It used to be that two laptops, sitting side by side, couldn't communicate with each other; they may as well have been a thousand miles apart. But that was then, before the advent of Zero Configuration Networking technology. This amazing cross-platform open source technology automatically connects electronic devices on a network, allowing them to interoperate seamlessly-without any user configuration. So now you don't have to lift a finger! Needless to say, it has completely changed the way people connect to devices and programs for printing, file sharing, and other activities.

Zero Configuration Networking: The Definitive Guide walks you through this groundbreaking network technology, with a complete description of the protocols and ways to implement network-aware applications and devices.

Written by two Zero Configuration Networking experts, including one of Apple's own computer scientists, the book covers more than just file sharing and printing. Zero Configuration Networking also enables activities such as music and photo sharing and automatic buddy discovery on Instant Messaging applications. In fact, Zero Configuration Networking can be used for virtually any device that can be controlled by a computer. And this handy guide has the inside scoop on all of its capabilities-and how you can easily apply them in your own environment.

For the technically advanced, Zero Configuration Networking: The Definitive Guide examines the three core technologies that make up Zero Configuration Networking: Link-Local Addressing, Multicast DNS, and DNS Service Discovery. It also reviews a series of APIs, including C-API, Java API, CFNetServices, and Cocoa's NSNetServices.

Whether you want to understand how iTunes works, or you want to network a series of laptops and other devices at your office for maximum efficiency, you'll find all the answers in this authoritative guide.

This is a very useful book on SAP PM.This covers recent Version of of SAP PM ie 4.6x.Flow is smooth.Transaction codes are also available for quick navigation.

Teaches the fundamental concepts of SAP PM 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Rather than trying to be a detailed guide to Plant Maintenance, a comprehensive reference book, or a source of answers to complex problems, Stengl tries to teach the fundamental concepts of SAP PM.

A very basic introductory book that demystifies the PM module. Aimed at the newcomer to SAP R/3, the book is a great guide. And a guide any new traveler must have to navigate the highways and back roads of SAP. It works best as a supplement to a SAP-PM course, but lacks the depth of a resource book.

In Chapter 4 - "Objects in R/3 PM", the authors do a good job of explaining the relationship of Functional Locations, Equipment, PM Assemblies, and Materials. Chapter 5 attempts to tackle breakdown and corrective maintenance, having worked as a Maintenance Planner, my first reaction was humor. In a perfect world, the roles of Maintenance Planner, Maintenance Technician, and Maintenance Controller would be this structured and defined. In the real world things are not so black and white.

Buy the book if you are new to SAP PM. It is a nice entry point. If you are approaching the Plant Maintenance with prior SAP experience then I recommend skimming the chapters in a bookshop before buying online.

So much of what is commonplace today was once considered impossible, or at least wishful thinking. There's just no getting around the fact that technology always has, and always will be, very cool. But technology isn't only cool; it's also very smart. At an increasing rate, people are turning their homes into state-of-the-art machines, complete with more switches, sensors, and actuators than you can shake a stick at. Whether you want to equip your home with motion detectors for added security, install computer-controlled lights for optimum convenience, or even mount an in-home web cam or two purely for entertainment, the world is now your oyster. Ah, but like anything highly technical, creating a smart home is typically easier said than done. Thankfully, Smart Home Hacks takes the guesswork out of the process. Through a seemingly unending array of valuable tips, tools, and techniques, Smart Home Hacks explains in clear detail how to use Mac, Windows, or Linux to achieve the automated home of your dreams. In no time, you'll learn how to turn a loose collection of sensors and switches into a well-automated and well-functioning home no matter what your technical level may be. Smart Home Hacks covers a litany of stand-alone and integrated smart home solutions designed to enhance safety, comfort, and convenience in new and existing homes. Kitchens, bedrooms, home offices, living rooms, and even bathrooms are all candidates for smart automation and therefore are all addressed in Smart Home Hacks. Editorial Review:

In the world of Unix operating systems, the various BSDs come with a long heritage of high-quality software and well-designed solutions, making them a favorite OS of a wide range of users. Among budget-minded users who adopted BSD early on to developers of some of today's largest Internet sites, the popularity of BSD systems continues to grow. If you use the BSD operating system, then you know that the secret of its success is not just in its price tag: practical, reliable, extraordinarily stable and flexible, BSD also offers plenty of fertile ground for creative, time-saving tweaks and tricks, and yes, even the chance to have some fun. "Fun?" you ask. Perhaps "fun" wasn't covered in the manual that taught you to install BSD and administer it effectively. But BSD Hacks, the latest in O'Reilly's popular Hacks series, offers a unique set of practical tips, tricks, tools--and even fun--for administrators and power users of BSD systems. BSD Hacks takes a creative approach to saving time and getting more done, with fewer resources. You'll take advantage of the tools and concepts that make the world's top Unix users more productive. Rather than spending hours with a dry technical document learning what switches go with a command, you'll learn concrete, practical uses for that command. The book begins with hacks to customize the user environment. You'll learn how to be more productive in the command line, timesaving tips for setting user-defaults, how to automate long commands, and save long sessions for later review. Other hacks in the book are grouped in the following areas:
  • Customizing the User Environment
  • Dealing with Files and Filesystems
  • The Boot and Login Environments
  • Backing Up
  • Networking Hacks
  • Securing the System
  • Going Beyond the Basics
  • Keeping Up-to-Date
  • Grokking BSD
If you want more than your average BSD user--you want to explore and experiment, unearth shortcuts, create useful tools, and come up with fun things to try on your own--BSD Hacks is a must-have. This book will turn regular users into power users and system administrators into super system administrators.

Are you a user or system administrator that needs to get the most out of Mac networking with Tiger Server? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Charles Edge, has done an outstanding job of writing a cool book that will help you tap the unused potential of your server.

Edge, begins by describing the concepts and terminology of basic network communications. Then, the author takes a look at what requirements are needed to run Tiger Server. Next, the author covers the management utilities that are used in maintaining and working with Tiger server. He also covers the various services that the Tiger X Server can offer to administrators to help in managing networks. The author continues by covering the concepts required to build a good backup plan for any organization. This unique black book will guide networking professionals and those wanting to set up a server through all the aspects of the new Mac Tiger Server including understanding the Apple network, managing network access, and network protocols such as TCP/IP AppleTalk, and the OSI model.

It covers Web-based administration, open directory and managed preferences, protocols for routing, switching and Web services. The book is jam-packed with hundreds of "how-to" tips to ensure that servers are set up correctly and they operate as efficiently as possible. Absolutely Perfect - Great Tutorial & Fun Reading 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Even though the Apple Airport choice is not the cheapest choice, it is the easiest to set up ... but like most people, you are worried about leaving any holes for your neighbors or the guy in a car on the street to ride your bandwidth or worse.

"AirPort and Mac Wireless Networks For Dummies" covers nearly ever setup choice in not only helping you get set up but also what each of the security choices (yes, no, WEP, Multicast, etc, etc ..) means and why or why not to choose that choice.

It's written (as all the Dummies books) by a "normal" person for "normal" people. The Apple Mac setup wizard (unlike Pc ones) included with your purchase of the Airport is actually useful but there are some extra choices in the menus that are explained in greater detail and much clearer here.

There are also simple instructions for those who want to add a router and share a USB printer.

And how to extend the distance of your Airport with additional airports ... and several great chapters explaining the difference between the regular Airport, the Airport Express and how to set it up to stream music or when you go out on the road.

This book explains exactly what it promises and sets out step by step so everything is crystal clear.

It's detailed without giving you too much info and never with jargon that's confusing.

After you get your Airport, buy this book. Your setup will take 15 minutes but you will sleep soundly knowing all your bases are covered.

Editorial Review:

Share printers, play games online, and see how to find a strong signal

Here's an AirPort that won't make you wait! This cool technology makes wireless networking a snap, and with this book, even an adult can do it. You'll see how to set up your network with Mac OS(r) X, add home entertainment toys, take it on the road, and even (sorry!) keep in touch with the office from almost anywhere.

Discover how to:
* Add AirPort to any OS X Mac
* Connect your network to the Internet
* Extend your AirPort network's range
* Show movies and post photos over your network
* Protect your AirPort network from intruders
