Editorial Review:

With over 40 professionally designed templates, multiple page designs, dozens of fonts, and stunning tables and charts, Pages—Apple's new word processor—makes it easy to create polished documents with a minimum of fuss. Part word processor, part layout program, it lets you place alignment guides to help you position text and graphics precisely on the page while text flows around any kind of graphic, no matter where you put it. (Try doing that with Microsoft Word!) Students can use Pages to create school reports; parents can use it to send out birth announcements; anyone can use it to create an advertising mailer, church newsletter, party invitation, or just a plain old letter.

Here to help is this small, smart, streamlined guide designed to take readers from standing start to stellar finish, no matter what project they're tackling. Rather than cover every last option Pages offers, this book steps readers through several sample Pages projects, showing them the quickest, most effective way to communicate their ideas. Each short lesson builds a component of a basic Pages document, from choosing a template, deciding on a layout, formatting charts and tables, incorporating graphics and color, and adding a bit of polish to a final document. Friendly, step-by-step instructions and large, full-color screen shots make the information instantly accessible.

Editorial Review:

With tools for photography, moviemaking, DVD production, and music creation, Apple's iLife software can enhance just about any educational experience. The real power comes when all of these programs are used together, and in this fully updated book, longtime digital media guru Jim Heid, along with education expert Ted Lai, provide teachers with both the technical detail they need to work with the software (including an interactive tour of the iLife suite) and the lesson plans and projects they need to get students using the tools creatively and effectively. Teachers learn by doing as the book steps them through projects that teach iLife basics. They can then choose from among the 6 full lessons and 20 mini lessons (that can be taught in an afternoon or just over a day or two). The lessons include projects to share that knowledge with students, student tip sheets, and more. This book is beautifully illustrated with updated coverage that includes the latest products in iLife '08 (now available for US$79): iDVD, iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, and .Mac Web Gallery. These amazing applications bring out the creative spirit in everyone.

A Very Nice Approach 5 out of 5 stars.
76 of 79 people found this review helpful.

The In a Snap books do not presume that you are a Dummy or an Idiot. They presume that you are a smart person, not afraid of computers, but that you need to learn how to use something new, like a piece of software on your computer. Further they assume that you want to get started without having to pour through all the 1500 pages or so in the guru level book. This book takes the Office 2004 software package for the Mac computer and gives it the In a Snap approach.

In evaluating books on Office, I always look first to see if they discuss Pivot Tables in the section on Excel. A surprising number of books don't, or give them very short treatment. In this book the index sends you to page 263, that puts you right in the middle of a discussion on pivot tables. Flipping back a page or three gets you to a section called Find Relationships Between Data. What an excellent idea, that's what a pivot table really is, but doesn't have the problem of the dumb name Pivot Table. The discussion is as good as I've seen anywhere in explaining what you can use them for.

The next thing I found was inside the front cover where they have a "Contents at a Glance." This sends you to, not the page number - that's the function of the index, but to a section identified by its own numbering system. Really a handy way to get where you want to jump in to solve the problem you're having at the moment.

Editorial Review:

A unique random-access format makes all of these nuggets of information and advice easily and instantly accessible. Packed with more than 160 essential tasks, tips and techniques for the new Mac version of Microsoft Office 2004, this book will help you zero in on the task you're most interested in so that you can learn and get back to work.

Nice Beginner or Reference Unix / Linux Book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I wish this was the book we used last quarter since it is MUCH better. It is this quarter's UNIX / Linux textbook (Shell Scripting although it also covers the basic commands) This book is highly reccomended for the Linux beginner or for someone who wants a very good reference book.

A must have! 5 out of 5 stars.

I was recently thrown into the world of Unix at work. Like most people I was a windows programmer/user and didn't even know what Unix was. After reading the reviews, I picked this up and must say its the very best book on programing I've ever read. I have books on XML, XSLT, SQL SERVER, VB, C# and more, but none of this books taught be faster than Unix Shell Programming, Third Edition. This is a must have for the beginner!

Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Written specifically for the experienced UNIXTM user, this book is loaded with examples, applications and projects using Shells, UNIXTM command language programs that allow users to manipulate documents, build programs, communicate with other users, and increase productivity. It shows commands, control structures, interactive use of the Shell, and how to create Shell programs.

A serious work 4 out of 5 stars.

Recently I've seen some digital tutorial and books that make me thinking on a precipitated release. Sure this is not the case.

Just what I needed! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is just an amazing book. I'm still kind of in shock that it even exists. I've been a life long musician, but have never taken the plunge into digital audio. It just seemed like such a big, scary world. Well, it was until I found this book. I don't know how much it would benefit others, but to me, it was a total godsend. I now feel really familiar and comfortable with the entire WORLD of digital audio, not just one program. I now understand plugin formats, virtual instruments, and I also know all sorts of great secrets on where to get them for free, and which freebies are especially awesome. I would have paid triple the price for the knowledge in this book. Thanks to the author for this awesome and needful book.
Speaking of the author, he does a really fine job here. Yes, there are some things I feel were left out, but there's bound to be some stuff missing in a book that undertakes such a massive task, as this one does. Even though I'm not an expert, I feel so much more educated as to why I would want to use Logic vs. Reason vs. Ableton Live vs. Garageband (I've never been interested in Pro Tools, although it's also covered in the book).
Also, to any potential Windows users, this book can also be really beneficial for you as well. You won't have Garageband or Logic, but other than those two chapters (and a little bit of info about customizing the Mac for digital audio production), all this stuff applies to you as well. I'm a recent convert to the Mac platform, and I can use this info on either platform. I also plan on purchasing this book as a gift for some friends of mine on Windows.
This review is just too long, and I apologize. But I'm just so happy with it. Remember that it doesn't get deep. At all. In any regards. But it's just what I needed: a huge, sweeping overview of the entire digital audio world. Thanks again to the author for such a gem!

Author Ben Waldie introduces readers to how Automator works, and then helps them assemble and use Automator workflows. This book covers the major updates to Automator that are part of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), including a variety of highly anticipated features, such as recording, looping, and the use of variables within workflows. Both beginning users who want a thorough introduction to Automator and more advanced users looking for a convenient reference will find what they need here in straightforward language, clear steps, and practical tips.

This has a lot of great tips and I needed this book before I even took my iphone out of the box! It guides you step-by-step and I really love the visual reference ( a necessity for me!) Enjoy-you really can't go wrong with this handy guide.

Great Tips that help with iPod Touch as well. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is a wonderful, full color step by step introduction to the original iPhone. Note that this book doesn't cover the new 3G version of the iPhone. Although I don't have an iPhone yet, I was interested in an iPod Touch since it has everything but phone functions and it was very helpful for navigating through the menus and explaining what the settings cover. The full color pictures are excellent screen shots of the various features. It also walks you through basic set ups for personalization, and explains how to use the main features. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in an iPhone or an iPod Touch and not sure if you will like it. When the 3G version of this books comes out, grab the update. Great info for a reasonable price.

Editorial Review:

There are basically two types of iPhone books out there: (1) The “Tell-me-all-about-it” kind, which includes in-depth discussions on everything from wireless network protocols to advanced compression codes. (2) Then there’s this book, which instead is a “show-me-how-to-do-it” book, that skips all the confusing techno-jargon and just tells you, in plain simple English, exactly how to use the iPhone features you want to use most.

The iPhone Book is from Scott Kelby, the award-winning author of the smash bestseller, The iPod Book, who takes that same highly-acclaimed, casual, straight-to-the-point concept and layout and brings it to learning Apple’s amazing iPhone. Scott teams up once again with gadget guru, and leading iPhone authority, Terry White to put together a book that is an awful lot like the iPhone itself—simple to use and fun to learn. The book’s layout is brilliant, with each page covering just one single topic, so finding the information you need is quick and easy, with a large full-color photo on each page so you can see exactly how it works.

You’ll quickly learn how to use the most useful and most requested iPhone features so you can start having fun, and start really using your iPhone today—right now! If you’re ready to learn “just the funk and not the junk,” it’s all here—in the only book of its kind—and you’re going to love it.
