Editorial Review:

This is the first book to explain the SyncML spec and reference implementations in-depth. The authors explain how to integrate SyncML into mobile devices as well as how to set up a synchronization server which runs SyncML. An entire chapter is devoted to SyncML security. The major coverage is on the categories of SyncML, applications with a heavy emphasis on how to integrate mobile devices more tightly into corporate environments. SyncML was developed by the SyncML Consortium. Founding members include: IBM, Palm, Symbian, Nokia, Motorola, Ericsson and Lotus. It is supported by more than 650 key mobile and wireless leaders worldwide. Doug Heintzman, chairman of the SyncML Initiative says it best, "According to recent research from Cahners In-Stat, enterprise adoption of wireless data will grow exponentially over the next five years, with business users of wireless data skyrocketing to 39 million in 2006, from 6.6 million last year. We feel strongly that SyncML will be a key driver of that growth."

useful for any mobile development environment 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Salmre gives a very thorough exposition of the issues involved in writing applications for mobile devices. Where you face strong constraints in available memory, screen size and lack of a mouse. Plus network connectivity might be low bandwidth and intermittent.

His analysis is mostly within the context of .NET Compact Framework. You can regard this as a slimmed down .NET/C#, analogous to the way that J2ME/MIDP is a reduced J2SE.

Several chapters transcend the Compact Framework context and apply equally well to any development environment for mobile code. Like the chapter on using a state machine to model your application. Or the chapter on whether to use XML for data interchange. These chapters, like the rest of the book, have examples in C#. But the examples are short and clearly enough written to be understandable even if C# isn't your cup of tea. So you can use the examples as pseudocode, to port to other languages.

Actually, a closer scrutiny of the book reveals that most of it is written in a logical and general enough manner to be handy for any mobile development. The guidelines in most chapters can be thusly used.

Editorial Review:

Mobile devices have now become both much richer and much morewidespread - just look at the capabilities of the newest cell phones. At the sametime advances such as the .NET Compact Framework have opened the worldof application development for these devices to a much larger group ofpotential developers. Most of the material available to help traditionalapplication developers adapt to the very different world of mobile applications(including books) has focused on particular features sets of either thedevelopment tools or the devices. This is the first concise and practicalengineering book that lays out the principals and methods of good mobilesoftware design and uses concrete examples to back up the theaory. While thenumerous examples use the .NET Compact Framework, the general principalsdiscussed are valid for all mobile device development. This is a book which isdestined to be a well-respected guide to this growing field for years to come.

Wrox 'Beginning' books are always good for novices 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This review is going to be relatively short as all I would like to mention is the fact that this book, like other Wrox 'Beginning' books, are excellent for the novice who has no experience of a subject and wants to be lead through a subject.

Whilst it is always tempting to get the 'Professional' series books (such as Profesional WAP in this case) they assume a certain level of technical knowledge in related fields. They also sometimes contain too much knowledge to take in for someone who is new to a subject.

If you don't know what are doing with WAP get this book. It will get you started and allow you to later progress to other more advanced references once you've got a grounding.

If you already understand the subject and technologies involved (i.e. you are not a beginner) then - as the name would suggest - this isn't for you.

Editorial Review:

WAP, the Wireless Application Protocol, has managed to achieve fame and infamy in roughly equal parts as "the Internet on your mobile phone" - a claim that has not matched the experience of some early users. Used well, however, WAP has enormous potential: the attraction of using existing Internet infrastructure to deliver timely information and services to mobile devices is undeniable, and WAP offers exciting opportunities to those writing applications for it.

Beginning WAP provides a complete tutorial in the creation of WAP applications using the two languages defined for the purpose: WML, the Wireless Markup Language, and its companion WMLScript. Assuming no prior programming experience, we'll take you to the point where you're able to write a dynamic application that uses technologies such as ASP, XML, and XSLT to deliver the best possible user experience. The teaching style is step-by-step, with examples and explanations at every stage.

Editorial Review:

The term WarDriving originates from WarDialing, a term introduced to the public by Matthew Broderick's character, David Lightman, in the 1983 movie "WarGames." WarDialing is the practice of using a modem attached to a computer to dial an entire exchange of telephone numbers to locate any computers with modems attached to them. WarDriving employs the same concept, although it is updated to a more current technology; wireless networks. A WarDriver drives around a geographical location to determine all of the wireless access points in that area. Once these access points are discovered, a WarDriver uses a software program or Web site to map the results of his efforts. Based on these results, a statistical analysis is performed. This statistical analysis can be of one drive, one area, or a general overview of all wireless networks. WarDriving became more well known when the process was automated by Peter Shipley, a computer security consultant in Berkeley, California. During the fall of 2000, Shipley conducted an 18-month survey of wireless networks in Berkeley, California and reported his results at the annual DefCon hacker conference in July of 2001. This presentation, designed to raise awareness of the insecurity of wireless networks that were deployed at that time, laid the groundwork for the true WarDriver.

Editorial Review:

A number of different system concepts have become apparent in the broader context of embedded systems over the past few years. Whilst there are some differences between these, this book argues that in fact there is much they share in common, particularly the important notions of control, heterogenity, wireless communication, dynamics/ad hoc nature and cost.

The first part of the book covers cooperating object applications and the currently available application scenarios, such as control and automation, healthcare, and security and surveillance. The second part discusses paradigms for algorithms and interactions. The third part covers various types of vertical system functions, including data aggregation, resource management and time synchronization. The fourth part outlines system architecture and programming models, outlining all currently available architectural models and middleware approaches that can be used to abstract the complexity of cooperating object technology.

Finally, the book concludes with a discussion of the trends guiding current research and gives suggestions as to possible future developments and how various shortcomings in the technology can be overcome.

Deploying Voice over Wireless LANs

The definitive guide to planning, architecting, deploying, supporting, and creating Voice over Wireless LAN solutions

Recent advances make it possible to deliver high-quality voice and video communications over a wireless LAN (WLAN), replacing costly wired telephone and video surveillance systems and dramatically reducing support costs. However, today’s new voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) technologies require fundamentally different skills and techniques from those used in traditional voice and video systems. Now, there’s a complete guide to every facet of VoWLAN deployment: planning, design, installation, security, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Authored by wireless industry expert and leader Jim Geier, Deploying Voice over Wireless LANs draws on Geier’s extensive experience with real-world VoWLAN deployments. Geier brings together state-of-the-art insights into VoWLAN technologies, standards, products, services, implementation strategies, and much more.

Geier begins by introducing key components of today’s VoWLAN systems, including phones, client software, and voice encoders/decoders, as well as VoWLAN signaling essentials such as analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion and compression. Using examples drawn from actual enterprise settings, you’ll learn exactly how VoWLAN products integrate with existing IP infrastructure.

Next, he introduces crucial emerging 802.11 standards for effective VoWLAN deployment, including 802.11e quality of service (QoS) standards, 802.11r to minimize packet loss between access points, and 802.11k network discovery. He carefully reviews the security implications of VoWLAN voice, systematically covering both risks and countermeasures. Finally, Geier walks through implementation from start to finish, thoroughly covering analysis, design, installation, configuration, testing, and support.

Whatever your role in planning, delivering, managing, or creating wireless voice and video solutions, Deploying Voice over Wireless LANs is your most comprehensive, authoritative resource.

Jim Geier founded Wireless-Nets, Ltd., and serves as its principal consultant.
