Editorial Review:

The cover of Windows XP All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies boasts that it's "nine books in one." That's a stretch--it's really a book about Microsoft Windows XP for novices, with supplementary information about America Online and MSN--but cover claims aside, this book represents a good value for someone new to computing. Woody Leonhard--a respected Windows authority who writes with enough humor to keep things light but not so much as to obscure the facts--begins with how to use a mouse and works all the way through installing printers and setting up a little network in a home or small office. Granted, if you've found this page on the Internet you probably don't need Leonhard's "how-to-click" tutorial, but you may be shopping for someone unfamiliar with Windows. This book is good for such people.

While the nine separate indexes (one at the end of each included "book") will annoy you--the unified one at the back of this book is much easier to find and use--Leonhard's style will compensate. He's very good at explaining how to do what Windows XP was meant to do, up to a certain level. Want to add a music file to a Windows Media Player playlist? There's a procedure for that. Want to cancel AOL because you can't stand it? He explains how. He does not, however, provide detail on more complicated jobs like setting up a cable modem or dealing with the specific security risk posed by Universal Plug and Play. Overall, this is a nicely written, friendly book that covers Windows XP well, but to a limited depth. --David Wall

Topics covered: Microsoft Windows XP for home users, particularly novices. Windows XP fundamentals (like windows and the mouse pointer), customization, Internet tools (including Outlook Express and Internet Explorer), America Online (AOL), Microsoft Network (MSN), printers, small networks, and Internet connectivity are all addressed.

Editorial Review:

This practical guide has exactly what you need to work with Windows Server 2008. Inside, you'll find step-by-step procedures for using all of the major components, along with discussions on complex concepts such as Active Directory replication, DFS namespaces and replication, network access protection, the Server Core edition, Windows PowerShell, server clustering, and more. All of this with a more compact presentation and a tighter focus on tasks than you'll find in bulkier references. Windows Server 2008: The Definitive Guide takes a refreshing approach. You won't find the history of Windows NT, or discussions on the way things used to work. Instead, you get only the information you need to use this server. If you're a beginning or intermediate system administrator, you learn how the system works, and how to administer machines running it. The expert administrators among you discover new concepts and components outside of your realm of expertise. Simply put, this is the most thorough reference available for Windows Server 2008, with complete guides to: Installing the server in a variety of different environments File services and the Windows permission structure How the domain name system (DNS) works Active Directory, including its logical and physical structure, hierarchical components, scalability, and replication Group Policy's structure and operation Managing security policy with predefined templates and customized policy plans Architectural improvements, new features, and daily administration of IIS 7 Terminal Services from both the administrator's user's point of view Networking architecture including DNS, DHCP, VPN, RADIUS server, IAS, and IPSec Windows clustering services ---applications, grouping machines, capacity and network planning, user account management Windows PowerShell scripting and command-line technology With Windows Server 2008: The Definitive Guide, you to come away with a firm understanding of what's happening under the hood, but without the sense that you're taking a graduate course in OS theory. If you intend to work with this server, this is the only book you need.

Good stuff 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is very good. It covers, as the title suggests, Networking Foundations. Most of the book is similar to the Windows Server 2003 book by Minasi, however there are sections (which are marked) where Server 2008 new stuff is covered. I've read a lot of server books and most are dry or irrelevant. This book is neither. It has a lot of information that is helpful and even a bit of humour. I'd wholeheartedly recommend this book!

Editorial Review:

Boring but useful 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I used this book to pass the 70-290 exam.
This book contains a lot of useful information.
It is a great reference book too.
This book is really boring. It is not a book that you will enjoy reading.

It is a good book for experts and as a reference. For beginners who are just starting, I would recommend the QUE books.

A Winner 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 31 people found this review helpful.

I bought Hacking Windows Vista to help me make a decision about upgrading to Vista. After reading it, I got more than I bargained for -- it was not just a superficial book dealing with cosmetic changes. It went into depth about making Vista secure, a major concern of mine. It was so well written that nothing was left to guesswork. For example, detailed instructions show you how to undo the hacks that the author suggests.

Yes, I guess I could go all over the Internet looking and eventually get the information the author provides. But the information would be scattered. It is nice to know that it is all in one book so I can start out doing things right from the beginning.

No, I don't know the author. After using computers professionally and personally for twenty-two years, I know a good book when I see one.

Editorial Review:

Vista is the most radical revamping of Windows since 1995. However, along with all the fantastic improvements, there are a couple of things that likely drive you up the wall. Don’t worry, though—just join forces with author Steve Sinchak and you’ll end up feeling as though Microsoft designed Vista just for you! He shows you how to tweak logon screen settings, build custom Sidebar gadgets, personalize Aero Glass with themes and visual styles, turn your PC into an HDTV media center, fine-tune your firewall, and more.
