Editorial Review:

For introductory-level Microprocessor courses in the departments of Electronic Engineering Technology, Computer Science, or Electrical Engineering. The INTEL Microprocessors: 8086/8088, 80186/80188, 80286, 80386, 80486, Pentium, Pentium Pro Processor, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium 4, and Core2 with 64-bit Extensions, 8e provides a comprehensive view of programming and interfacing of the Intel family of Microprocessors from the 8088 through the latest Pentium 4 and Core2 microprocessors. The text is written for students who need to learn about the programming and interfacing of Intel microprocessors, which have gained wide and at times exclusive application in many areas of electronics, communications, and control systems, particularly in desktop computer systems. A major new feature of this eighth edition is an explanation of how to interface C/C++ using Visual C++ Express (a free download from Microsoft) with assembly language for both the older DOS and the Windows environments. Many applications include Visual C++ as a basis for learning assembly language using the inline assembler.Updated sections that detail new events in the fields of microprocessors and microprocessor interfacing have been added. Organized in an orderly and manageable format, this text offers more than 200 programming examples using the Microsoft Macro Assembler program and provides a thorough description of each of the Intel family members, memory systems, and various I/O systems.

Editorial Review:

Readers will be able to build and program their own 8088 single-board computer by applying the interfacing concepts and techniques presented in this book. Coverage begins with the software architecture of the 80x86 family, including the software model, instruction set and flags, and addressing modes. Abundant examples illustrate basic programming concepts such as the use of data structures, numeric conversion, string handling, and arithmetic. Hardware details of the entire 80x86 family are then examined, from pin and signal descriptions to memory and input/output system design. Advanced topics, including protected mode, WIN32 and Linux programming, and MMX technology are also introduced.

Editorial Review:

For a one-semester introductory course in microprocessors, this text covers the basic principles of microprocessors, microprocessor systems, and interfacing. As an example, the widely used Intel 8085A microprocessor is described in detail. The 8085A provides a case study which any sophomore-level engineering technology or computer science student can understand with little difficulty--as opposed to the newer 16- or 32-bit microprocessors--and which allows for coverage of all the important introductory concepts. The book is divided into 15 Chapters. Chapter 1 is an introduction to microprocessors, including an outline of their historical development and descriptions of several applications. The basic architecture of microprocessors and microprocessor systems is covered in Chapters 2 and 3. Chapters 4 and 5 present programming and some basic features of the instructions. The 8085A instruction set is covered in detail in Chapters 6 through 10, with examples illustrating its use. Chapters 11 through 14 address input/output and interfacing, with numerous examples. Finally, Chapter 15 is a brief description of some other important microprocessors.

The Intel Microprocessors 8086/8088, 80186/80188, 80286, 80386, 80486, Pentium, and Pentium Pro Processor Architecture, Programming, and Inter- facing

Very detail oriented, complete and good reference 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I have read the first 140 pages of this book, and I really like it. So far, I have the following comments.
Good points:
1.) It covers both real and protected mode from the start. Other books wait until the middle of the books before they cover protected mode.
2.) Assembly language command mechanism are explained in great detail. The author explain exactly what's going on. How the data moved from memory to register, register to register, how the memory in a computer is organized, how exactly PUSH and POP command works etc. There are lots of diagram that illustrate his explanations.
3.) It covers from 8086 to Pentium II hardware architecture. Many books are strictly limited to outdated 8086 and 8088 processors.
4.) The exercises at the end of each chapter increases my understanding of the subject and answers to even numbered problems are available at the end of the book.

Bad Points:
1.)Assembly language and processor architecture are hard subjects. You have to read each chapter several times before you can get a good grasp of the topic.
2.)Some of the topic presented by the authors can not be easily understood until you read the subsequent chapters.

One suggestion for people who read the book: Make sure you know how to convert binary, hexadecimal and decimal number. You have to know these otherwise you can get lost. Some basic understanding of logic gates is also helpfull!

Editorial Review:

Presents the material on this important family of microprocessors in a format that is well organized and easily understood. DLC: Intel 80xxx series microprocessors.

Great Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The author is actually one of my professors at The State University of New York at StonyBrook Basically Every chapter has to be read at least three times to get a good understanding. This doesn't mean that this is a bad book, it just means that reading about embedded systems for the first time might confuse you. This is an excellent book! It is taught by an excellent professor! I would recommend taking a course in wihich you could design and build your own embedded systems in addition to this book. This book will give anyone who grasps it, a good foundation in embedded systems design.

Great Embedded Book 4 out of 5 stars.

We use this book in the embedded systems design classes at the University of Wisconsin. I found it easy to read and had great example codes. There are some typos, and it doesn't cover everything, but it is a great beginner and reference book for the powerful 188EB chip.

Simple and easy to understand!! 4 out of 5 stars.

This book describes the microprocessor in a language which is so very simple and easy to understand. We have this book as a text book for the course in Microprocessors at the New York Institute of Technology. This was my primary reason to buy the book but once i began reading through it I found out that the language and the examples the author has used to describe the architecture and the working of the 188EB, is very uncomplicated and simple and reading the book is so much fun. For graduate students like me this book will definetely prove to be useful in understanding the subject of embedded microprocessors.

Toxic!! 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 11 people found this review helpful.

WARNING - do not handle this book. absolutely the most boring, hard to follow textbook ever. It is more of a technical manual than anything else.

Collection of datasheets 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is boring and would not be a good choice for a textbook. It is basically a collection of datasheets for Intel-based PC hardware (e.g., processors, interrupt controllers, keyboard controllers, clock circuitry, bus interfaces, etc.) It also includes a very short section on MS-DOS-based assembly and Visual C++ 2003.

Even though it was published in 2005 as a 7th edition, the author didn't bother to put any info on the then current processors such as Pentium-M, which were released two years earlier. Instead, it has numerous pages of useless specifications for 80186/80188/80286 chips. It offers very little over the freely available Intel Software Developer manuals and is certainly not as complete or up-to-date.

Editorial Review:

KEY BENEFIT: Updated and current, this book provides a comprehensive view of programming and interfacing of the Intel family of microprocessors from the 8088 through the latest Pentium 4 microprocessor.
