Good introductory to the wireless world 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is mostly intended for non-technical people looking for a gentle introduction to the wireless/mobile devices world with a comprehensive survey of the existing technologies.

Confused by acronyms like GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, WAP, WI-FI, Bluetooth? This book will cover all that and much more. The author did a fine job by carefully and systematically explained the key wireless technologies in a high-level manner that appeals to a broader audience. Engineers and developers will be disappointed though by the lack of code samples, mobile development strategies and discussion of current mobile devices specifications

Editorial Review:

  • Describes mobile and wireless design techniques from the developer's perspective, offering in-depth analysis of the complete range of network technologies
  • Details development options for building Smart Client, Thin Client, and messaging applications as well as PIM (personal information management) and location-based services
  • The author is an experienced trainer who leads seminars and workshops worldwide for iAnywhere Solutions, a subsidiary of Sybase

Editorial Review:

AAA (Authentication, Authorization, Accounting) describes a framework for intelligently controlling access to network resources, enforcing policies, and providing the information necessary to bill for services.

AAA and Network Security for Mobile Access is an invaluable guide to the AAA concepts and framework, including its protocols Diameter and Radius.  The authors give an overview of established and emerging standards for the provision of secure network access for mobile users while providing the basic design concepts and motivations.

AAA and Network Security for Mobile Access:

  • Covers trust, i.e., authentication and security key management for fixed and mobile users, and various approaches to trust establishment.
  • Discusses public key infrastructures and provides practical tips on certificates management.
  • Introduces Diameter, a state-of-the-art AAA protocol designed to meet today’s reliability, security and robustness requirements, and examines Diameter-Mobile IP interactions.
  • Explains RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Services) and its latest extensions.
  • Details EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) in-depth, giving a protocol overview, and covering EAP-XXX authentication methods as well as use of EAP in 802 networks.
  • Describes IP mobility protocols including IP level mobility management, its security and optimizations, and latest IETF seamless mobility protocols.
  • Includes a chapter describing the details of Mobile IP and AAA interaction, illustrating Diameter Mobile IP applications and the process used in CDMA2000.
  • Contains a section on security and AAA issues to support roaming, discussing a variety of options for operator co-existence, including an overview of Liberty Alliance.

This text will provide researchers in academia and industry, network security engineers, managers, developers and planners, as well as graduate students, with an accessible explanation of the standards fundamental to secure mobile access.

Non-Beginner Advanced Reference 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This title is for the schooled j2me coder. The material is rather advanced, and the topics covered involve programming you will only really see on the corporate level. If you have just got that phone from xxxxx- service provider, don't start here if you want to write a quick app or game. Instead, go to J2ME The Complete Reference from Osborne/McGraw Hill- this will prove more beneficial. I was able to gain knowledge of what my future held with Java Micro if I chose the path, and this book put everything into perspective. Thanks IBM ;)
Hope this helps

Editorial Review:

Security is always a concern with any new technology. When we think security we typically think of stopping an attacker from breaking in or gaining access. However, based on the broad reach of wireless, stopping someone from passively listening is just as critical. Intrusion detection systems, firewalls, and forensics are just a few of the key areas that must be understood and applied to proactively solve the wireless problem. From short text messaging to war driving, Wireless Crime and Forensic Investigation explores all aspects of wireless technology, how it is used in daily life, and how it will be used in the future. The book provides a one-stop resource on the types of wireless crimes that are being committed and forensic investigation techniques for wireless devices and wireless networks. The author's straightforward and easy to read style seamlessly integrates the topics of wireless security and computer forensics. He provides a solid understanding of modern wireless technologies, wireless security techniques and wireless crime techniques, as well as conducting forensic analysis on wireless devices and networks. Each chapter, while part of a greater whole, can stand on its own, making researching wireless technologies, security, crime, or forensics easy. With a problem space as big and complex as wireless, proactive measures must be put in place, and put in place immediately. To protect your organization, you need to be well versed in the new technology sooner rather than later. You can pay now or you can pay later. Later always costs more. This book not only has all the information required to become proficient in wireless technology, but also provides the information required for conducting a forensic analysis in a wireless environment.

Visual Basic Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This books serves as a good tool to understanding how to use Microsoft Visual Basic.

Not worthy to buy 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was cheated by the looking of preface. However there are too many graphics with a little explanations. How can you understand programming language like that? I do not recommand anyone to buy this book.

Editorial Review:

Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 for Windows, Mobile, Web, and Office Applications: Complete is the first text of its kind to teach students the essentials of computer programming using the latest Visual Basic programming language, Visual Basic 2005. Nine chapters introduce topics such as designing a Visual Basic user interface, creating a windows application, variables and arithmetic operations, mobile applications using decision structures, loop structures, Web applications with ASP 2.0 and string manipulation, and Visual Studio tools for Office applications. Written in a straight-forward style, this text makes it easy for any novice programmer to understand the core capabilities and fundamental techniques for Visual Basic 2005.

Editorial Review:

Your First-Step into the World of Wireless Networks

  • No experience required!
  • Gain an understanding of wireless networking basics with this reader friendly guide
  • The first book anyone should read about wireless networks with step-by-step instruction
  • Learn from an author experienced in and known for writing to a generalist wireless audience with a clear, simple-to-understand style

As a basic introduction to wireless networking, Wireless Networks First-Step assumes that readers have no previous wireless experience. The book provides an overview of wireless networking, along with details of applicable standards and technologies. Newcomers to wireless technologies will find practical information along with an abundance of examples. Case studies throughout the chapters provide real-world implementation examples, presented in a non-technical fashion. Implementation details are discussed only to the extent that readers can identify what type of wireless network may be appropriate for their needs.

Wireless Networks First-Step, written by Jim Geier, begins with a basic introduction to wireless networks and an explanation of radio wave communications. It then reviews different types of wireless networks including WPANs (wireless personal area networks), WLANs (wireless local area networks), wireless MANs (metropolitan area networks), and WWANs (wireless wide area networks). The final section covers security threats to wireless networks, and solutions to combat these threats.
