Editorial Review:

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Mac! Whether you’ve just decided to switch from Windows or you’ve been using a Mac for awhile and want to take advantage of all its bells and whistles, Macs All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies is the perfect guidebook to Mac land.

You probably already know that Macs were made for media. There’s iPhoto for organizing, editing, and sharing your digital photos; iMovie to let you become a moviemaker; iDVD for preserving that movie and playing your favorites; and of course, iTunes for managing your music. But your Mac is just as happy creating documents, browsing the Internet, putting together cool presentations, or even crunching numbers. This guide shows you how to use all those applications and more. Seven minibooks cover Mac basics; working with photos, movies, and music; using the Internet; working with iLife and iWork applications; various other Mac programs; time-saving tips; and networking. You’ll discover how to

  • Set up and customize a new Mac
  • Get online, choose a browser, configure an e-mail account, and instant-message with iChat
  • Handle Mac security and troubleshoot problems
  • Create a Web site with iWeb and get it online
  • Back up your files, sync your stuff, and manage your life with your Mac
  • Network your Mac with other computers, even PCs, and share files, printers, and more

Even if you’re a seasoned Mac veteran, we bet you’ll find some things here you didn’t know! And you’ll refer to this book again and again.

Definitely need this! 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Microsoft has outdone itself yet again. Both the 2007 Office for PC and the 2008 Office for Mac have unraveled much of what was good, clear, intuitive, and simple in the earlier versions and tangled it all up into arcane and hidden "toolboxes". For example, in Word, I had to look up ( ! ) how to change margins -- 'Page setup' just doesn't do it any more. Same for headers and footers -- the problem there was to look up how to get out of them. Unbelievable. And this is, thank God, for a Mac -- I can't even imagine dealing with Office 2007 AND Vista at the same time! God. I need an aspirin just thinking about it. So this manual is absolutely necessary if you want to write a document and actually have some control over formatting. I don't use Excel but I hear tell the new respective versions are also completely screwed up -- er, I mean, 'improved.' And, needless to say, don't even try to use the 'Help' menu -- completely useless. The manual is a must. Don't 'upgrade' without it.

Editorial Review:

Microsoft's Office 2008 is packed with new tools that will help users work smarter and more efficiently, such as the new Elements Gallery, Word's publication-layout tools, Excel's ledger sheets (templates for common financial tasks), Entourage's improved Exchange Server support, and My Day for tracking appointments and to-do items. In this latest, updated edition of the bestselling Visual QuickStart Guide for Microsoft Office, veteran author Steve Schwartz guides the user along with clear, concise instructions and loads of visual aids that make learning easy and painless.

Editorial Review:

Microsoft Office is the number-one selling software for the Mac; the Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Entourage applications are more dominant in the Mac world than they are among PC users. And Microsoft has greatly improved and enhanced Office 2004 to take advantage of the latest Mac OX features. In short, Microsoft Office for the Mac is wildly popular and better than ever. But as incredible and powerful it is, the Office 2004 suite comes without a single page of printed instructions. That means you're left to forge your own path through its countless innovative and useful new features and tools--until now. Office 2004 for Mac: The Missing Manual is the manual that should have been in the box. It's the map that clearly and easily guides both beginners and veterans through this new suite. Mark H. Walker, Franklin Tessler, and Paul Berkowitz deliver all the practical information you need to master the basics and make the most of all four Office 2004 programs--Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Entourage. It's four books in one! According to Microsoft's own research, the average Office user taps into less than fifteen percent of the suite's features. With first-rate writing, a handcrafted index, and the trademark humor and clarity of every Missing Manual, Office 2004 for Mac: The Missing Manual will change that. Because this isn't an authorized book, Walker, Tessler, and Berkowitz candidly point out which features are gems in the rough worthy of your focused attention--and which are junkware that you best continue to overlook. Whether you're an Office beginner eager to master one or all of the applications in the suite or a longtime Office user looking for detailed coverage of what's new (and what's removed) in Office 2004 and hoping to implement power-user techniques for better and more efficient work, this funny and friendly, comprehensive guide will prove indispensable.

Editorial Review:

Talk about making an impact: Apple's Shake compositing and visual effects software has been used in every Academy Award-winning film for visual effects since its debut. It's no wonder that trained Shake artists are in high demand, and there's nowhere better to begin getting that training than with this fully updated (for Shake 4) and comprehensive Apple-approved guide (which includes a free 30-day trial version of this multi-thousand dollar software) Using step-by-step, hands-on instruction, Hollywood effects wizard Marco Paolini takes you through Shake's interface and features, including its color correction tools, tracking and stabilization capabilities, integrated procedural paint, powerful new floating point technology, advanced keyframing, blue and green screen techniques, rotoscoping tools, and more. As with the other titles in the Apple Pro Training series each chapter in this guide represents a complete lesson, with a project to complete, a review section, and bonus exercises to help test what you've learned. The accompanying DVD includes the lesson files needed to complete the book's projects. You can work through the book from cover to cover to get an entire course or you can go straight to the lessons that interest you most. Either way, you'll find the coverage you need to confront even the most daunting compositing and effects tasks with Shake.

The real idiot book 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a real good idiot book. The visuals are what makes the book. A good reference book for the do it yourselfer computer person

It's basic level, but it is the ABSOLUTE BEST basic OSX Tiger book!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my 77 year-old mother that has never touched a computer in her life. Even with this book, it's a little bit of a struggle for her, but that is just because she is in completely new territory. I personally looked through every page of the book and highlighted the most important sections for her to learn, so I'm very familiar with it.

If you're making the switch to Mac from Windows, you may find it overly dummied down at times, but there will be some good stuff you'll learn. Anyone that has reluctance to master Tiger should buy this book ASAP.

Editorial Review:

Richly colored illustrations, and clear step-by-step instructions guide users new to Mac OS X Tiger through the basics of this powerful operating system. Also explores how to browse the Web with Safari, manage fonts with FontBook, use iCal to track appointments, and make the switch from older Mac OS versions. Get your Tiger to roar with this easy to use reference filled with more than 100 fun and helpful tasks, presented in full color with a newly re-designed interior to make learning fast and efficient.

Editorial Review:

Certain technologies bring out everyone's hidden geek, and iPhone did the moment it was released. Even though Apple created iPhone as a closed device, tens of thousands of developers bought them with the express purpose of designing and running third-party software. In this clear and concise book, veteran hacker Jonathan Zdziarski -- one of the original hackers of the iPhone -- explains the iPhone's native environment and how you can build software for this device using its Objective-C, C, and C++ development frameworks. iPhone Open Application Development walks you through the iPhone's native development environment, offers an overview of the Objective-C language you'll use with it, and supplies background for the iPhone operating system. You also get detailed recipes and working examples for everyone's favorite iPhone features -- graphics and audio programming, interfaces for adding multitouch functionality to games, the use of hardware sensors, and the device's vast user interface kit. This book explains: How to access the iPhone's underlying operating system The makeup of an iPhone application How to get the open source tool chain running on your desktop The iPhone's core user interface framework, which is heavily tied to major application-level functions Using the many touted iPhone features such as multitouch, hardware sensors, and gestures Intercepting and handling event notifications for many iPhone-related events Raw video surfaces and 3D transformations that take you deeper into advanced graphics on the iPhone How to record and play simple sounds and intercept sound events Advanced digital audio output using Apple's new Audio Toolbox framework Advanced user interfacecomponents such as section lists, keyboards, and image manipulation

The Appendix includes a compendium of miscellaneous code examples for cool application features, such as using the camera and creating a CoverFlow(R)-like album browser. This book is a true hacker's book, designed for the millions of users who have run third party applications on their iPhone, but its concepts and code examples have shown to be remarkably similar to Apple's official SDK, making this book a valuable resource for both camps. Any programmer can use this book to write applications with the same spectacular effects that made the device an immediate hit, and impress users just as much as the official iPhone software does. That programmer can easily be you.

DO NOT BUY! Printing Defects. Should be Recalled! 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I ordered this book in October 2008 and received a copy with multiple printing defects (smeared images, illegible illustrations, etc). I requested a replacement but it contained the same defects. Amazon customer service agreed to refund the price and return shipping, and removed the item from their site. Amazon told me they would investigate the defects and I would know the problem was resolved when the item again became available to order. When I saw the item was again available in late November, I ordered another one. Unfortunately, when the book arrived it had exactly the same printing defects. Amazon and Peachpit Press should be ashamed for allowing these to stay in inventory this long. These books should all be recalled!

Editorial Review:

This reference provides in-depth technical information on Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server's directory services architecture. System administrators and IT professionals will learn the details of how to deploy Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server within a multiplatform, heterogeneous environment, with an emphasis on integrating user accounts and authentication processes. This book is a perfect study aid for the Directory Services exam, and also serves as an in-depth technical reference for experienced system administrators and engineers. This reference follows the learning objectives of the Directory Services exam, which is one requirement toward the Apple Certified System Administrator (ACSA) certification, Apple's highest level of IT certification. Chapter tests reinforce the knowledge gained along the way.

Bilingual 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I'm becoming bilingual--I'm learning to speak Apple as well as Windows. I just got a new iMac G5. Apple basically tells you to learn the system by pushing all the buttons to see what they do. Yeah, right. I also have the XP Missing Manual. This is a good series, a lot better than the Dummie series, if you really are a dummie. The organization is good and there is a lot of information, starting with the basics and going from there.

Editorial Review:

With new material on practically every page, the latest update of David Pogue's best-selling title offers a wealth of detail on the all of the changes in Apple's Mac OS X 10.3, aka "Panther". Written with humor and technical insight characteristic of the Missing Manual series, the new edition covers everything from the all-new Finder to iChat AV--Apple's exciting tool for video conferencing. The book also deals with features under the hood, such as the Terminal and networking tools. Pogue, the renowned New York Times computer columnist, tackles his subject with scrupulous objectivity--revealing which new features work well and which do not. An authoritative book that will appeal to novices and experienced users alike.
