Editorial Review:

The one thing that current Mac folks don't know enough about is the underlying Unix stuff. Educating the users will lead to (a) more conversions to Mac and (b) folks who are used to the Mac GUI getting more out of the system currently.

The Mac OS X UNIX Toolbox is a handy, compact guide that teaches you how to use UNIX tools on Mac OS X. The goal is to make the reader comfortable with the same command-line tools used by experts world wide. Over 1000 commands will help them monitor system status and security, find files, list directories, use services, and access resources.

Those familiar with the award-winning Macintosh UI may not be familiar with all the behind-the-scenes utilities and tools, and others who are familiar with other flavors of Unix (like Linux or BSD) need a guide that will familiarize them with the workings of UNIX on Mac OS X.

The book’s primarily goal is to expand UNIX expertise in these and other areas:

·         Using the shell

·         Finding software online

·         Working with files

·         Playing with music and images

·         Administering the file system

·         Backing up data

·         Checking and managing running processes

·         Accessing network resources

·         Handling remote system administration

·         Securing the machine

·         Using command-line tools and utilities

Excellent Niche book 5 out of 5 stars.

When Ms. Langer authored the Visual Quick Start Guide to Mac OS X, I wondered who the audience would be. It is a very, very basic book. Now she offeres this book for the intermediate to advanced Mac OS X user and nicely fills out her coverage of the new OS. This book is current with version X.1 and offers a nice introduction to the deeper and darker corners of OS X's unix underpinnings. There is a good introduction to the command line and the most current tutorial on paper of AppleScript for OS X. Good stuff. She also covers the obscure tools in the utilities directory of the Application folder. This book won't make you a Unix guru but will open the door to that world if you want to go there. There is also enough (but concise) of a rehash of her previous book to enable the old style mac power user to start right in.

Editorial Review:

Designed for more experienced users who know the basics of file management and working with the Macintosh desktop, Mac OS X Advanced: Visual QuickPro Guide provides more advanced information in an accessible format. Veteran Macintosh columnist and author Maria Langer shows readers the basics of OS X, including networking and telecommunications, security, fine-tuning functionality, customizing Mac OS X, working with OS X server, and more. The Visual QuickPro Guide format offers an easy, visual approach to teaching Mac OS X, using plenty of pictures and concise, straightforward commentary.

A Real Time Saver 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This book is all it claims to be. Concise and easy to use. I received my OS X.2 on a new G4 and after spending several hours trying to just do the everyday things that had become second nature in OS 9, I went to Amazon.com and found this book advertised. It is exactly what I needed to make the conversion. I already had two books on OS 9/OS X but at 1,000 pages each, what I needed either wasn't in there or was buried too deeply to find quickly.

If you're converting from OS 9 to OS X, do yourself a favor and order this book at the same time. I can say from experience and without exaggeration, it will save you hours.

One thing I disagree with the author on. In "Start Here" of the book, he says "Don't sit down and read it cover to cover." I think he's right and wrong. The tips are easy to find without reading the whole book; but his writing style makes the reading fun and knowing some of the conversion tips before needing them reduced my stress level considerably.

Editorial Review:

Mac OS X Conversion Kit: 9 to 10 Side by Side aims to take readers from their old Mac operating system to the new one. There's a lot to learn and a lot to get used to, and this book makes the learning curve as smooth as possible by cataloging the most important things you need to know and showing them in a format Mac users will appreciate; the old way is on the left page, and the new way is on the right page. Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar promises to offer exciting new features that will change how people use their Macs, such as iChat, improved Unix tools, Bluetooth-enabled contact management software, QuickTime 6, and advanced handwriting recognition. To take full advantage of these new features, Mac users will want Side By Side at their side.

MacOS X For someone that has never used a computer 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The subject should be the title of this Book.....This book is at such a beginner level that I am surprised that it was even written.

It covers only the most very basics of MacOS X and the troubleshooting section (why I bought the book) is a complete joke....

It definitely was not worth the [money] I paid for it...this is a book to get your parents if they buy a computer for the first time after MacOS X comes pre-installed as the default OS from Apple.

I cannot believe that Ms. Bucki would write such a beginner book when OS X is not the default OS or, at the time when this book came out, not even pre-installed as an optional OS...

I think I will write my own OS X Book now....it is obvious that it cannot be hard to write a beginners book after looking at this one...

Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) H.O.T. gets you up-to-speed on Mac OS X 10.2 and hands-on with all of its popular i-apps!

  • Project-based, step-by-step instructions based on lynda.com's classroom-tested tutorials make learning a snap.
  • Provides both operating system basics and detailed instructions for Mac OS X 10.2's bundled i-applications.
  • Companion CD contains not just project files, but music, photos, and video clips as well as plug-ins to use with the applications.
  • Increasingly, users are viewing their computers as not just a work or educational tool, but as windows into an ever-expanding digital universe. Nowhere is this shift more apparent than with Apple's new operating system: Mac OS X 10.2, also known as Jaguar. Included with the operating system are applications for instant messaging, working with photos and music, burning CDs, watching DVDs, cruising the Web, and more. However, it's difficult to use any of these great tools effectively if you don't understand how to work with the operating system itself.

Enter Mac OS X Hands-On Training. In these pages, veteran author and trainer Garrick Chow tackles first the operating system, then its digital goodies--all in the friendly, hands-on style that has become the hallmark of this popular tutorial-based series based on the classroom-tested training courses at lynda.com. Chow devotes the first sections of the book to grounding readers in the skills they'll need to use the OS. Then, once readers are Mac OS X fluent, the volume goes on to provide detailed coverage of each of the system's bundled "digital hub" applications: iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iTools, and iChat. Along the way, readers will find plenty of tips and tricks that illustrate not just how to use the applications, but how to use them creatively.

    Editorial Review:

Mac OS X is a stunning technical achievement--a virtually crash-proof Unix core paired with the sleek Aqua interface, bringing style, usability, and stability to a new level. It has almost everything that Macintosh fans have been waiting for: protected memory, crash resistance, and the ability to run the 18,000 existing Mac programs and an unlimited supply of Unix and Open Source software. An instant success among longtime Apple users and developers, the new Mac operating system is becoming the system of choice among serious Unix users as well. There is plenty of territory to explore in Mac OS X, and O'Reilly's latest Nutshell book, Mac OS X in a Nutshell, offers all audiences--both longtime Mac users and converts--the most complete guide to this remarkable operating system.

In the tradition of O'Reilly's Nutshell series, this new title offers a thorough treatment of Mac OS X version 10.2, from its BSD Unix foundation to Aqua, the new user interface. The book's "Unix Command Reference" is the most complete and thorough coverage of Mac OS X Unix commands you can find anywhere. Each command and option in this section has been painstakingly tested and checked against Jaguar--even the manpages that ship with the system can't compete in accuracy. The reference incorporates the new command-line tools that come with Apple's Developer tools. It familiarizes readers with the Finder and the Dock, file management, system configuration, network administration issues, and more. Later chapters include bonus material for the Unix user, including advanced use of the Terminal and how to configure a DAMP (Darwin, Apache, MySQL, Perl/PHP) web publishing system. Other topics covered in the book include:

    • Filesystem overview
    • Running Java applications
    • System and Network Administration
    • Directory Services and NetInfo
    • Scripting on Mac OS X
    • Using CVS
    • Unix Command Reference
    • Installing and Running X Windows and BSD Unix applications
Mac OS X in a Nutshell follows the common-sense O'Reilly approach, cutting through the hype and giving readers practical details they can use every day. Serious users who want more from their system will find everything they need to know systematically documented in this book. It provides a wealth of knowledge for anyone who wants to make the most of Mac OS X.

Worth every penny! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book awhile back, when Mac OS X first came out, and it was a tremendous help in getting me over the rough spots in getting the new system to run on my vintage B&W Power Mac G3.

So when I read a review from some dude who claims, "Between simple experimentation and using Help, you will quickly learn more than you will ever get from reading this book," I stare in disbelief. There is no way that person could have read this book, beyond perhaps a few pages. The information in the troubleshooting section alone is more than worth the price, and it contains information that is definitely NOT in the Help menus, nor something you could just hang out there and figure out for yourself.

I wonder why people trash books when it's clear they never read the book in the first place. I read this book and it's great! And that's all I have to say about the subject.

    Editorial Review:

Written by a noted Mac expert and author of the Windows 2000 Mac Support Little Black Book (Coriolis, 1-57610-388-9). Designed for all user levels, this book covers the new features of Mac OS X including emphasis on major changes from previous versions of the Mac OS. Features proactive coverage of setup and preventative maintenance, especially for new users or those migrating from older Mac OS versions. Uses a logical, sequential approach with concise overviews and questions then immediate solutions; includes step-by-step instructions, troubleshooting, informative sidebars, plus a quick reference card. Covers Mac-savvy applications, using older Mac programs under Mac OS X, font management, and backup techniques.
