well presented explanations 4 out of 5 stars.

[A review of the 8th EDITION, that was published in late 2006.]

Stallings takes the student reader through an extensive introduction to current computer networking. Focusing naturally on TCP/IP, as the Internet is the largest computer network in the world. He shows how TCP/IP can be related to the theoretical 7 layer OSI model. The 5 layers of TCP/IP have proved to be well adequate to this date.

En route, he provides very simple analogies to the protocol stack, as this sometimes gives students grief. One analogy is for the physical layer to be mapped to a telephone line. Then on one side, there is a stack for ordering pizza - consisting of a guest at a hotel, a host and a telephone. The other stack has the pizza cook, the order clerk and a telephone. Here, we see a 3 [or 4] layer stack, that is readily understandable. (It's easier to see the structure in the book's diagram.] Well, if you can follow this, then TCP/IP is not so different.

The book also explains various multiplexing methods, like frequency division or time division, without drowning the student in maths. The treatment is qualitative, and does not replace a full course in communications theory.

The discussion on routing, however, while also qualitative, is closer to actual implementations. The routing strategies can be quite adequately understood at the level given in the text.

There is one chapter devoted to wireless networks [ie. for cellphones]. Given the still strong rise in cellphone usage in developing countries, this chapter might well be expanded in future editions of the book.

WiFi is covered, but not WiMax. Well, it is still early days for deployment of the latter, whereas WiFi's popularity is established.

Editorial Review:

This timely revision of an all-time best-seller in the field features the clarity and scope of a Stallings classic. This comprehensive volume provides the most up-to-date coverage of the essential topics in data communications, networking, Internet technology and protocols, and standards – all in a convenient modular format. Features updated coverage of multimedia, Gigabit and 10 Gbps Ethernet, WiFi/IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs, security, and much more. Ideal for professional reference or self-study. For Product Development personnel, Programmers, Systems Engineers, Network Designers and others involved in the design of data communications and networking products.

A Good Place to Start 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Note that the sub-title of this book says that it is a Beginner's Guide. It is designed for people who understand computers and have some experience in using operating systems such as Windows, Mac, or Linux. It starts with this base and talks about how to interface these systems into networks.

One thing that I like about this book is that it starts with an overview of what networking is, how the company will benefit, what the goals of establishing a network might be. From there it goes into the types of networks, i.e. peer to peer, client/server. I often find that this overview, what should be the first 40 pages or so of the book, is missing. Here Mr. Hallberg does an excellent job of providing the basic understanding of 'this is what I'm trying to do.'

After 38 pages (not quite a full forty pages, but close) he begins to get down to the nuts and bolts like cabling, repeaters, hubs, switches, and firewalls. From there he goes on about like you would expect to more advanced topics until the basics of networking are pretty well covered.

One particular strong point is the chapter on Network Disaster Recovery. You're going to have a disaster, it's just a matter of time. Having a place to at least start looking for how to recover is very good and not common in beginning level books.

One point I would like to see more of in a beginning book is security. Windows XP has some security features built in. A discussion of using their firewall vs. a hardware firewall would be good. And some discussion of keeping the salesmen out of the accounting package would be nice. Perhaps in the next edition.

Conclusion: A Very Good Place to Start.

Editorial Review:

Here is an unparalleled introduction to networking, offering easy-to-follow details on design and configuration, hardware, networking protocols, remote access, and security. This updated guide contains expanded coverage of wireless networking, the latest Windows and Linux releases, and security measures. New networking professionals will first learn what they need to know about network technology, and then how to apply that knowledge to set up, manage, and secure networks.

Editorial Review:

This book demonstrates service-oriented architecture (SOA) as a concrete discipline rather than a hopeful collection of cloud charts. Built upon the author's firsthand experience rolling out a SOA at a major corporation, SOA in Practice explains how SOA can simplify the creation and maintenance of large-scale applications. Whether your project involves a large set of Web Services-based components, or connects legacy applications to modern business processes, this book clarifies how -- and whether -- SOA fits your needs. SOA has been a vision for years. This book brings it down to earth by describing the real-world problems of implementing and running a SOA in practice. After defining SOA's many facets, examining typical use patterns, and exploring how loose coupling helps build stronger applications, SOA in Practice presents a framework to help you determine when to take advantage of SOA. In this book you will: Focus squarely on real deployment and technology, not just standards maps Examine business problems to determine which ones fit a SOA approach before plastering a SOA solution on top of them Find clear paths for building solutions without getting trapped in the mire of changing web services details Gain the experience of a systems analyst intimately involved with SOA "The principles and experiences described in this book played an important role in making SOA at T-Mobile a success story, with more than 10 million service calls per day." --Dr. Steffen Roehn, Member of the Executive Committee T-Mobile International (CIO) "Nicolai Josuttis has produced something that is rare in the over-hyped world of SOA; a thoughtful work with deep insights based on hands-on experiences. This bookis a significant milestone in promoting practical disciplines for all SOA practitioners." --John Schmidt, Chairman, Integration Consortium "The book belongs in the hands of every CIO, IT Director and IT planning manager." --Dr. Richard Mark Soley, Chairman and CEO, Object Management Group; Executive Director, SOA Consortium

Editorial Review:

How secure is your network? The best way to find out is to attack it. Network Security Assessment provides you with the tricks and tools professional security consultants use to identify and assess risks in Internet-based networks-the same penetration testing model they use to secure government, military, and commercial networks. With this book, you can adopt, refine, and reuse this testing model to design and deploy networks that are hardened and immune from attack.

Network Security Assessment demonstrates how a determined attacker scours Internet-based networks in search of vulnerable components, from the network to the application level. This new edition is up-to-date on the latest hacking techniques, but rather than focus on individual issues, it looks at the bigger picture by grouping and analyzing threats at a high-level. By grouping threats in this way, you learn to create defensive strategies against entire attack categories, providing protection now and into the future.

Network Security Assessment helps you assess:
  • Web services, including Microsoft IIS, Apache, Tomcat, and subsystems such as OpenSSL, Microsoft FrontPage, and Outlook Web Access (OWA)

  • Web application technologies, including ASP, JSP, PHP, middleware, and backend databases such as MySQL, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server

  • Microsoft Windows networking components, including RPC, NetBIOS, and CIFS services

  • SMTP, POP3, and IMAP email services

  • IP services that provide secure inbound network access, including IPsec, Microsoft PPTP, and SSL VPNs

  • Unix RPC services on Linux, Solaris, IRIX, and other platforms

  • Various types of application-level vulnerabilities that hacker tools and scripts exploit

Assessment is the first step any organization should take to start managing information risks correctly. With techniques to identify and assess risks in line with CESG CHECK and NSA IAM government standards, Network Security Assessment gives you a precise method to do just that.

Excellent Beginning Level Book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a beginning level book on networks. If you're a CCNA or something like that it will be trivial to you, and a waste of time. If, on the other hand, you have a local CCNA and he seems to spend a lot of time trying to snow you then this will give you the knowledge you need to know when he is full of it. Likewise it will be good for the beginner who is, perhaps setting up a home network to give multiple computers access to the Internet.

This book is not hardware specific, so you will still have to make decisions as to what brands of equipment to buy and things like that, but you will have an understanding of the concepts and the functions of the equipment you will be needing.

Intended for beginners, the book is printed in full color and is extensively illustrated with drawings that are clear and drawn specifically for this book.

Editorial Review:

A stunning, four-color illustrated book takes readers through the inner-workings of network systems.

Completely updated with the latest coverage on Wireless LAN and Mobile wireless, Convergence, Network Storage, Category 5 cabling and Gigabit Ethernet and CRM.

Includes detailed explanations of how individual networking components work and fit together.

The most up-to-date and sophisticated four-color title on the market focusing on the intricacies of networks.
