I've been getting used to OS X Panther for about a month now, making slow, incremental progress with my comfort level and efficiency. I picked up this book yesterday, and WOW, what a difference! In just 24 hours I feel like I'm some kind of power user -- all thanks to this book, which explains how to streamline and customize Panther with cool, focused tips and some well-chosen shareware apps. And it's such a good read -- I love Dr. Mac's clear and easygoing style! I especially like the "What Other Power Users Think You Should Know" chapter. Great stuff!

The content seems to be OK. But for a software book that is touted to be a visual presentation I was very disappointed with the lack of color in the book. The most color I saw was on the front cover. Very dull. If I had a choice to do it over I would pick a different publication and author.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

With its rep for being the sort of machine that won't intimidate even the most inexperienced users, what's the appeal of the Mac® for hard-core geeks? The Mac has always been an efficient tool, pleasant to use and customize, and eminently hackable. But now with Mac OS® X's BSD core, many a Unix® developer has found it irresistible. The latest version of Mac OS X, called Panther, makes it even easier for users to delve into the underlying Unix operating system. In fact, you can port Linux® and Unix applications and run them side-by-side with your native Aqua® apps right on the Mac desktop. Still, even experienced Unix users may find themselves in surprisingly unfamiliar territory as they set out to explore Mac OS X. Even if you know Macs through and through, Mac OS X Panther is unlike earlier Macs, and it's radically different from the Unix you've used before. Enter Mac OS X Panther for Unix Geeks by Brian Jepson and Ernest E. Rothman, two Unix geeks who found themselves in the same place you are. The new edition of this book is your guide to figuring out the BSD Unix system and Panther-specific components that you may find challenging. This concise book will ease you into the Unix innards of Mac OS X Panther, covering such topics as:
  • A quick overview of the Terminal application, including Terminal alternatives like iTerm and GLterm
  • Understanding Open Directory (LDAP) and NetInfo
  • Issues related to using the GNU C Compiler (GCC)
  • Library linking and porting Unix software
  • An overview of Mac OS X Panther's filesystem and startup processes
  • Creating and installing packages using Fink and Darwin Ports
  • Building the Darwin kernel
  • Using the Apple® X11 distribution for running X Windows® applications on top of Mac OS X
The book wraps up with a quick manpage-style reference to the "Missing Manual Pages" --commands that come with Mac OS X Panther, although there are no manpages. If you find yourself disoriented by the new Mac environment, Mac OS X Panther for Unix Geeks will get you acclimated quickly to the foreign new areas of a familiar Unix landscape.

Great book for new learner or old geezer. Gives information in easy to follow steps with good illustrations. Goes one step at a time and doesn't assume reader knows "some of the steps".
I would like to see a more advanced book written in this teaching style.

Editorial Review:

The Macworld Mac OS X Bible offers a comprehensive look at what is arguably the most complicated and advanced operating system currently available for consumer-level PCs. OS X represents a major step in the evolution of the Macintosh computer, but it is not an easy step. The authors understand this and present OS X in a clear and unintimidating way.

The book weighs in at nearly 800 pages and the authors have covered nearly every aspect of OS X. From installation through maintenance and good backup habits, they explore Mac OS X and all its installed applications. There are few stones left unturned, including such important new concepts as the "superuser" account, the NetInfo Manager, and access rights and privileges.

The friendly and clear style of the writing masks the complexity of OS X and discussing it in bite-size chunks will help any level of Mac user understand. Each chapter is littered with sidebars, notes, tips, and tricks, offering an abundance of information on everything from setting a default Web browser to connecting pre-OS X Macs to their newer brothers to writing scripts in the new AppleScript.

If you're attempting to upgrade, have upgraded, or plan on diving into OS X, keep the Mac OS X Bible handy. Even browsing through the pages long after you've upgraded is a sure way to pick up a new trick. --Mike Caputo

Mac OS X Tiger in a Snap 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

While this book is well written, it is somewhat shallow in content and missing many details about features that Mac OS X Tiger offers. I also purchased Mac OS X: The Missing Manual, Tiger Ed., and found it much more helpful, well indexed and the content was more extensive. I strongly recommend The Missing Manual volume over this book.

Editorial Review:

A computer is a big investment, but the time you spend to learn your way around it shouldn't be. Mac OS X Tiger In a Snap is designed specifically for you and the millions of other people who don't have the time to devote to learning the Mac operating system inside and out before you begin using it. The modular format of Mac OS X Tiger In a Snap lets you zero in on the information you need and then get back to work. You will learn how to:

  • Work with "home office" applications
  • Network your Mac
  • Communicate with iChat
  • Work with the iLife applications
  • Customize Mac OS X
  • Update system software
  • Perform rescue operations

With expert tips and tricks interspersed throughout the tasks, Mac OS X Tiger In a Snap will help you quickly get up to speed with your Mac.

Expensive series but surely valuable 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

My one and only complaint is the cost of these version specific books. The next OS X will be out in just a few months, but here we are with a 10.4 specific book. And of course this book by itself doesn't do much: you need others in the same series to have a good overall picture.

But: as I expect with Apple docs, these are very nice: good looking, well presented, excellent coverage. For a Windows admin needing to understand OS X, these would be perfect, and they also are aimed at specific Apple Certification courses, so someone planning to take those would also benefit.

Be warned: there's plenty of detail left out. You need to do the exercises, you need to experiment, and you probably will need other resources too. But this (with the other Server oriented books in the seies) definitely is an excellent introduction and reference.

Editorial Review:

Focusing specifically on Account Management and Deploying Mac OS X Server, this comprehensive reference provides in-depth information on Mac OS X Server's technical architecture. System administrators, IT professionals, and Mac enthusiasts will learn the details of how to deploy Mac OS X Server within a multiplatform, heterogeneous environment, and how to manage Mac OS X Server accounts. This is the second of two volumes certified by Apple Computer. Following the learning objectives of the Apple Certified System Administrator exam, this book is a perfect supplement to Apple's own training class and an in-depth technical reference for existing system administrators and engineers.

Editorial Review:

Mac OS X is a UNIX-based operating system that runs on some of the finest hardware in the world. It comes with some excellent development tools, and a first-class Java 2 Standard Edition implementation, including a HotSpot client virtual machine, tied right into the operating system. Apple has made Java a first-class citizen of Mac OS X, and this book shows how Java developers can take advantage of the power they've been given.

Using Java as a development language on Mac OS X, you can write portable pure Java applications that run and look like native programs, or you can develop programs that exploit the Cocoa programming interface, allowing you to build powerful Mac OS X applications and take advantage of all the functionality provided by Apple's exciting Aqua UI. You can also exploit native operating-system functionality without writing any C or C++ code, through APIs such as JDirect. This book explains to the experienced Java developer where to start, what's possible, and where to go.

This book covers:

The role of Java in Mac OS X
Using Mac OS X as a Java development platform
Writing portable Java Code
Taking advantage of Mac OS X's features in pure Java applications
Developing enterprise applications on Mac OS X
Deploying Java code as a Mac OS X application
Accessing OS-specific functions through MRJ and JDirect
Using Java to program Cocoa

Best technical book in many years 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This is really a rare book. Not stupid-funny, and so knowledgeable and pedagogic. I had bought my new iMac, the first since my Mac+ nearly 20 years ago. It looked like a modern Mac, and worked as such. Then I got Joe Kissel's book! And discovered all the stuff underneath. The holy grail of UNIX. And how smart the engineers at Apple still are! I was amazed by how many intelligent goodies they have put into the box. And really enjoyed the profound know-how of Joe Kissell, and his many step-by-step guided tours into the heart of the iMac. I learnt to install a firewall- and that I already had a firewall in my box. I was taught GIMP, and file sharing, and all about the iApp's. Backing up, booting and so on. Apache-in-the-box too. Thank you VERY much, Joe!
