Good resource 4 out of 5 stars.

This book may not be the best book available to get you up & running with expression web quickly, but it has been a valuable resource for me. It has a good index for finging topics quickly, and the explanations of how to do things in Expression Web are fairly simple.

I was a dummy for buying this 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I really was hoping that I could cobble together an actual website after reading this, but no. As another reviewer said, it's a mix of the extremely simple and the very complex. There's no in between for someone like me who has created websites in Front Page and other such applications and would like to to the same in Expressions Web. Alas, there is no bridge from one to the other in this book.

Maybe, after I go out an buy another book that tells me how to use the application I can go back to this one and cull some good tips out of some of the chapters on CSS. I thought that the Dummies series was supposed to have that entry-level book, but I thought wrong.

Editorial Review:

Expression Web is Microsoft's newest tool for creating and maintaining dynamic Web sites. This FrontPage replacement offers all the simple "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" tools for creating a Web site along with some pumped up new features for working with Cascading Style Sheets and other design options. Microsoft Expression Web For Dummies arrives in time for early adopters to get a feel for how to build an attractive Web site. Author Linda Hefferman teams up with longtime FrontPage For Dummies author Asha Dornfest to show the easy way for first-time Web designers, FrontPage vets, or users of other Web design tools how to get results from Expression Web.

“There’s definitely more to this book than just how to use Expression Web. The chapter on tag properties not only clearly explains Expression Web’s Tag Properties task pane, but it also alleviates some of the mystery behind the use of tags in HTML. This is a great book for all users of Expression Web!”

Good content but horrible graphics 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My level of web development is pretty basic so I bought this book to help me migrate from using FrontPage to Web Expression. I found the chapters to be well laid out and full of step by step examples. It was useful to go to the publisher's website to get copies of the files used in the examples. However, I found the graphics (screen shots) in the book to be very frustrating. First of all they are too small. I often needed to get out a magnifying glass to see the details that the author was trying to demonstrate. Second, the examples are in black and white with a lot of grey shadings obscuring important text in the examples.

Editorial Review:

Microsoft Expression Web offers a powerful array of visual tools for creating great looking sites while fully supporting Web-based standards. Expression Web makes it easy for designers to quickly design cool sites with tools that feel familiar. Thanks to Expression Web's underlying standards, the files can then be passed to developers who can code the site in the development tools they prefer. This back and forth without designers having to touch the code unless they want to makes this a powerful program. In Expression Web 2, Microsoft has added support for PHP backed sites and made it easy to work with PHP. Other new features include: Silverlight support and new editing capabilities for Flash SWF and Windows Media files. In addition Expression Web 2 now provides ASP.NET AJAX server controls that enable users to quickly create web pages that include a rich user experience with responsive and familiar user interface (UI) elements.
