Hard going 2 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This book is written in an extremely hard to read style, with long and convoluted sentences.

The writing style is almost unbearably boring. It you thought Hardy's "Return of the Native" was too fast paced, this is the book for you!

It also tends to explain the micro details without clearly explaining how it all fits together. In this respect, it almost assumes you have read and understood the Device Driver Kits, although the reader will be generally looking for help getting started with the DDKs.

There also seem to be a lot of omissions, in that it does not do a very good job of getting you started. Want to write a winmodem driver? This book gives you no idea where to start.

Having said all that, you probably need this book if you are writing a WDM driver. It does have a lot of useful information and tips. However it assumes you are a guru already.

Editorial Review:

Clarifies real-world driver programming issues for Microsoft Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows 98 through extensive practical examples, illustrations, advice, and code samples.

Editorial Review:

With Windows Server 2003, Microsoft has the right server for a world now dominated by enterprise networks and web-based server applications. A number of significant improvements make this a more reliable server than Windows 2000, and those who switched have seen notable performance gains. Server 2003 is, in fact, a very competitive solution to Unix in terms of cost, performance, and application development productivity. But getting this server up and running, either as a stand-alone or as part of a multi-site, multi-server network, is a formidable task even for the most experienced system administrators. Our no-fluff guide gives you exactly what you need: all the nuts and bolts for installing, configuring, securing, and managing Server 2003. This focused and practical book clearly documents the complexities of this server, and offers hands-on advice for planning, implementing and growing Windows networks without trying to teach you how to be a system administrator. Learning Windows Server 2003 shows you how to create and manage user accounts (with particular attention to Active Directory), how to manage access to system resources such as printers and files, and how to configure and manage the server s plethora of major subsystems. The book goes into considerable detail about:
  • Windows file and print services
  • Active Directory
  • IIS6 web server
  • Group Policy and other security tools
  • Patch management
  • .NET Framework application server
  • Windows Terminal Services (including their use in conjunction with Microsoft Office and the Small Business Edition)
  • Various networking subsystems that ship with Server 2003
This highly instructive book also provides an introduction to clustering services, and thoroughly documents steps that should be taken to ensure the security of the server and its resources. Windows Server 2003 was designed to meet the needs of companies or organizations that rely on one or more internal computer networks, and our comprehensive reference is the ideal companion.

Editorial Review:

Mastering Windows Server 2008: Enterprise Technologies is one of three new books by best-selling author Mark Minasi on the latest version of Windows Server. It goes beyond the essential services and features of the operating system to address the "extras" of interest to the largest organizations and the advanced training seasoned IT professionals need. The book covers such features as Network Access Protection quarantine, Windows Sharepoint Services, Windows Server Update Services, and the parts of Active Directory and setup that apply to large companies. Topics also include, creating a certificate infrastructure; IPv6, including new DNS and DHCP issues; advanced IP; virtual private networks; DFS and DFS-N; migrating, merging, and modifying your Active Directory; connecting Mac and Linux Clients; building and managing FTP servers; building and managing SMTP/POP servers; and advanced user account management and support. As always, Mark Minasi tells it like it is—providing workarounds for things that don't quite work as they should and describes in detail many undocumented features.

The other two new books by Mark Minasi are Mastering Windows Server 2008: Networking Foundations, which provides beginners what they need to know to get started with the new software, and Mastering Windows Server 2008: Essential Technologies, which thoroughly explores all of the features and tasks IT professionals need to know to set up and manage a typical Windows Server 2008 network day-to-day. Although each of the three books stands alone, taken together they constitute the update of the market-leading Mastering Windows Server 2003.

Editorial Review:

This book is not authorized or approved by Microsoft, Citrix, or anyone else! Instead of vendor marketing speak, this book tells you how Terminal Server actually works. This book is not an administrator’s guide. Rather, it’s written for IT consultants, system engineers, and architects who must plan, design, implement, and optimize Windows 2003-based Terminal Server systems. It's filled with real-world, proven strategies created specifically for Windows Server 2003. See how some of the world's largest companies are using pure Terminal Server 2003 environments.

  • Are you thinking about using Windows Server 2003's Terminal Services capabilities?

Simple, Fast Instructions on Doing Most Things 5 out of 5 stars.
43 of 43 people found this review helpful.

I have two Windows XP books sitting on my desk. One of them is a monumental tome, 1450 or so pages that tells you how to do everything and inexhausing detail. Sometimes I need that kind of detail. Other times it is so much detail that I can't find the small tidbit of information I need to know to do something.

I'm not really a power user. I use the computer to do the tasks I need and don't make it a hobby to go explore all the things that could be done.

For instance, I just got a digital camera. I suppose that there is stuff on how to use it in the big book, but on page 70 of this book is a simple do this, now do that set of instructions to get the digital camera images into the computer from the camera. That's all I wanted to do and I was able to do it quickly and easily.

That's the format of this book. It is organized by that task you want to perform. Then under each task there are a set of simplified instructions, complete with what the screen should look like. For most things, this is where I look first, it saves a lot of time.

    Editorial Review:

    * The perfect guide for visual learners who are brand-new to Windows XP and want to be shown-rather than told-how to solve problems and work through tasks
    * Features highly visual two-page tutorials and full-color step-by-step screen shots that walk Windows newcomers through tasks such as working with files, sharing a computer, browsing the Web, using e-mail, and even creating movies
    * Covers new SP2 enhancements, including the new Windows Firewall and wireless interface as well as updates to Windows Update, Media Player, and Internet Explorer
