Conquers the Leopard 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've been a Mac person since 1992 - just bought a MacBookPro and wss chugging along fine...till a couple of applications disappear from the Dock. (If you don't know what a Dock is, you really need this book!)

How do I figure this out? I type half a dozen phrases into the help form...no luck. So I look up this book and there it was. I learn all sorts of other things too.

Well, sometimes the online manuals just don't go far enough or they're too cumbersome to use. Who wants to spend half an hour tracking down a single phrase? When that happens, this book nicely fills the gap.

Easy and fun to read with many clear diagrams and screen shots. A nice companion to your new Mac!

Editorial Review:

In this book—now in full color for the first time—Robin returns to one of her favorite things: teaching new computer users how to use and enjoy the Macintosh!

Sit down at your Mac and let Robin introduce you to its basic features. Follow Robin’s step-by-step directions, and you’ll soon feel comfortable, confident, and able to do just about anything you want to do on your Mac. From using the mouse to surfing the web, from menu commands to keyboard shortcuts, you’ll acquire exciting new computer skills—and you’ll have fun in the process.

Just what a new Mac User Needs! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I recently ordered my first Apple - a MacBook Pro and ordered the OS X Leopard book at the same time. This guide is just what the new Mac user needs. The format of one task to one page makes it a great flip open "quick-start" guide. The book isn't expensive, it's easy to read and navigate, and it's just fun. If you are brand new to the Mac, I can't recommend this book highly enough!

Editorial Review:

With so many books out there on Mac OS X Leopard, what makes this one better and different is its focus. While other Leopard books can regularly be 500-plus pages, this book cuts through all the technical jargon and gives you exactly what you want: the most important, most requested, and just plain coolest things about Leopard that will change the way you work on your Mac. With Leopard's newest features, this book will show you how to customize your workspace with Spaces, search and view your files fast with Quick Look, restore any file on your system with Time Machine, and much more. Each page covers just one topic, complete with full-color photos and screenshots, making it easy to find what you're looking for fast.

Tried another 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Programming/scripting is not natural for me! It is hard work. This is the third book on AS 3.0 I've tried. The other books did not work for me. I need a book that will tell me what to do in a very elementary manner. I can then put it in context. For example:

1. This is how you script interactivity in a button (code)
2. This is what it is doing
3. This is what the various segments of code mean
etc.

This is the way I learned HTML. I looked up the code to do a given item. Over time if morphed into a thorough understanding of what HTML is and how to do it. This book enables me to do something similar. It takes basic AS 3.0, shows you how to do it then gives the information so you can put it in context. I'm relieved and grateful to find a book that allows me to construct the learning in a way that best fits me. THANK YOU!

With Adobe's acquisition of Macromedia, millions of Photoshop users may be installing Flash for the first time and Flash CS3 Professional for Windows and Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide is there to show them what to do. From basic first steps, such as exploring the drawing tools, including Flash CS3's new Pen tool, to frame-by-frame animation, motion tweening, and shape tweening, this book serves as the beginner's guide to Flash. But it doesn’t stop there: sections on interactivity, sound, and video have been fully updated to demonstrate best practices in ActionScript 3.0, as well as the latest in Flash's video technology.

It worked for me . . . 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

It takes some time to go through the exercises but I'm up and going now editing my own films. A typical guy, I hate reading directions but sometimes it is necessary. What negative feelings I have about this product are due to the fact I hate the necessary learning curve in learning a "substantial" software product. If only the old iMovie HD product had added an extra video track and kept its wonderful characteristics. I would be happy as a clam. It seems to me that FCE is like Photoshop in that one can accomplish the same task in a number of different ways. Learning all these options takes time. No way around it. Also, like photoshop, one can get competent on FCE without using ALL it offers. Anyway, this manual does explain things well although laboriously. As I start editing my own movies I find the manual very helpful when I forget something. I can go back and reread the chapter I need and move on. I have accepted that only time and repetition will make me competent on FCE and that, at some point, I will love this software. But, at this point I need a how to manual to get started. This training product did what it promised and will be near my computer in the near future as I edit my movies and need to refresh my knowledge base.

Editorial Review:

Reference how to take over Max OS X Leopard 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

My first acquaintance started in far 2002 when I went to university. Then I used MacBook Pro of my friend with new Tiger OS on it. It was interesting, but I still didn't understand anything from Mac's and was very afraid to break something.

A couple months ago I decided that it's time for my first Mac and I have went for new MacBook Pro (as I already built my new computer in December 2007).

By the way (just as remark): if you buy MacBook Pro (or just any other Mac) from USA Apple website, it cost only 1999$, so in Euros' 1400. If you buy it in Europe it's 1799 Euros', so around 3-4 hundreds less. And even if you order Mac from Europe then still send it from America with UPS.

Well, anyway, my lovely MacBook Pro stands aside and I just didn't know from which side to come to it. But now (finally) Mac OS X Leopard is launched and I glad I have this book.

For all 11 years I found nothing then Bible's, so I always stick to it. It's always handy to have good reference on last version you work with and, personally, I like to stay updated. To this moment I already went through half of "Mac OS X Leopard Bible" and I stay positive about it. I'm going to study it all from cover to cover to find everything to the last peace. Even if I will not use it, I can at least compare it with Windows analogs.

If you're looking for a good Mac Leopard reference - this book is your best friend. It covers also new 64-bit universal OS.

I believe that best way to study the things you need - is to get it from a several number of writers and on this book worked whole crew of writers. From myself would like to say "Thank you".

In book you will meat proper amount of screenshots, so in some way you can call it Visual Bible (or Visual Reference, that also a plus). Bible has a lot of information for anybody, but it's also very technical. Personally, I don't believe there're too advanced book (but believe in opposite). And with this book there is much information to catch up with.

More detailed?

Part I: Getting to Know Mac OS X (that part is for beginners as me I guess)
- Chapter 1: Introduction and Installation of Mac OS X
- Chapter 2: Exploring the GUI and Personalizing your workspace
- Chapter 3: Searching your Spotlight
- Chapter 4: Transitioning to Intel Architecture and Universal/ Binary Apps (I guess this chapter will be useful for everybody; you know as they say: "There're only 10 types of people in the world: those who do understand binary and those who don't")
- Chapter 5: Working with Applications and Documents
- Chapter 6: Working with Included Applications
- Chapter 7: Working with QuickTime and Included Media Applications

Part II:
- Chapter 8: Getting Help
- Chapter 9: Utilizing Services
- Chapter 10: Getting on the internet
- Chapter 11: Setting Up a Local Network
- Chapter 12: Sharing Files and Network Services
- Chapter 13: Deploying More Network Services
- Chapter 14: Harnessing .Mac
- Chapter 15: Managing Fonts

Part III:
- Chapter 16: Printing and Faxing
- Chapter 17: Managing System Preferences
- Chapter 18: Managing User Accounts and Privileges
- Chapter 19: Integrating in a Windows World

Part IV:
- Chapter 20: Enhancing with Utilities
- Chapter 21: Maintaining Mac OS X
- Chapter 22: Automating and AppleScript
- Chapter 23: Commanding UNIX
- Chapter 24: Securing Mac OS X (of cause will not make you security guru, but at least for Mac there almost no viruses while for Windows they appear every hour)

I, of cause, can't stay without attention the one of the most painful question for many readers as paper quality. I will be honest - I'm a perfectionist. To tell you the truth - if 5 is the maximum, paper quality is 3,5. Cover - soft - as 95% of all existing computer books. BUT this or other Bible book - price/quality - buyer always wins. That is without any doubt, because the information - is what really matters, the information is what you pay for.

If you go for more - you can ask to put this book into hard cover, to make 5-star paper, but then price will increase minimum for 30% and in place for 23$ it will be 40$ - does it really worth it? As for me, I better get the information, as it is, then pay extra bucks for fancy extras.

The only improvement I would really consider: Troubleshooting. Just to make small chapter with the most recent users problems (maybe even make a small forum/ blog and then add it to Bible). Why I say it, cause recently I had a problem with writing DVD on Vista and then put it in MacBook Pro. And Mac just didn't see it. Usual eject don't help. So, just reboot and hold "eject" - really helps!

Editorial Review:

The beauty of Leopard is that there is so much more than meets the eye, including over 300 new enhancements and its ability to run on both Intel PCs and PowerPC Macs. This comprehensive reference is your best guide on how to tame this powerful new cat. You'll find the latest technologies, new wireless networking, cool Dashboard widgets, a reflective Dock, and more. Discover secret tips and workarounds that even Apple doesn't know about.

Editorial Review:

O'Reilly's bestselling book on Linux's bash shell is at it again. Now that Linux is an established player both as a server and on the desktop "Learning the bash Shell" has been updated and refreshed to account for all the latest changes. Indeed, this third edition serves as the most valuable guide yet to the bash shell.

As any good programmer knows, the first thing users of the Linux operating system come face to face with is the shell the UNIX term for a user interface to the system. In other words, it's what lets you communicate with the computer via the keyboard and display. Mastering the bash shell might sound fairly simple but it isn't. In truth, there are many complexities that need careful explanation, which is just what "Learning the bash Shell" provides.

If you are new to shell programming, the book provides an excellent introduction, covering everything from the most basic to the most advanced features. And if you've been writing shell scripts for years, it offers a great way to find out what the new shell offers. "Learning the bash Shell" is also full of practical examples of shell commands and programs that will make everyday use of Linux that much easier. With this book, programmers will learn:

How to install bash as your login shell

The basics of interactive shell use, including UNIX file and directory structures, standard I/O, and background jobs

Command line editing, history substitution, and key bindings

How to customize your shell environment without programming

The nuts and bolts of basic shell programming, flow control structures, command-line options and typed variables

Process handling, from job control to processes, coroutines andsubshells

Debugging techniques, such as trace and verbose modes

Techniques for implementing system-wide shell customization and features related to system security
