Running Mac OS X Tiger is the ideal resource for power users and system administrators like you who want to tweak Tiger, the new release of Mac OS X, to run faster, better, or just differently.

If you areready to dig deep into your Mac, this book expertly guides you to the core of Mac OS X. It helps you understand the inner workings of the operating system so you can know how to get the most out of it. And it gives you countless ideas--and step-by-step instruction--for customizing and revving up Tiger to your specific needs and your liking.

Completely revised and updated for Mac OS X Tiger, Running Mac OS X Tiger covers all the new features and functionality of Tiger. You can count on authors Jason Deraleau and James Duncan Davidson to give what you need--and not bother with what you don't. They don't spend time on Finder tips and keyboard shortcuts; they focus on showing you what makes a Mac tick and, more importantly, how you can make it tick just the way you want it to.

Easy to follow and intuitively organized, Running Mac OS X Tiger is divided into three parts: "Getting Started" introduces Mac OS X and explains how it's put together and why it works; "Administration Essentials" gives you the tools you need to examine how your system is running and adjust all the knobs behind its operation; and "Networking and Network Services" covers the ways Mac OS X interfaces with the world around it, including wireless and spontaneous networking. Developer Tools for Mac OS X, including Xcode, are discussed throughout the book as appropriate.

For the growing number of intermediate to advanced users who are ready and eager to customize Mac OS X, Running Mac OS X Tiger delivers everything you need to become master of your Mac.

Not impressed with the visual aspect 2 out of 5 stars.

The content seems to be OK. But for a software book that is touted to be a visual presentation I was very disappointed with the lack of color in the book. The most color I saw was on the front cover. Very dull. If I had a choice to do it over I would pick a different publication and author.

Mac OS X Basic 3 out of 5 stars.
68 of 68 people found this review helpful.

OK, I have nothing really against this book. If you are new to Macintosh and have decided to take the plunge, or if you are a basic Mac user who would like to have the new OS's standard features explained to you, then by all means, get this book. I'll give it 5 stars for beginners.

But if you are at all interested in what makes OS X such a exciting step forward for all Mac users (namely it's Unix underpinings), then get another book. This book taught me nothing I could not learn from playing with the OS for an hour. (Don't underestimate the value of Mac OS X's new Help files)

If you are interested in learning the more interesting features of OS X, I recommend checking out Mac OS X Unleashed by John Ray

BTW, OS X is awesome. If you are thinking about installing it on you G3 or G4, go ahead, you won't be disappointed.

Cheers

Expensive series but surely valuable 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

My one and only complaint is the cost of these version specific books. The next OS X will be out in just a few months, but here we are with a 10.4 specific book. And of course this book by itself doesn't do much: you need others in the same series to have a good overall picture.

But: as I expect with Apple docs, these are very nice: good looking, well presented, excellent coverage. For a Windows admin needing to understand OS X, these would be perfect, and they also are aimed at specific Apple Certification courses, so someone planning to take those would also benefit.

Be warned: there's plenty of detail left out. You need to do the exercises, you need to experiment, and you probably will need other resources too. But this (with the other Server oriented books in the seies) definitely is an excellent introduction and reference.

Editorial Review:

Focusing specifically on Account Management and Deploying Mac OS X Server, this comprehensive reference provides in-depth information on Mac OS X Server's technical architecture. System administrators, IT professionals, and Mac enthusiasts will learn the details of how to deploy Mac OS X Server within a multiplatform, heterogeneous environment, and how to manage Mac OS X Server accounts. This is the second of two volumes certified by Apple Computer. Following the learning objectives of the Apple Certified System Administrator exam, this book is a perfect supplement to Apple's own training class and an in-depth technical reference for existing system administrators and engineers.

Mac OS X Tiger in a Snap 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

While this book is well written, it is somewhat shallow in content and missing many details about features that Mac OS X Tiger offers. I also purchased Mac OS X: The Missing Manual, Tiger Ed., and found it much more helpful, well indexed and the content was more extensive. I strongly recommend The Missing Manual volume over this book.

Editorial Review:

A computer is a big investment, but the time you spend to learn your way around it shouldn't be. Mac OS X Tiger In a Snap is designed specifically for you and the millions of other people who don't have the time to devote to learning the Mac operating system inside and out before you begin using it. • Work with "home office" applications

Pretty clear and a quick read 4 out of 5 stars.
38 of 38 people found this review helpful.

I bought this while waiting for my first ever Mac to arrive, so I suppose it's a credit to Levitus that I felt relatively confident about using it pretty much straight away. The book covers relatively basic topics like the Finder, saving files, navigation, file management etc. As a lifelong Windows user, it all seems pretty familiar stuff.
What it doesn't cover, except in passing, is stuff like how to use the Superdrive, or standard OSX Applications. Oh, they get a half-page mention, but this isn't the book that tells you everything in great detail.
Think of it more as a starting point. But at least it isn't daunting and over-technical.
I found the endlessly jokey tone of the writing a little irritating, like being with a used-car salesman. It's a little bit "loud" if you know what I mean. I also wasn't that impressed by the illustrations which often seem to be on a different page to the one they're described on, needlessly.
Anyway: it's pretty cheap, a quick read, easy to understand, but don't expect in-depth information.

The best and most comprehensive tutorials available 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent programming cook book. Armed with this book and some conceptual background, the world of Cocoa Programming is open to you. This book is not suitable for people who have never programmed before, but you don't need a computer science degree to use it either. The individual recipes are each valuable and explain both the "hows" and "whys" of common Cocoa programming techniques. The book has a "learn by doing" philosophy. The recipes in this book are the best and most comprehensive tutorials available for Cocoa programming, but they are long. Plan to spend several hours working on each recipe. Once mastered, you will be able to modify and reuse each recipe to develop countless applications. This book will give you a sense of how the pieces of Cocoa fit together so that you will be able to more easily approach new programming topics.

Editorial Review:

Cocoa Recipes for Mac OS X takes a practical, no-nonsense, hands-on, step-by-step approach, walking you through the details of building a Cocoa application from start to finish. It explains in detail what the code is doing and why it works, Cocoa Recipes places a decided emphasis on getting an application to work correctly as quickly as possible. This collection of, do-it-yourself recipes guides you through the process of creating classes and subclasses, objects, outlets, and actions. Cocoa is one of the main object-oriented software development environments for Mac OS X.

A taste of 'geekdom' 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

There's a not-so-fine line between knowing your instrument, which serves a specific purpose or purposes, & being a geek. This book walks the line. There's so much more we, as Mac-users, can gain from understanding UNIX, but, of course, there's a limit to how much time & effort can be invested into gaining this insight.

I look at it this way: the time, frustration & money I save just by being able to competently maintain, get around limitations of the OSX interface & repair my system is more than enough compensation. This is the easiest to follow & understand of many UNIX books I've read, or attempted to read. If you have a little patience, this book will bestow rewards.

Editorial Review:

Unix is no longer someone else's OS. With Mac OS X built on top of it, Unix  is becoming a household name, and more and more Mac users are ready to take it on. This book is for them!

Based on a popular series of Unix tips, this book promises to deliver what most other Unix guides fail to: comprehensive tutorials and instruction on specific Unix subjects, commands, and projects, not just a handy reference guide. Arranged into 101 mini tutorials in 11 key technology areas, this book provides all the tricks, techniques, and training that you need to understand how the system works and start using it immediately.  You will quickly learn the basics to working with the Unix command line as well as work on specific tutorials/exercises, including: browsing and searching the directory file-system; viewing, searching, and processing file content; using text editors; shell scripting; cool commands; and more.
