Not Worth the Money!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I had much higher expectations for this book...perhaps too high. Normally the Dummies line is rather well thought out and explains most application attributes fairly well. I found this book to be dull, lifeless, and the author focusing more on humor than useful information to keep his reader from putting down this book. One major gripe is in the area on the "mail merge" function as it relates to "envelopes and labels." The explanation of this function becomes too hairy even for experienced computer users, and needs to be revised extensively. If you have no other recourse, this book will, at least, get you started. However, if you need something with a little more bite...I'd recommend the Visual QuickStart Guide.

Editorial Review:

This text provides Mac users with the necessary information needed to get up-to-speed with features that have been added to the product since the 1994 version. Mac users will get the same features that their PC counterparts have. The text covers all the basics of Microsoft Office 97, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook. Readers will learn how to share information among these applications, and how the Office applications relate to the Web.

Microsoft Getting Started in Office X in softcover. 1 out of 5 stars.
20 of 23 people found this review helpful.

This book is simply a nicely printed version of the very limited info that comes on the Office v X CD ROM "Getting Started" file. They really mean just getting started. This book is a little bit expanded with a few nubbins of extra detail, but not much. This is NOT a Power User's Guide. A guide for a beginner to both Office and OS X, at best, with some glaring missing areas.

Useful in case you just like to have a printed version of the bare basics instead of needing to use or print out the electronic help/info.pdf material which is basic at best. A more readable and accessible version of the electronic material. If you've been using earlier versions of Office, you don't need this book. I bought it only because I've skipped two Office version generations, but the basics don't seem to have changed much.

There is some useful expansion of the Entourage procedures particularly on the Calendar which is good, beyond the CD ROM material.

Entourage e-mail is essentially identical with the outstanding OS X Mail package which is nicely described in Pogue's OS X: The Missing Manual. If Entourage is new to you as it is to me, you may find the additional detail handy.

I haven't found any reason to go to the trouble of shifting my mail to Entourage from the extremely useful OS X Mail system. Unless you don't start with OS X Mail before you buy Office, you may not find the Entourage mail material of any use.

This book should be avoided if you plan to exploit the many facets of Office, a great many of which are either unknown to the author or never used by him. For instance, the basics of creating mailing labels, a common and very useful function, is treated only lightly and then only as using an existing address book as merge data as a project. Nary a word on how to create individual or a sheet of mailing labels from scratch, or using Avery or other label formats, a fatal deficiency for what purports to be a "Power User" guide...

Editorial Review:

Now you can use Office on your Macintosh just like a pro. This book does much more than provde a rundown of features for Office v. X. It takes you from the basics to the advanced tips and tricks that allow you to take charge of your business and personal data using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage. Once you have a handle on each Office product, you'll move on to several real-world projects that allow you to put your knowledge to the test. Learn how real Mac "power users" get the most out of Office v. X!

Lots of Advanced Information 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This "missing manual" reviewer sounds like he or she is involved with that other book. In fact, the Office 2001 for Mac: The Complete Reference title has plenty of highly advanced information on using formulas in Excel, using the List Manager, and setting up mail merges in Word. The person who says otherwise isn't telling you the truth about this book. It's great, just great!

Failed on my one test 3 out of 5 stars.

I had a question about using outlines in Word. (Why my "body text" styled paragraphs are showing up with Outline Level 1.) I turned to this book and looked in the index. It mentions only two pages about outlining in Word: "outlining documents, Word 2001 keyboard shortcuts, 288-289." The rest of the outlining entries concern PowerPoint and Excel. So, even though I'm using Office 2001, I turned to my copy of Office 98 Bible by LeVitus et al. It has 13 pages about outlining in Word. So I'm ordering the Office 2001 Bible now. The "Complete Reference" failed me on my admittedly only test so far.

Editorial Review:

Microsoft Office 2001 for the Macintosh computer, is a new program which supports Mac technology without losing any of the trademark Mac style. This reference provides comprehensive coverage of the new Project Gallery, Entourage features, and the new versions of Word, excel and PowerPoint. It also provides details on features which are exclusive to Mac Office, such as QuickTime movies in PowerPoint and the new formatting palettes, toolbars and icons.

Editorial Review:

Office 2001 for the Mac is divided into easy-to-access parts that make learning Office 2001 a breeze. There is an introduction to Office (with tasks common to all of the Office applications), separate parts for each Office application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage), and one part explaining how to use the applications together. Someone needing to perform a specific task should be able to look in the corresponding chapter to find out how to do it in an extremely focused way. The selected tasks will be those that most users of the applications need to do. This book is geared toward the beginning to intermediate Mac user.

NOT a "Complete Reference" 2 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I did not learn ONE new thing from this book. Been using 2001 for a few months now and already know the basics.

Book may serve newbies well but offers NO instruction on advanced features.

What we need is a Manual like Microsoft used to ship that covers EVERYTHING.

I have waited 2-3 months for this and find it useless. Sorry to be negative but want a lap-reading book that covers the software from A to Z.

A good guide to office 2001 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is a very well presented guide to using the new Office suite. It contains very useful tips that even experienced users of earlier versions will find useful. I made severeal beneficial changes to my preferences as a result. It is a very well illustrated book that can be used as a reference guide as well as being read. The authors provide contact information so that more esoteric problems can be addressed. I have just used it to learn how to create hyperlinks and how to use sounds from other email clients in the Entourage email suite. I recommend this large paperbook as a good starting point for learning more about the capabilities of the software.

Editorial Review:

Here's a one-stop, comprehensive reference for readers using the latest version of Office for the Macintosh. This definitive guide covers all the applications in the suite, including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint "RM", and Internet Explorer for the Macintosh, and introduce the new Alpaca e-mail application and Picasso publishing application. Like all Microsoft Running titles, this book makes authoritative information easy to access and use -- with everything from concise, to-the-point procedures to detailed explanations and extensive cross-referencing.
