Not Worth the money, but still pretty good 3 out of 5 stars.

I've been in a fight w/ Apple and Peachpit over this 'new' version of DVDSP4.
I'm an Apple cert. instructor for this and other ProApps. When I started reading the new book I found the same mistakes from version 3 had been copied over to version 4.

Granted, the new compressor app is great but nowhere does it explain the new features of DVDSP4 like support for external video, VTS editing and the whole HD support. I was told by Apple and Peachpit that this version of the book was intended to be an 'revision' of the old book; however, the general advertising of this book says 'Fully Update' instead of 'Fully Revised'... a bit misleading to the people who thought this version would help instruct students on how to best use the new features. We'll have to wait.

Editorial Review:

Now the best-selling book on DVD Studio Pro is even better. Updated for DVD Studio Pro 4.2, this Apple-certified book uses striking, real-world footage (including the HD documentary One-Six-Right) to build four complete DVDs. This revised edition covers integration with Final Cut Pro 6, Motion 3, and Compressor 3, as well as the new SD-to-HD workflow. Each chapter presents a lesson in an aspect of DVD creation and finishing, with hands-on projects for you to complete as you go. After learning how to storyboard your DVD and plan its interactions, you’ll set chapter markers, create stories, build still and motion menus, and add overlays and subtitles. You’ll also learn to work with multiple audio tracks and camera angles, create smart buttons and custom transitions, professionally encode audio and video files, and create useful scripts.

not for beginners 1 out of 5 stars.

This book is very dissapointing. Sure, this book is full of information, but does not know how to teach. This book is not completely written in step by step method. Before you actually start touch your project, you are fed up with information. I even found a couple of mistakes in earlier chapter. DVD comes with this book, but this DVD is not a lesson project like Apple Pro Training Series. Not useful.
If you are beginner and start studying DVD Studio Pro 4, don't by this book! You're going to waste your money. Buy the one from Apple Pro Training Series, which is much better, easy to understand.

Editorial Review:

With recent advances in technology, the exciting realms of digital editing and DVD authoring are now within reach of most graphics professionals. Until now, editing and rendering animations to fit on VHS and compressing digital images for delivery meant sacrificing quality. But with Apple Final Cut Pro 3, DVD Studio Pro, and the practical guidance found in this book, designers and animators can edit and deliver their creations with excellent results. Written for graphics professionals, animators, video artists, and users of Final Cut Pro and other popular video packages (iMovie, iDVD, Premiere), the Final Cut Pro 3 and DVD Studio Pro Handbook provides hands-on practice for the entire digital editing process. The book is broken into two main parts. Part One provides an in depth look at FCP and basic cinematography and editing concepts. It includes a detailed review of non-linear digital video editing (NLDVE), outlines the technical specifications for DVD, and provides a comprehensive overview of Final Cut Pro 3. From there the book delves into the process of editing and delivering media productions. Using raw video files from the book?s companion DVD, users work through every step of the editing process, from importing and editing media, to audio techniques, effects, outputting FCP data, and exporting to DVD. In Part Two, users learn how to use the core features of DVD Studio Pro, such as creating compressed media, importing streaming media, designing still and motion based menus, adding fully functional interactivity, and integrating subtitles.

Editorial Review:

If you are new to both DVD authoring in general and DVD Studio Pro in particular, the 17 chapters in this book are the road map you need. Every page is loaded with information, tips, screen shots, and tutorials designed to walk you through the process of creating a DVD step by step. Starting with basic discussions of different digital formats and the audio and video encoding processes; to the rundown of the DVD Studio Pro interface and the best methods for setting up a project; to building menus, scripts, and importing graphics; Peachpit Press's DVD Studio Pro Visual QuickPro Guide thoroughly covers the process of DVD authoring.

Most important, this book doesn't end with the basics. The final section, consisting of four chapters, details how to create a 16:9 formatted disc, multiple language tracks, adding subtitles, scripting, and creating hybrid DVDs. The clear and concise text and graphics make this book a pleasure to work through, and the supple paper and binding help it stay flat on your desk while working with it. Although no CD-ROM (or DVD) is included, there is an accompanying Web site for downloading examples cited in the book, and even a bonus project not listed in the book.

Peachpit's DVD Studio Pro Visual QuickPro Guide is the perfect companion to Apple's professional-grade DVD authoring package. Authoring a professional and polished DVD can be an elusive goal, especially for the beginning DVD creator. Learning to use a tool like Apple's DVD Studio Pro with this QuickPro Guide, however, is possibly the fastest and easiest way to climb the hardest part of the learning curve. --Mike Caputo

rushed to market 1 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Anybody could have written this book by working their way through the menus. They went out of their way to make this book thick, but there's nothing in it that an experienced Mac user couldn't figure out in an hour or two.
What they DON'T tell you:
-How to write scripts.
-How to use "non-simple" hi-lites and overlays.
-how to do anything except make a pretty straight-forward chapter by chapter DVD
I use the Flash Bible and the Final Cut Pro Bible all the time. They're great, and really go in depth to teach you how to do the complex things professionals typically do with these tools. However, for the DVD Studio Pro Bible, these authors only describe the menus, and then fill up the rest of the book with useless interviews and commentary/promotions from third parties.
Big disappointment. I'd recommend another book, but I blew my money on this one and can't afford another, and feel guilty about selling a useless book to someone else.
My only thought is that DVD Studio Pro 1.5 is so new, that the authors didn't have time to do anything with the software except read the manual.
