A bit outdated now.. 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Hardly a mention of iSCSI and mostly deals with 1 & 2MBit Fiber Channel, which displays some of it's age. Though, it does a reasonable job of explaining LUN's, naming conventions and the security models in reasonably simplistic terminology. I personally wanted to know more specifically about iSCSI and other newer technologies.

Editorial Review:

If you've ever wondered how Linux carries out the complicated tasks assigned to it by the IP protocols -- or if you just want to learn about modern networking through real-life examples -- "Understanding Linux Network Internals" is for you.

Like the popular O'Reilly book, "Understanding the Linux Kernel," this book clearly explains the underlying concepts and teaches you how to follow the actual C code that implements it. Although some background in the TCP/IP protocols is helpful, you can learn a great deal from this text about the protocols themselves and their uses. And if you already have a base knowledge of C, you can use the book's code walkthroughs to figure out exactly what this sophisticated part of the Linux kernel is doing.

Part of the difficulty in understanding networks -- and implementing them -- is that the tasks are broken up and performed at many different times by different pieces of code. One of the strengths of this book is to integrate the pieces and reveal the relationships between far-flung functions and data structures. "Understanding Linux Network Internals" is both a big-picture discussion and a no-nonsense guide to the details of Linux networking. Topics include:

Key problems with networking

Network interface card (NIC) device drivers

System initialization

Layer 2 (link-layer) tasks and implementation

Layer 3 (IPv4) tasks and implementation

Neighbor infrastructure and protocols (ARP)

Bridging

Routing

ICMP

Author Christian Benvenuti, an operating system designer specializing in networking, explains much more than how Linux code works. He shows the purposes of major networking features and the trade-offs involved inchoosing one solution over another. A large number of flowcharts and other diagrams enhance the book's understandability.

Grueling Course 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This book is officially approved courseware for the CompTIA Network+ exam. It has been approved also by the CSSIA (Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance). The book is very comprehensive. But as all textbooks go it has both strengths and weaknesses. In this review I will try to highlight some of both.

Like most computer industry books, this one comes with a supplemental CD. That CD includes the Certblaster and MeasureUP self-test software and other files the student will find useful.

Each chapter begins with a highlight box that will outline what will be covered in the chapters. Then it includes a letter or story from someone working in the industry. At first these seemed a little cheesy, but as I moved further and further into the book I realized that they were a great source for a feel for the material in the real world, and not just in the classroom or self-study. On the side of the pages are some green bars; these bars highlight specific information you are required to know for the CompTIA exam, and which exam objective they are part of.

One of the greatest strengths is that each chapter ends with a mini glossary of key terms or new terms from that chapter. There is also a complete glossary of all of these terms at the back of the book. Then at each chapter's end there is a series of review questions - multiple choice questions much like those found in self-test software and on the actual exam. Finally, each chapter has a series of hands-on projects. Each project gets progressively more difficult.

The greatest strength of this book is that it has all-encompassing hardware, software, different OS's. The weakness is that it is a lot of material packed very densely into nearly a thousand pages. When I did the school program, we did this book in 3 weeks. For most it was a little overwhelming.

If you want to write the CompTIA Network+ exam, this is a great book to help get you there. Pay special attention to the Novell Netware sections. There were a lot of questions on the exam about those. And Good Luck!

Editorial Review:

Network+ Guide to Networks, Fourth Edition is designed to prepare users for CompTIA's newly-revised 2005 Network+ certification exam and will also offer mapping features to the exam objectives.

Not geared for the CCNA exam 2 out of 5 stars.

This book is good as a primer if you want consider achieving a CCNA. This book is not good as a study guide for the exam, due to its lack of granularity on most CCNA subjects.

Editorial Review:

* Helps students prepare for the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) exam, one of the most popular entry-level certifications for networking professionals and one that often translates into a salary increase
* According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, general networking/system administration jobs are expected to increase more than eighty percent by 2010
* This revision includes updates for the exam's new routing simulation, plus updated and more extensive information about WANs
* In addition to the Dummies Test Engine, an exclusive, fully customizable test-prep software package containing hundreds of sample questions based on the tone and content of the actual exam, the accompanying CD-ROM contains the Boson Routing Simulator to prepare students for this newest feature of the exam

Exam Cram2 N10-003 Network+ 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I kust took the Network+ exam on 5-19-2008 and passed with a 607 out of 900 and you need a 554. The exam cram2 book for the N10-003 is not adequate enough to use as your only study material. They should update it completely to reflect what you will see on the test. Yes the book is easy to read and the practice questions are a bonus. Go to [...] to really get some extra practice on concepts just glazed over by these jokers. I do not recommend this book for a complete novice in the IT field, otherwise you can study the material and take educated guesses on the exam for material that this book does not even cover.
