Teach Yourself Visually Windows XP 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I feel that I am somewhat computer illiterate, and this book was recommended to me. It is great - mainly because the visuals help point you in the right direction.

Great resource for new computer users 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for my dad, as he just got a computer, and he wanted a book to show him some basic computer functions. Though I have not used this book myself, he says the visual teaching is great for him. The big plus is that the book is taking much of the tech support and training burden off of me, so I whole heartedly recommend this title.

Exceptional recource for 2K8 5 out of 5 stars.

Just as Mr. Mulcare wrote the definitive resource for AD on Win2K3,
Active Directory for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Technical Reference (Pro-Technical References) he has done it again with this resource kit. His knowledge of the product and ability to pass along critical information on Active Directory is exceptional. Keep up the good work and I look forward to whatever you write for Win7!

Full of promise, but unable to deliver 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book, a svelte 296 pages, plus CD-ROM, should be viewed in the same vein as the O'Reilly "... In A Nutshell" series: It's full of good information, but it doesn't quite take the one extra step to answer the question that's at the back of your mind: "But how do I use it to do XYZ?".

Case in point: it will tell you how to get information back from the system, but not necessarily how to pull out the one specific piece of data you're after, so that it can be processed in a script. (A couple of minutes of trial-and-error resolved that quandary.) Disclaimer: I skimmed through a few pages, concentrating on an area that's of immediate interest, so a note advising how to extra the single point of data might or might not have been buried in some text elsewhere.

This is the type of book where you look up the basics of the information you want, then go to another book to get the rest of the information (background, caveats, usage, etc) that will be required to implement the command successfully.

One major problem with this book, though, is that it is riddled with typos ("CDROMg", "Alapha computer") which may be off-putting to some users. (For the most part, scripts appeared not to have many typos, but the accompanying text is full of them.)

I gave it the benefit of the doubt, in awarding it 4 stars. 3.5 would have been more appropriate. I'm shopping for another PowerShell book now...

Excellent reference, could use a proofread 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This resource kit is very informative, but I've never seen a book with so many typographical errors. Fortunately, almost all of the errors are not material in that they do not affect the accuracy of the content. But the book should have undergone a proofreading or at least a comprehensive spelling/grammar check.
Typo issues aside, the book is a very useful resource. The coverage of Vista's new (file) image-based deployment is comprehensive. Changes such as KMS (for licensing), admx (for Group Policy), file/registry virtualization (under UAC and IE Protected Mode), and BCD (replaces boot.ini) are discussed. Key additions to the collection of Group Policy objects are highlighted. And, of course, there is a lot of trivia-type information that, though interesting, may not find actual day-to-day use.
The resource kit tools are focused mainly on enterprise deployment and scripting. If you are looking for the types of tools included with previous Windows resource kits, you will be disappointed.

Boring but useful 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I used this book to pass the 70-290 exam.
This book contains a lot of useful information.
It is a great reference book too.
This book is really boring. It is not a book that you will enjoy reading.

It is a good book for experts and as a reference. For beginners who are just starting, I would recommend the QUE books.
