Definitely Introductory 1 out of 5 stars.

The book is definitely introductory. It's basically teaching you how to program in VB. I was expecting something a "little more advanced" since it is Mobile applications. This book is like programming 101. The book contains instructions on how to do If/Then statements, Loops, etc. It's extremely basic. If you are a mobility programmer such as myself, there are not a lot of books out there to give you reference information on Mobile applications. This one is not worth your time unless you are just beginning to learn how to program in VB .Net.

Editorial Review:

Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 for Windows and Mobile Applications: Introductory is the first text of its kind to teach students the essentials of computer programming using the latest Visual Basic programming language, Visual Basic 2005. Six chapters introduce topics such as designing a Visual Basic user interface, creating a windows application, variables and arithmetic operations, and mobile applications using decision structures. Written in a straight-forward style, this text makes it easy for any novice programmer to understand the core capabilities and fundamental techniques for Visual Basic 2005.

Very good introduction to J2ME CLDC/MIDP 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I am commenting on the First Edition of this book.

I own two books on introductory J2ME development in a CLDC/MIDP environment: this is the better of the two. Mr. Knudsen writes well (no silly jokes or other distracting nonsense), and covers the core material one needs to begin programming MIDlets.

Chapter 12 in the first edition is extremely useful, wherein the practical use of message digests on the client side are illustrated.

All in all, a good book for the bookshelf, and one I recommend to friends interested in J2ME CLDC/MIDP programming.

Editorial Review:

Although Java is incredibly popular, the standard edition of Java is way too big and bulky to build applications for wireless devices such as PDAs and phones. Thus, Sun has released Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME). J2ME has the potential to be as revolutionary in the wireless space as Java has been in the server space.

Wireless Java: Developing with J2ME, Second Edition is updated to include coverage of the next version of programs for mobile Java devices. MIDP 2.0 contains many exciting new features, such as sound HTTPS support, lots of user interface API enhancements, a Game API, and much more. Also, author Jonathan Knudsen makes clear what material is new so readers can still use the book for MIDP 1.0/CLDC 1.0.

Comprehensive and clear, a good book 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Disclaimer: I know the guy who wrote the forward, although I don't think in any way this has influenced my review of this book.

I'm not a wireless hacker, although I've dabbled some in examining networks and some of the software in the book. That said, I think I learned quite a bit by reading this book. I didn't know what to expect with "Wardriving & Wireless Penetration Testing", but what I found was a focused, well prepared book with clear examples. Now, this book is very heavy on network discovery and mapping and not as complete on wireless attacks, although this topic does get coverage in a full chapter and parts of others.

What I like about the book is that it's comprehensive without being exhaustive. It covers WiFi hacking from Windows and Linux, which you would expect, and also from OS X (not so common) and also from, very pleasantly, handheld devices. The software covered is mainly using Kismet/Kismac and the NetStumbler family of software, which is not unexpected. These are premier tools and offer everything you would want. Several minor tools are also discussed.

Various attacks covered include breaking the security mechanisms of WEP, WPA and LEAP, not surprisingly, and how to commit MITM attacks. In all of these, the instructions are clear and straightforward with clear illustrations.

Lest you think this book is all about software, there's good coverage of hardware, both wireless cards and adapters as well as antennas. Also, some GPS software and its integration with wireless mapping efforts is also covered in detail. Another surprise is the coverage of the OpenWRT software kit for the WRT54G device, which can easily be loaded into a functional, dedicated wireless pentest and attack tool. The authors provide valuable tips and insights along the way. A short "bonus" chapter on wireless video device hacking is also included. Appendix B covers driver static analysis and testing, which is becoming a hot topic right now in vulnerability research.

Screenshots, examples, and images were generally well done. A handful of Linux-specific screenshots (ie for the kernel configuration) were poorly reproduced, unfortunately.

While I'm not an expert at wireless (either the security protocols, the auth protocols, or the physics) I didn't spot any obvious mistakes in their background material.

I found "Wardriving & Wireless Penetration Testing" to be well written and full of useful information, all clearly and well presented. The authors have prepared a good, timely book on the subject, and cover the topic in full, sharing insights and tips along the way.

Editorial Review:

WarDriving and Wireless Penetration Testing brings together the premiere wireless penetration testers to outline how successful penetration testing of wireless networks is accomplished, as well as how to defend against these attacks. As wireless networking continues to spread in corporate and government use, security experts need to become familiar with the methodologies, tools, and tactics used by both penetration testers and attackers to compromise wireless networks and what they can do to both accomplish their jobs as penetration testers and how to protect networks from sophisticated attackers. WarDriving and Wireless Penetration Testing brings together the premiere wireless penetration testers to outline how successful penetration testing of wireless networks is accomplished, as well as how to defend against these attacks.

"Security is a process, not a product, and computer security is everyone's responsibility. You wouldn't leave the backdoor of your home or business open to intruders, and your computer merits the same prudence. Even Dodge City had a Wyatt Earp to keep order if things got out of hand. In the wild world of the Internet, there is no sheriff. Lacking serious depth 2 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Its clear from reading through the book that the author has some insight into MIDP2.0 games programming and the business of getting them running well and published, however this book ultimately fails to convey this information to the user.
The author starts out saying that he's not going to spend much time explaining game programming because there are many books on the subject, yet wastes precious time explaining MIDP itself - a topic for which there are considerable numbers of books available. For a book on MIDP game programming, the book actually wastes a considerable number of pages not actually building games. By the time it actually gets to the Game API (Chapter 9 on page 137/334) nearly half the book is over. Once we finish with the one "solid" chapter on the Game API all one will gain is a sampling of information about the general operation of the Game API and layers but it is explained in such little detail that you'll end up having to buy another book to get details about it.

One of the biggest letdowns of this book once it DOES start talking about the Game API occurs when attempting to discuss working with worlds larger than the handset size - something fundamental to most games and crucial to understand for building performant games. The Author covers this entire topic in 2 paragraphs and doesn't even provide a line of code to explain it.

So misguided is parts of the book that it wastes 10 pages trying to discuss JBUilder Mobile Edition and 4 discussing Brew. These wouldn't be such outrageous wastes if the author had actually been more forthcoming in the chapter on the GameAPI in actually telling and showing people what they needed to know in order to use the Game API effectively.

Didn't actually learn anything more about the Game API than I already knew just reading the Sun website. But hey, I do know some more information about the PNG file format history. Look elsewhere. As a professional programmer in this space I found this book to be greatly disappointing.

    Editorial Review:

This book features step-by-step examples in major game programming areas such as graphics, GUI, networking, tiles, animation, and sound. Additionally, the book goes into some detail about the business model of wireless game distribution.

An essential reference for authors and implementers 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a remarkable book, and by far the most authoritative guide available for the SMIL languages. It serves a broad audience, and combines a readable style with complete expertise in the subject matter.

For authors, the book provides an easy-to-understand explanation of the language principles and syntax. Many useful examples illustrate the features, and provide useful authoring templates. Bulterman and Rutledge's experience with multimedia authors and authoring comes through in the many tips and hints for addressing real-world issues and avoiding potential pitfalls. All examples are provided online as well, along with demos and other resources.

For the serious student or implementer, the book provides detailed explanations of the underlying models for layout, timing and animation. These sections benefit from the combined experience of the book's authors as leading members of the W3C standards group that developed the SMIL languages. Their understanding of the details is clearly beyond that of most other authors on this subject.

The book design itself is interesting and fun. Graphics in the margins mark the chapters, with key chapters featuring flipbook-like graphic "animations". It has a comfortable layout and organization and an excellent index. If I have a complaint, it is that I do not find the graphics summarizing syntax features to be very intuitive. Fortunately, the text and examples provide sufficient syntax reference.

Authors of web multimedia as well as academics and professionals integrating or implementing SMIL language features will find this an invaluable addition to their reference bookshelf - I strongly recommend it.

    Editorial Review:

The SMIL 3.0 language is the W3C’s standard language for web-based multimedia. This book provides a comprehensive guide to all of SMIL’s elements and attributes for all versions, from the complete SMIL Language profile to SMIL Tiny. Driven by dozens of examples and illustrated code fragments, every aspect of SMIL is treated in this book.

Starting with essential background on XML and the streaming media infrastructure, this book considers recent features – such as smilText and smilState – as well as the structuring, layout and timing aspects required to master SMIL. In addition, the book describes advanced SMIL functionality, including transitions, animation and embedded metadata, all from an application-oriented perspective.
