Editorial Review:

As we all know by now, wireless networks offer many advantages over fixed (or wired) networks. Foremost on that list is mobility, since going wireless frees you from the tether of an Ethernet cable at a desk. But that's just the tip of the cable-free iceberg. Wireless networks are also more flexible, faster and easier for you to use, and more affordable to deploy and maintain.

The de facto standard for wireless networking is the 802.11 protocol, which includes Wi-Fi (the wireless standard known as 802.11b) and its faster cousin, 802.11g. With easy-to-install 802.11 network hardware available everywhere you turn, the choice seems simple, and many people dive into wireless computing with less thought and planning than they'd give to a wired network. But it's wise to be familiar with both the capabilities and risks associated with the 802.11 protocols. And "802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide," 2nd Edition is the perfect place to start.

This updated edition covers everything you'll ever need to know about wireless technology. Designed with the system administrator or serious home user in mind, it's a no-nonsense guide for setting up 802.11 on Windows and Linux. Among the wide range of topics covered are discussions on:

deployment considerations

network monitoring and performance tuning

wireless security issues

how to use and select access points

network monitoring essentials

wireless card configuration

security issues unique to wireless networks

With wireless technology, the advantages to its users are indeed plentiful. Companies no longer have to deal with the hassle and expense of wiring buildings, and households with several computers canavoid fights over who's online. And now, with "802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide," 2nd Edition, you can integrate wireless technology into your current infrastructure with the utmost confidence.

The Best GPO Book, Now In 4th Edition 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is the 4th edition of this book and I buy every new edition that comes out. This particular edition includes major new updates for Vista, such as ADMX templates. I teach courses on Windows security at SANS and I recommend the latest version of Jeremy's GPO book at every conference to my attendees. This is one of the few must-have books for Windows network administrators.

havent read the book but I want to comment on the quality of the book 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 21 people found this review helpful.

I just received this book and haven't read it yet. But I wanted to comment on the poor quality of the book itself. The paper used is very poor quality, feels like newspaper almost. Has a very recycled feel to it, and the edge is not crisp, it has a rough edge that sprays little paper dust particles everywhere whenever the book is handled. I tried to fan the pages to remove these particles but they just keep coming. I am considering returning this book and maybe buying it again later if they improve the printing process used on it.

The first 40 pages in 768 pages. 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

An awful lot of computer books seem to leave out the first forty pages that should give you an introduction of just what it is that we are trying to do with this piece of hardware or software. This whole book, all 768 pages of it can be considered the first forty pages of any Cisco or Networking book that you might otherwise want to read.

This book talks about the internet, not about how to surf to a web page, but about the underlying structure - the backbone, the protocols, the way a message gets from here to there and back. The orientation is, as you might guess from the title, towards Cisco equipment. But I doubt that there are very many ISPs that don't have at least one Cisco box.

The book covers the Cisco philosophy on routers, switches, quality of service, security, wireless, content delivery, protocols, network management, network design, and finally even how to troubleshoot Cisco networks.

This is not a manual or certification cram guide for say the Cisco 12000 series router. This is the first forty pages of the manual on those products. And after reading the first forty pages, you might know if you need a Series 12000, or a Series 800. You'll at least be able to understand the manuals on these pieces of equipment.

Excellent book. I'd like to see the same thing on PC's, mainframes, clustering, and on and on.

Editorial Review:

Get a running start on your Cisco future. If you're new to networking in general or Cisco hardware in particular, you need a plain-speaking introduction to Cisco- driven internetworking to make sense of its powerful connectivity solutions and your opportunities as a Cisco professional. Before you purchase a single study guide, let Cisco: A BeginnerAEs Guide, by Tom Shaughnessy, give you a concise, fundamental understanding of all things "Cisco". You'll quickly get comfortable with: *The basics of Cisco technology u hardware, internetworking fundamentals, and protocols *Cisco internetworking tools u basic hardware configuration for the most popular Cisco devices, routers, switches, and hubs *Designing Cisco networks; how to specify and configure a network using Cisco hardware and software *Examples of network layouts - ready-to-apply designs for small, medium, and large organizations *Much more

Writing useless books for dummies 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is the real specialty the authors of this book have mastered...
I am astonished at how many positive reviews this horrible, stinky title has received ... how many friends do this guys have? In fact this has got to be one of the worst tech book I have ever read, a total waste of money and paper.
My advice is , avoid this book, and any other book form the same authors, like plague! You will learn NOTHING from them.
The authors go on and on babbling about how unsecure wireless networks are, and are nonetheless unable to clearly indicate you any technique to take advantage or to protect form this weakness. All you get (apart from the boring and repetitive author's ruminations) are a few screenshots of NetStumbler (hey man, I can see by myself what it looks like, teach me how to use it instead ..), one screenshot of Kismet running on a linux xterm and a list of some of its command options (come on do you think that a beginner would ever be able to figure out how to use a open source tool like Kismet all by himself?)
Ah we also get a little advertisement for a couple of non-free tools like AiroPeek ... like a beginner should spend money on that? And , wait, there is no tutorial or intro on those tools as well. Just the usual couple of screenshots to make the book look good if you flip through it at the bookstore.
Seriously, I know this is hard to believe, but this pathetic excuse for a book is just a series of boring trivialities
For example ... did you ever think about the fact that installing a non-authorized, non-encrypted access point in your office network might actually be a security risk? I am sure you didn't, but thanks to this beautiful book you know, as the author spends pages and pages rambling and babbling about this absurd topic!
Years ago the "For Dummies" series used to be the right choice if you needed a humorous, tutorial-like but solid intro to a 'foreign' technology, but now the title is not a joke anymore.
"Hacking Wireless Networks for Dummies".. true to its title!

Editorial Review:

Become a cyber-hero - know the common wireless weaknesses

"Reading a book like this one is a worthy endeavor toward becoming an experienced wireless security professional."
--Devin Akin - CTO, The Certified Wireless Network Professional (CWNP) Program

Wireless networks are so convenient - not only for you, but also for those nefarious types who'd like to invade them. The only way to know if your system can be penetrated is to simulate an attack. This book shows you how, along with how to strengthen any weak spots you find in your network's armor.

Discover how to:

  • Perform ethical hacks without compromising a system
  • Combat denial of service and WEP attacks
  • Understand how invaders think
  • Recognize the effects of different hacks
  • Protect against war drivers and rogue devices

Book that will satisfy no one 1 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I was looking for a book that explained the nuts and bolts of TCP/IP. Instead the book dedicates six chapters or so to TCP/IP. The rest of it is a superficial treatment that a new computer user might find useful, but that contains little material for the intermediate user (and only intermediate users, not beginners, would even know what TCP/IP is, much less want to read a book titled "TCP/IP for Dummies.")

For example, page 197 lists plug-ins for Web browsers, such as Shockwave, Flash, and RealOne Player. Useful for a rank beginner, but not for an intermediate user wanting to learn about TCP/IP. Page 188 explains how to "understand URLs," giving the example of http://www.ibm.com. Again, not very useful for the intermediate user.

Meanwhile, there are some TCP/IP basics that are never explained. Ports are not explained very well, and ICMP receives barely a mention. (However, page 64 tells me to "see RFCs 1256 and 2463 for more information on ICMP. This is not at all helpful.)

Some of the information is dated or, worse, just plain wrong. One passage suggests that gigabit Ethernet hardware costs a fortune, which is no longer true. Page 298 states that NetBIOS is a "Windows proprietary protocol." It is not; IBM originally developed NetBIOS.

Overall, the first few chapters of this book are much too technical for new Internet users, but barely meaty enough for someone who wants to understand TCP/IP in depth. All the remaining chapters are fine for new Internet users, but mere filler for anyone experienced enough to understand what a URL is. This confused mishmash of a book will satisfy no one.

Editorial Review:

Computers on the Internet communicate using a common language called TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). In this text developments in TCP/IP are covered: Intranets; HTTP; enhanced security; voice integration and collaborative workgroup applications.
