Mac Newbie 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

When a 25 year pc user switches to a Mac there is a definite learning curve. This book was a great place to start. I found many of the shortcuts that Mac users already know, but I couldn't find readily listed anywhere on my Mac. Long time users might find this boring, but it was quite helpful to me as a new user. Good screen photos support the hints and tips, so it's very easy to understand. No long boring explanations, just nice short snippets.

Editorial Review:

With so many books out there on Mac OS X Leopard, what makes this one better and different is its focus. While other Leopard books can regularly be 500-plus pages, this book cuts through all the technical jargon and gives you exactly what you want: the most important, most requested, and just plain coolest things about Leopard that will change the way you work on your Mac. With Leopard's newest features, this book will show you how to customize your workspace with Spaces, search and view your files fast with Quick Look, restore any file on your system with Time Machine, and much more. Each page covers just one topic, complete with full-color photos and screenshots, making it easy to find what you're looking for fast.

What's missing from Server Essentials 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

First, the book is only 363 pages long, not 560 as identified in the Amazon description. So in my opinion a little over priced for the content.

Having said that, I found the book contained a lot of information that I wish had been in Server Essentials. Of course, considering that these are geared towards the Apple exams I suppose you have to give them some leeway.

As I am in the process of planning an OS 10.5 Server upgrade, this book has been helpful. I'm still hoping that someone will write more about Print Queue Management in OS 10.5. If you're looking for more info on that subject, you won't find it in here nor in Server Essentials.

Overall, if you're new to supporting OS 10.5 Server or migrating from 10.4 to 10.5, then this book has some helpful information - but maybe you can get lucky and find it at a discounted price. I don't feel it's really worth $65 but I'd consider $35 a fair deal.

Editorial Review:

This in-depth look at advanced topics in Mac network administration shows system administrators and other IT professionals how to use Mac OS X Server v10.5 within a multiplatform, heterogeneous environment. Following the learning objectives of the Apple Certified System Administrator course, this book is a perfect study aid for the Apple Certified System Administrator exam.

Editorial Review:

Objective-C is an exciting and dynamic approach to ibased object-oriented programming; it's the approach adopted by Apple as the foundation for programming under Mac OS X, a Unix-based operating system gaining wide acceptance among programmers and other technologists. Objective-C is easy to learn and has a simple elegance that is a welcome breath of fresh air after the abstruse and confusing C++. To help you master the fundamentals of this language, you'll want to keep the "Objective-C Pocket Reference" close at hand. This small book contains a wealth of valuable information to speed you over the learning curve.

In this pocket reference, author Andrew Duncan provides a quick and concise introduction to Objective-C for the experienced programmer. In addition to covering the essentials of Objective-C syntax, Andrew also covers important faces of the language such as memory management, the Objective-C runtime, dynamic loading, distributed objects, and exception handling.

O'Reilly's Pocket References have become a favorite among programmers everywhere. By providing important details in a succinct, well-organized format, these handy books deliver just what you need to complete the task at hand. When you've reached a sticking point in your work and need to get to a solution quickly, the new "Objective-C Pocket Reference" is the book you'll want to have.

The one and only OS X reference tome. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is analogous to the Windows Resource Kits for OS X, only better. The many examples, most using some sort of code to make their point, combined with the depth of topics covered, makes this the one book really serious OS X coders and admins need to have.

Like it's cousin, the MS ResKit, it's dry, concise, and may scare off some folks. And like the ResKit, it's just as essential as a learning tool and reference book rolled into one.

I've seen many reviews that talk about this book as a book for programmers. I don't believe that for one second. I've heard many references to the old days when all admins were programmers and heard tell of greybeard hackers who are equally proficient at both coding and admin work. This book does a similar job of blending the lines between the two tasks, illustrating concepts and giving examples using C and scripting as well as using human readable english. As a non-coding UNIX and OS X aficionado, I look forward to broadening my knowledge of both programming and unix administration as it applies to OS X via this awe-inspiring book.

Probably more helpful for people with no/little Unix experience 3 out of 5 stars.
28 of 38 people found this review helpful.

Although this book is well written in concept, the editing of the final product is awful. There are a great deal of grammatical errors which seemed to me a basic word-processor would have caught.

The book should be titled, more correctly, "Unix Programming for OS X." Unix system programmers will find almost nothing new in this book (gcc, gdb, file-systems, signals, libraries, etc. - although, the Objective-C examples can be helpful in understanding how to implement things in new ways, and also the chapter on Subversion was a nice introduction for me.)

If you are just learning how to program on a Unix platform, I'd recommend this book unequivocally. I paid full price for mine ($70), without taking a hard enough look at the contents and found myself with an expensive, redundant book on my shelf.

Editorial Review:

There are several other books on programming for Mac OS X, but none of them comtain explanations of how to leverage the powerful underlying technologies. This book goes down to the real nitty-gritty of multi-threading, interprocess communication, networking, performance tuning, distributed objects, queues, Bonjour, authentication, the keychain, and directory services. The tools are also covered: gcc, gdb, subversion, Shark, and Saturn.

Editorial Review:

The mark of a craftsman is his familiarity with his tools, the speed with which he can use them to solve simple problems, and his cleverness in using them to solve more complicated challenges. The latest edition of Unix Power Tools explores the standard Unix tools in greater depth than ever, and with better coverage of Linux, FreeBSD, and even the Darwin environment of Mac OS X. It's also been improved by the addition of sections on Perl and Python, programming languages that can often solve Unix problems more adeptly than any specific utility. This detail-filled book distinguishes itself from other guides for Unix gurus with its organizational structure (it's a series of articles that can be absorbed sequentially or individually) and carefully designed and executed index. Like its esteemed predecessors, this book is one you will keep handy.

The authors have achieved a nearly ideal balance in the pages of this book. It's not just a collection of recipes (such collections tend to leave you hanging if you want to do something a little differently), it's not just a book of documentation (books like that have application mainly as references for people who know a lot already), and it's not just a conceptual how-to guide. Unix Power Tools is all of those things, and the overall effect is impressive indeed. If you work with any flavor of Unix, whatever your level of experience, you will benefit by having this book. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to work efficiently, elegantly, and creatively with the Unix tool suite, as well as (to a lesser extent) with Perl and Python scripts. Tips and strategies on customization, document generation, process management, and networking abound in this wisdom-rich volume.
