and economic systems.

Karl Åström and Richard Murray use techniques from physics, computer science, and operations research to introduce control-oriented modeling. They begin with state space tools for analysis and design, including stability of solutions, Lyapunov functions, reachability, state feedback observability, and estimators. The matrix exponential plays a central role in the analysis of linear control systems, allowing a concise development of many of the key concepts for this class of models. Åström and Murray then develop and explain tools in the frequency domain, including transfer functions, Nyquist analysis, PID control, frequency domain design, and robustness. They provide exercises at the end of every chapter, and an accompanying electronic solutions manual is available. Feedback Systems is a complete one-volume resource for students and researchers in mathematics, engineering, and the sciences.

  • Covers the mathematics needed to model, analyze, and design feedback systems
  • Serves as an introductory textbook for students and a self-contained resource for researchers
  • Includes exercises at the end of every chapter
  • Features an electronic solutions manual
  • Offers techniques applicable across a range of disciplines

Anarchy for thee, not for me. 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 17 people found this review helpful.

While many academics do tend to "fog" their arguments I think this book by Professor Siva Vaidhyanathan of New York University is a fresh, provocative, and extremely readable discourse on the nature of freedom and control in a world awash with technology that is often over-hyped and under-analyzed. Prof. Vaidhyanathan is a fresh voice analyzing the extremely important issue of, in his words, the "availability and accessibility of the substance of expression and thus the possibility of public discussion and creativity" (185). As a veteran of the culture wars spawned by punk rock's initial social (and later in a watered-down form) commercial success, I have seen the reliance on empty sloganeering and naive calls for anarchy from punks who couldn't organize taking out the trash if they had all week. Prof. Vaidhyanathan rejects simplistic calls for decentralization and anarchy, and instead provides a rich and nuanced historical context for why we should return to what he calls "Civic Republicanism," a return to the idea of public trust and mutual dependency that many Americans have lost sight of in the rather simplistic way most debates have been framed in the battle over public control of information. One of the virtues of Prof. Vaidhyanathan's book is that he does not provide any easy answer or EFF manifestos, just a reliance on the basic responsibility of human beings to engage in meaningful dialogue about the Faustian bargains involved in new technologies. And in an age that promises unparalleled control and unparalleled, resistance, a call for a meaningful and participatory dialogue is a breath of fresh air.

Editorial Review:

The Anarchist in the Library is the first guide to one of the most important cultural and economic battlegrounds of our increasingly plugged-in world. Siva Vaidhyanathan draws the struggle for information that will determine much of the culture and politics of the twenty-first century: anarchy or oligarchy, total freedom vs. complete control. His acclaimed book explores topics from unauthorized fan edits of Star Wars to terrorist organizations’ reliance on “leaderless resistance,” from Napster to Total Information Awareness to flash mobs.

Editorial Review:

Finite element methods for approximating partial differential equations that arise in science and engineering analysis find widespread application. Numerical analysis tools make the solutions of coupled physics, mechanics, chemistry, and even biology accessible to the novice modeler. Nevertheless, modelers must be aware of the limitations and difficulties in developing numerical models that faithfully represent the system they are modeling. This textbook introduces the intellectual framework for modeling with Comsol Multiphysics, a package which has unique features in representing multiply linked domains with complex geometry, highly coupled and nonlinear equation systems, and arbitrarily complicated boundary, auxiliary, and initial conditions. But with this modeling power comes great opportunities and great perils. Progressively, in the first part of the book, the novice modeler develops an understanding of how to build up complicated models piecemeal and test them modularly. The second part of the book introduces advanced analysis techniques. The final part of the book deals with case studies in a broad range of application areas including nonlinear pattern formation, thin film dynamics and heterogeneous catalysis, composite and effective media for heat, mass, conductivity, and dispersion, population balances, tomography, multiphase flow, electrokinetic, microfluidic networks, plasma dynamics, and corrosion chemistry. As a revision of Process Modeling and Simulation with Finite Element Methods, this book uses the very latest features of Comsol Multiphysics. There are new case studies on multiphase flow with phase change, plasma dynamics, electromagnetohydrodynamics, microfluidic mixing, and corrosion. In addition, major improvements to the level set method for multiphase flow to ensure phase conservation is introduced.

Editorial Review:

Many embedded engineers and programmers who need to implement basic process or motion control as part of a product design do not have formal training or experience in control system theory. Although some projects require advanced and very sophisticated control systems expertise, the majority of embedded control problems can be solved without resorting to heavy math and complicated control theory. However, existing texts on the subject are highly mathematical and theoretical and do not offer practical examples for embedded designers. This book is different;it presents mathematical background with sufficient rigor for an engineering text, but it concentrates on providing practical application examples that can be used to design working systems, without needing to fully understand the math and high-level theory operating behind the scenes. The author, an engineer with many years of experience in the application of control system theory to embedded designs, offers a concise presentation of the basics of control theory as it pertains to an embedded environment.

* Practical, down-to-earth guide teaches engineers to apply practical control theorems without needing to employ rigorous math
* Covers the latest concepts in control systems with embedded digital controllers
* The accompanying CD-ROM contains source code and real-world application examples to help users create fully working systems
