Words from a real Dummy 4 out of 5 stars.

I have had experience in the main frame world in the distant past but have been out of the hands on world for about 4 years now. This book was very good at getting me up to speed. The directions and explanations were easy to read and concise. The only way it could have been better for me was if they likened commands to those of other operating systems. Well you can't have everything. All in all a very good guide book for beginners and those with experience in bronze age of computers.

Support and not administration is the goal of this book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

While I appreciate the frustration of some people who have purchased the book only to find there is little about Windows 2000 or that the book is not a good reference for *administering* a Windows NT/2000 system, that was never the intention of this book. The very first paragraph of the introduction (also available on-line at Amazon.com) tells the reader: "If you are looking for a book to help you pass any of the Microsoft certification tests, you would be better off putting this book back on the shelf and looking elsewhere." There are already so many books on administering Windows NT/2000 and it was never my intention to repeat what was already available.

The key word in the title is "Supporting" and not "Administering" Windows NT/2000. As I also say in the introduction, the book covers "the day-to-day operation of supporting users in a Windows NT environment" (which also applies to Windows 2000). While I do address some administrative functions, the purpose is solely to talk about these issues within the context of supporting users and not administering Windows. Therefore, a great deal of this book can be applied to any computer environment, whether you are using Windows or not. Because Windows is so wide-spread, it makes sense to address the issues within this context in order to provide the necessary information to as much people as possible.

One of the basic motivations behind writing the book from this perspective is that it does little good when the administrator knows what buttons to press, but the users do not have the knowledge to use their systems effectively and there is little help (i.e. support) when they run into problems. Because the maintenance of any computer system is such a large portion of the total cost of ownership, companies need to look at the processes that help them reduce the maintenance costs. That means providing more effective support and this is where my book comes in.

My best suggestion is to read the introduction on-line and keep in mind that this is not a book on administering Windows, but rather on supporting users in a Windows environment. I really don't want you to buy it if that's not what you are looking for.

Editorial Review:

Discusses best practices for effective Windows NT/ 2000 support, world-class help desk and training solutions, organizing, documenting, and managing your network, and minimizing disruption in Windows 2000 migration. Softcover. CD-ROM included.

A good introductive read to NT 4.0 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

New Riders books seem to be great for introducing concepts, not studying for them. Although I used this book (and Exam Cram and Transcenders), it was my experience as a network administrator that got me through the NT Server 4.0 exam this afternoon. The numerous spelling mistakes were annoying. The NT Server 4.0 exam dwells a great deal on RAS, and this book simply does not have the necessary information you need to pass. This said, I don't think much of the SYBEX books at all. They're wishy-washy and not for serious MCSE studying. In fact, my company has withdrawn them from their reference library for this very reason. My advice? Read a few books, use the Exam Cram, take lots of practice tests (Transcender are STILL the best)and if you know your stuff, the NT Server 4.0 exam should be no problem for you. Some people are better at exams than others (I hate them), but I got through with 4 seconds to spare. Sure, read this book, but make SURE you read others as well.

Prepare well, and you'll pass.

A Ho Hum Book 3 out of 5 stars.

I bought the book back in 1996 when I needed something to augment the software. I'd say the average rating at this point, 3 1/2, is a bit high. This is an average book. I can see where it *might* be of benefit to some users, but it has always seemed to me surprisingly short on details. There're some good explanations of things but in my view they tend to be overviews. In three years of use, I don't think it's solved more than two or three problems, and they were not of any great consequence. The CD-ROM included with the book has been of no help. The book strikes me as having been written by a number of people without a real focus. IMHO it's more like a dictionary or reference, and its focus is like them.

I think slightly higher of Mansfield's book, Windows NT 4 Workstation. At least, it has some more practical and easily useful info that's easier to read. Norton has a book on this subject, but I have no idea of it's quality. If you're into networking and the server side of things, try Mark Minasi's Mastering Windows NT Server 4. It's applicable to Workstations too.

Since Windows 2000 will be available in about 2 months, Feb. 2000, this book may lose its relevance fast.
