Editorial Review:

Radia Perlman's Interconnections is recognized as a leading text on networking theory and practice. It provides authoritative and comprehensive information on general networking concepts, routing algorithms and protocols, addressing, and the mechanics of bridges, routers, switches, and hubs. This Second Edition is expanded and updated to cover the newest developments in the field, including advances in switching and bridge technology, VLANs, Fast Ethernet, DHCP, ATM, and IPv6. Additional new topics include IPX, AppleTalk, and DECnet. You will gain a deeper understanding of the range of solutions possible and find valuable information on protocols for which documentation is not readily available elsewhere. Written by the inventor of many of the algorithms that make switching and routing robust and efficient, Interconnections, Second Edition offers an expert's insight into how and why networks operate as they do. Perlman describes all of the major networking algorithms and protocols in use today in clear and concise terms, while exploring the engineering trade-offs that the different approaches represent. The book contains extensive coverage of such topics as: *The spanning tree algorithm *The differences between bridges, routers, and switches *Virtual LANs (VLANs) and Fast Ethernet *Addressing and packet formats for IP, IPv6, IPX, CLNP, AppleTalk, and DECnet *Autoconfiguration of addresses; strategies in various protocol suites *Routing protocols, including RIP, IS-IS, OSPF, PNNI, NLSP, and BGP *Layer 3 multicast protocols, including IGMP, DVMRP, MOSPF, CBT, PIM, BGMP, Simple Multicast, and Express *Sabotage-proof routing *Protocol design folklore 0201634481B04062001

a classic case of lack of objectivity in review 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

If you read through the reviews, you would think that there is no other better book on the exposition of IDS systems than this one. The fact is that the quality of presentation of material is very poor, and the book reads like a collection of newsgroup replies and a few cut and paste web articles. So why this discussion ? It happens that Stephen Northcutt is an author and evaluator at GIAC and SANS, private organizations trying to hype up their brand name "certifications". It helps to be in the good looks of SANS when it comes to the "certification" and "advertising" arena. The bottom line: read between the lines (there is one proper review in the list before this one) and hope for a more objective approach when it comes to book reviews. Until then, if you do not trust this review, you have to risk it and buy it ! Flamers, you are welcome to go ahead and get into the good books of Northcutt.

Editorial Review:

The Chief Information Warfare Officer for the entire United States teaches you how to protect your corporate network. This book is a training aid and reference for intrusion detection analysts. While the authors refer to research and theory, they focus their attention on providing practical information. The authors are literally the most recognized names in this specialized field, with unparalleled experience in defending our country's government and military computer networks. New to this edition is coverage of packet dissection, IP datagram fields, forensics, and snort filters.

A great how-to networking guide 4 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

This is very much a how-to book. There is little on network principles. The other side of that is it misses little in how to install, bring to life, and manage a home network. If you have Linksys hardware, you'll find the content directly addresses your needs; yet, despite its name, the book is not that Linksys specific.

Glenn covers four topics especially well: network security, resource sharing, tips and troubleshooting, and advanced network tools. The latter, in an appendix, presents Windows graphical and command-line network tools. It makes Windows XP network diagnostic tools available to just about anyone, even those with no technical exposure to networking.

If you just want the practical details on how to set up a wired or wireless network, you would probably give Linksys Networks five stars. I wanted more on principles.

Editorial Review:

Build a wired or wireless Linksys network in your home or office easily with help from this one-stop guide. Inside, youll find details on selecting the right hardware and components for your needs, installing your network, connecting to the Internet, implementing security measures, and troubleshooting. Then youll learn how easy it is to share resources between computers including high-speed Internet access, data, music, games, and much more.

Comprehensive reference (3rd Edition) 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

If you're doing anything with Java and Network I/O programming, the topic will most likely be covered in this book. The author does a great job describing not only how Java handles network programming, but the concepts and details of network programming in general. The book takes the core java.net classes and describes each method, what it does, how to use it, what to watch for, code examples, etc - it takes the API Javadoc and expands upon it.

It's a great Java Network API reference book.

Editorial Review:

The new third edition of this highly regarded introduction to Java networking programming has been thoroughly revised to cover all of the 100+ significant updates to Java Developers Kit (JDK) 1.5. It is a clear, complete introduction to developing network programs (both applets and applications) using Java, covering everything from networking fundamentals to remote method invocation (RMI). Java Network Programming, 3rd Edition includes chapters on TCP and UDP sockets, multicasting protocol and content handlers, servlets, multithreaded network programming, I/O, HTML parsing and display, the Java Mail API, and the Java Secure Sockets Extension. There's also significant information on the New I/O API that was developed in large part because of the needs of network programmers. This invaluable book is a complete, single source guide to writing sophisticated network applications. Packed with useful examples, it is the essential resource for any serious Java developer.

A Security Book for the Rest of Us 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I bought this Network Security for Dummies after spending two frustrating hours in a large bookstore looking at one security text after another and finding that they were all written for people who already know a lot about networks. I suppose the assumption is that you won't get into network security until you have experience running a network, but the small company where I work only just set up a network and we need security right away. We can't afford to pay someone to run the network or be in charge of security. To my relief, the author of Network Security for Dummies understands this. It is obvious that she is just as knowledgeable about protecting networks as the authors of the other books I looked at (I was pretty amazed at what I found when I searched the web for the NRO, which the cover says is where she used to work). But she has taken the time to explain things to those of us who don't live and breathe computers. And she does so without talking down to you. At work we have already used some of the techniques she suggests and I feel confident we can make our network a lot more secure than it was, without spending a lot of money, but with the added advantage of really understanding what we are doing.

Editorial Review:

* This hands-on, do-it-yourself guide to securing and auditing a network offers immediate solutions to critical security problems for small- to medium-sized businesses
* Each part of the book begins with basics that can be quickly implemented and then moves on to more complex security mechanisms a company may consider as it grows
* Presents numerous checklists and exercises for performing network security audits
* Includes real-world examples and practical tips for implementing cost-effective security measures
* Companion Web site includes forms and checklists along with links to useful sites and downloads for recommended security tools
