Editorial Review:

Whether you're a new photographer or an experienced pro, this book will guide you through the labyrinth of options and choices you face from the moment you see a photo opportunity to the time you share your final results. And it will help you minimize the time needed to fix your mistakes along the way.

Through step-by-step procedures based on years of experience, professional photographer Ken Milburn describes a complete workflow sequence that begins with essential equipment and preparation, takes you through detailed editing techniques, and ends with your finished images looking the way you want, ready to be shown to the world.

This completely revised edition of Milburn's original bestseller teaches you everything you need to do before, during, and after the editing process.

  • Be prepared with the right equipment
  • Get the basic shots right
  • Organize your photos and find the gems
  • Make reversible adjustments
  • Refine your images with care
  • Use special effects cautiously and tastefully
  • Publish and share your images effectively

You'll also learn advanced techniques with Photoshop CS2 and Photoshop Elements, though this isn' t a typical Photoshop how-to book. Milburn's workflow strategy ensures that high-production jobs are done professionally with a minimum of frustration. With Digital Photography: Expert Techniques, you'll become a better (and more profitable) photographer.

Complete Guide to Digital Photography - my opinion 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

While I like this book, and it does include a ton of useful information on various aspects of digital photography, I also have some criticisms. First, if you are not using Photoshop (CTS or Elements), this book will be of little value to you. Two-thirds (2/3) of the book is focused on techniques using Photoshop. Second, I am not a fan of the "every section is a short lesson or tutorial" approach. This often does not allow for in depth coverage of specific topics and can make it difficult to find specific topics. Finally, the CD/ROM included with the book is supposed to be a Tutorial, but is really a PowerPoint of selected chapters + some additional resources. It does not include photographs that are included in the book with before/after focus, which would be better. Overall, I think this book is good for someone who is making the transition from film to digital and/or someone who owns Photoshop and wants to learn more about how to use it.

Editorial Review:

In 2003, digital camera sales should explode following a 35 percent increase in 2002. Here, Rick Sammon covers all the steps in the digital photographic process. Sammon begins with basic advice for those new to photography. Experienced film shooters should enjoy his ample coverage of Photoshop and digital image techniques. And in a bonus section, Sammon offers advanced tips such as taking glamour shots, producing e-books, and setting up a home studio. The book asks questions such as "How do I select a digital camera? How do I store my images? What are the first things I should do when using Photoshop?" Its approach of "learning to see and see to learn" uses pairs of images, software screen shots, and the best photographs from his own vast library. The 107 lessons take the reader through each topic in friendly, concise steps.

Although the information in the book was good, I think the format imposed a limitation on the quantity of information given. I found myself asking for more most of the time. There really isn't enough unique information in the book.

BASIC Digital Printmaking 1 out of 5 stars.
50 of 83 people found this review helpful.

BASIC Digital Printmaking -That should be the title of this book. Perhaps for the amateur photographer who is unfamiliar with basic digital processes. There is so much more that can be done, missed completely by this book.
The book is filled with cheezy Photoshop effects equal to those "star" filters back in the 70's. cheezy, cheezy, cheezy...

Terrific Digital Printmaking Book 5 out of 5 stars.
44 of 46 people found this review helpful.

While searching out another photography book, I stumbled upon this one and bought it on a whim. What a revelation! I am totally thrilled with the book, the authors' writing, and the info - both aesthetic and concrete - inside. I've had several print b/w darkrooms - bathroom affairs that I've loved - but no longer have the space. I really have missed the print-making experience. Thus Creative Digital Printmaking opened new and exciting doors to me. Even better, it clearly explained how to handcolor digiprints, something I'd done with my b/w images, but never imagined I could do with a digital print.
The book's instructions and explanations are masterful - clear and concise, yet full of exciting techniques. While the book takes the reader on interesting creative journeys, Airey also focuses on the concrete, such as how to calibrate a monitor and the best way to scan a negative or photograph. The combination works. So do the excellent photographic examples. If you have the urge to make digital prints that last and ones that resonate with and excite viewers, this book will guide you on your way. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Editorial Review:

This guide discusses up-to-date technical information on the best computers, monitors, scanners, printers, drivers, CD writers, etc. Learn how to use Photoshop filters, create duotones and tritones, saturate colors and hand-color digital prints. Editorial Review:

"This is the magnum opus on digital printing and the book to read before color calibrating your monitor or wondering about differences in pigmented and dye-based inks. With little in the way of “how-to,” the book focuses more on why and showcases eloquent photographs, including a heartbreakingly beautiful portrait of Marilyn Monroe, a naked World War II bomber tail gunner, and the inevitable “Emperor’s New Clothes” work. Equally heartbreaking for far different reasons is Henry Wilhelm’s essay “A History of Permanence” that includes a section called “The Totally Lost Kodacolor Era” that will leave you stunned by the corporate callousness that’s described. This book not only deserves to be on the bookshelf of anybody who cares about photography, it deserves to be read." -- Joe Farace, Shutterbug

Most of us know him as one member of the band Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, but what you may not know is that at the same time Graham Nash was rocking the world, he was also pursuing a parallel career in photography and digital imaging. Nash Editions—the world’s premier fine-art digital printmaking studio, which Graham co-founded with R. Mac Holbert—represents the pinnacle of those efforts. This book uses thought-provoking essays and glorious artwork to sum up not only Nash Editions’ achievements but also the state of fine-art digital printmaking. After a brief history of printmaking, you’ll reach the heart of the book: an essay by Holbert on the genesis of Nash Editions and fine-art digital printing (which details the studio's interactions with major artists like David Hockney); an essay by MoMA consultant Henry Wilhelm (which includes a technical comparison of traditionally and digitally prepared prints); and commentary from Nash Editions artists. The book’s more than 100 illustrations include Nash Editions artwork, photos of artists in the studio, images of the machines used in digital printing, and illustrations of the proofing process.

An excellent introduction 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is the best I have seen for providing a succinct but comprehensive overview of digital photography methods and equipment for the beginner. It is easy to find what you want to learn about and copiously illustrated. Because it is just published, the equipment and technique information is up to date. The author's writing style is "just right" for conveying needed and useful information without overwhelming you with nuances. It is a perfect supplement to your camera's manual and it is only $7.95! I am going to look into more of Rob Sheppard's books on photography.

Editorial Review:

This is exactly what photographers venturing into the digital world for the first time have been looking for: an easy-to-follow, well-illustrated manual that shows them how to take great photographs. PCPhoto founding editor Rob Sheppard is the perfect guide, and this revised and updated volume is the beginner’s must-have book. In simple language, Sheppard explains the advantages of digital and covers the most important new technology (such as smile and blink recognition, image stabilization, higher megapixel sensors, and more). He offers invaluable information on shooting techniques, cameras, printers, and accessories; and expertly unravels the confusion over formats and file sizes, lens conversion factors, media cards, downloading pictures, and the basics of getting a good print. This is simply indispensable for any digital camera or inkjet printer owner.

Julie is the author of Digital Photography for Dummies, and she really knows her stuff. If you're beyond the dummy stage and want to learn more, this is the place to start.

Has so much potential 3 out of 5 stars.

This book does have great information! There is no doubt about that. If you are a beginnner to digital, this would not be a bad book to start with.

With that said, I wish the book had been set up better. It is all black and white which doesn't work well when you are trying to see the difference between various settings. In the middle of the book is a colored section with the example photos in full color, but flipping to that all the time is a true pain in the bum!

I did return this book back to Amazon due to my disappointment.

For THE BEST book on producing high quality images, I would recommend Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson.

Editorial Review:

Produce the kind of images that would otherwise demand a professional photographer or darkroom—or both. Through a series of tutorial projects, author Julie Adair King shows readers how to light shots, choose the right camera settings, use camera accessories and photographic software, and much more. You’ll learn step-by-step to use your existing digital camera for professional results. Set up a home studio, create a 360-degree panoramic image, learn low light and action photography, work in black and white, and adopt many other professional techniques.

Thoughtful Book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

People are generally aware about how facts can be distorted and misrepresented in the text and art media but tend to be less familiar with how easily photographs can be altered for the purposes of deception. In fact, many people give too much credibility to photographs because they assume that photographs always present scenes realistically. Mr. Brugioni shows not only how easily photographs are altered to distort the truth, he also conveys an idea of how widespread the practice of photo manipulation is in the modern media. I recommend this book strongly for people who are interested in media ethics or want to better understand the role of images in communication by governments, advertisers, and news organizations.

Editorial Review:

From the earliest days of the art form, when multiple exposures provided "evidence" of the spirit world, to today's computer-enhanced digital doctoring, photography has been fertile ground for fakery. Photo Fakery is the first book on the history of all types of photographic fakery and manipulation and shows how to detect these increasingly common practices.

Dino Brugioni, formerly one of the CIA's senior photo interpreters, presents hundreds of photographs that were contrived or altered, often succeeding greatly in their fakery by playing a part in history. Brugioni explains clearly, for the non-photographer, how these deceptions were accomplished and how to spot them. He also explores the benefits and dangers of doctored photos and the many problems raised for the legal profession. Profusely illustrated with examples never before seen by the general public, Photo Fakery is for anyone who wants to be a savvy media observer.

Missed my target 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I really thought the book would be more geared to professional photographers and workflow, etc. with regard to digital photos. Much more space was spent on website building, which I would have expected from a website book, not a book titled as a digital photographer's guide. Did I get $30 worth of information? Probably, but I would have liked more information on digital workflow, file management, professional lab tips, etc. as a professional photographer making the move from film to digital.

Editorial Review:

If you've ever been overwhelmed by the complexities of optimizing images for output, this results-oriented guide will clear everything up. Photo Finish: The Digital Photographer's Guide to Printing, Showing, and Selling Images shows you how to attain the best possible output for any medium. Digital imaging experts Jon Canfield and Tim Grey combine practical technical information with inspiring examples to teach you how to: get consistently great prints, mount and frame your work, create compelling photo slideshows, build attention-grabbing photo websites, get your work shown in exhibitions and galleries, and sell your images online. While other books focus on one aspect of output, this comprehensive guide covers all the ways you can share your images.
