Great learning tool 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am currently taking a videography class where we are using iMovie. When I finished reading the book, I was able to go to class and edit my first film project with confidence. Prior to reading this, I had no knowledge of using iMovie. The book is broken down into simple steps which are easy to follow. Of course, it doesn't cover everything in depth, but provides an excellent foundation for further learning. I am totally sold on the Visual Quickproject Series and hope they write more books on other software packages.

Editorial Review:

If you're like many users, you may just now be figuring out what Apple may have neglected to mention: A built-in movie studio-in the form of the free iMovie and iDVD apps included in Mac OS X-does not a moviemaker make. This book, however, does! Realizing that you won't want to waste a single minute reading about all you can do with iMovie and iDVD, best-selling author Jeff Carlson cuts straight to the chase in this compact, low-priced volume, using simple project-based instruction and big, colorful screen shots to guide you through the process of making your first movie with iMovie and iDVD. By focusing on a single goal (making that first movie) rather than exploring every option and feature, Jeff demonstrates the quickest, easiest, smartest route to cinematic success. Each short lesson builds on the last as you learn how to shoot, edit, and produce your own movies and then distribute them on DVDs to share with friends, family, and colleagues.

Editorial Review:

If the current generation of the Apple Macintosh, which enables anyone to edit video and author a DVD right out of the box, represents the future of multimedia computers, then The Macintosh Digital Hub represents the future of multimedia books. Illustrated in color, and with a DVD included, this book can be read, watched, or put to use as a desktop handbook.

The new Macintosh is much more than a computer, and Jim Heid's book explains how to make the most of media management tools like iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD. Using all of these tools to control and manage digital music, photos, and video and then share them with others is what this book, and the digital hub philosophy, is all about. Apple's online documentation is more than adequate in most cases, especially since the software itself is so easy to use. This book picks up where the official docs leave off--how to use these tools in the real world, and how to use them together.

In addition to text about simply using the software, there are sections detailing things that every digital jockey should know: what MP3 compression is and how it affects what you hear, printing digital photos, tips for editing video, creating DVD menus, recording Internet radio, and importing and exporting photos and video for the Web. There's also a large section on Apple's iPod and how to use it for more than just music. The single best tip was learning how to record live Internet radio streams and save them to disk.

Jim Heid has written an informative and fun manual. A small, friendly book, The Macintosh Digital Hub should be the second thing you buy after getting that hot new iMac, or the first thing given to a new owner of one. --Mike Caputo

Misleading Title for a Beginners Guide 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is very misleading. It claims to be a book about doing "Everything" with iMovie. The reality is that 50% of the book is generic movie blurb without a mention of iMovie. The rest is a beginners guide to iMovie.

If you want well rounded iMovie books. Get Pogues Missing Manual book and also a copy of Erica Saduns book. Then you will be able to do everything with iMovie.

Give this one a miss.

This Book Shows You How to Make Movies 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

... iMovie is a very easy-to-use program, but the most important part of making a good movie is the raw footage, and "How to do Everything with iMovie" shows you how to handle everything from camcorder selection to the subtleties of proper lighting. It makes it unique among the iMovie books I've read, which focus strictly on software and not on the most important subjects of all. ... I highly recommend this book. You will learn how to make great videos, even with a cheap camcorder.

Editorial Review:

Now you can make exciting digital movies using this easy-to-use and information-packed resource. Covering all editing basics, as well as serious film-making techniques, you will be able to successfully apply visual effects and control sound with pinpoint accuracy-- and deliver digital stories you never thought possible.

One idiot's review of The Complete Idiot's Guide to iMovie2 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

iMovie2 does not come with an instruction book, and the iMac booklet helps precious little, so I was pleased to find Brad Miser's Idiot Guide (which is a series I like anyway). The book is both imformative and insightful, plus a lot of fun to read. It got me going with iMovie in very short order, and when I emailed Mr. Miser to clarify a point, I got a prompt and effective answer. Highly recommended.

Why Fumble When You Can Read It in Detail? 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

There are few things as satisfying and fun to the videographer as making professional movies - videos that you actually want to watch a second time or more - and Apple's iMovie software is THE tool to do just that. You get superb results from an inexpensive piece of software - IF you can use it. While the program is exceptionally simple, there is only an on screen "Help Menu," and we all know how those work: everything but the question you need answered, it seems. Into the void has rushed Brad Miser with wit and wisdom, and with all the answers and instruction you need and then some. His Idiot's Guide is a marvelous introduction to video/movie making, and he walks you through composition, editing, mixing, enhancing, titling, effects, and stuff you never thought possible when you bought that video camera (or even thought about buying it). Miser is one of those very few authors that are effectively "high tech" and "high touch," he writes with clarity, and with an obvious love of his subject. If Amazon would allow it, I'd give this six stars.

Editorial Review:

The Complete Idiot¿s Guide to iMovie 2 provides beginning to intermediate users everything they need to know to download, edit, polish, and view or send their home video productions, including background for understanding the tools and steps to create Digital Video; how to create video tracks; how to use transitions, sound effects, and other special elements; and how to prepare movies for distribution and viewing on the Web, on TV and in emails. A must-have for all digital video enthusiasts!
