Through concise, on-the-job solutions to common problems, Windows Server Cookbook for Windows Server 2003 & Windows 2000 is certain to save you hours of time searching for answers. From there, you'll be directed to the exact trouble-shooting recipe they need. As the newest title in O'Reilly's popular Cookbook series, this book covers a wide range of issues that you are likely to face in your daily management of the Windows Server operating system. This includes how to deal with:
  • files
  • event logs
  • DNS
  • DHCP
  • security
  • the registry
  • backup/restore
One of the book's key benefits is the presentation of solutions in three different recipe formats. Depending on preference, you can solve most problems with the graphical user interface, the command line, or by using scripts. Where appropriate, all three solutions are presented for each recipe in this book. Each recipe also includes a detailed discussion that explains how and why it works. Windows Server Cookbook for Windows Server 2003 & Windows 2000 is written for all levels of system administrators on Windows servers. If you're a relatively new user with only a rudimentary understanding of the job, the book can open your eyes to the many possibilities that await. And if you're an advanced user, it can serve as a useful reference and memory-jogger. Download the code examples from this book. Broad coverage - poor in the details 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Definitively one of the worst technical publications I've ever bought.

This book will be useful only if you want to gain a general understanding on how netscreen firewalls work, but under no circumstance this should be considered a technical reference, or configuration guide.

HUGE lack of examples, and those present are extremely simplistic. Just driving through clicking on the NetscreenOS interface is not an example. The book is also plagued of grammatical inconsistencies.

After having read each one of its 743 pages I'm still on the same place I was before starting.

If you need a little more detail on what's behind the NetScreen & SSG architecture, use the Reference Guide from Juniper (more than 2,000 pages of rich examples, scenarios, and explanations... and the best... FREE!!!). That's exactly what I'm doing now.

To the publishers: thank you for making me post my first review ever.

Editorial Review:

Configuring Juniper Networks NetScreen & SSG Firewalls is the only complete reference to this family of products. It covers all of the newly released features of the product line as highlighted by Juniper Networks, including: Complete Coverage of Integrated Intrusion Prevention Step-by-Step Instructions for Protecting Against Worms, Trojans, Spyware, and Malware Advanced Information on Virtualization Technologies And coverage of important new updates: Deep inspection firewall, Centralized- policy-based management, Built-in high availability features, & Rapid deployment features.

Truly the Best Damn Windows Server 2003 Book Period 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 27 people found this review helpful.

From the author: If you're involved in managing a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 network, you need this book. You don't have time to waste reading through arcane tidbits of interesting but useless information. You certainly don't have time to waste reading a book that's been morphed from other versions of Windows. You need something built from the ground up that addresses exactly what you need to know about Windows Server 2003. Period.

The Best Damn Windows Server 2003 Book Period is a comprehensive compilation of everything you need to know about Windows Server 2003. Each chapter stands on its own as a focused reference for specific server information and tasks. We included only the relevant, need-to-know information. Each chapter has screen shots and step-by-step instructions covering critical server tasks as well as pertinent background information. It won't teach you how to convert binary to decimal for IP addressing, but it will show you how to set up DHCP scopes and implement IPv6 on your network. It doesn't explain what a router does, it shows you how to configure routers for secure and efficient network traffic management. From disk and storage management to securing wireless access, this book gets right to the heart of the topics you need to effectively manage your Windows Server 2003 network.

Get this book, keep it handy and refer to it often. Sleep better at night knowing your network is in good hands - yours.

Editorial Review:

In keeping with past trends, full migration to this latest Microsoft Server Operating System will begin in earnest 12 months after its release, in mid-to-late 2004. This book hits the market just as large enterprises begin the process of moving from Windows 2000 Server to Windows Server 2003. The title says everything you need to know about this book. No other book on the market combines this breadth and depth of coverage with the kind of product expertise and quality standard expected from Syngress. Every aspect of Planning, Installing, Configuring and Troubleshooting a Windows Server 2003 network is distilled and documented, with plenty of examples and illustrations. And unlike its competition, this is a book that was written from the ground up for Windows Server 2003. It doesn't rely on hackneyed computer geek stereotypes; its tone, coverage and examples reflect the realities of TODAY'S enterprise network professional.

Editorial Review:

Hardening Linux by James Turnbull belongs on the shelf of anyone who installs and maintains Linux servers.

— Ray Lodato, Slashdot Contributor

I felt like I learned more about Linux reading this book than I've learned during the last year at work.

— Lasse Koskela, JavaRanch Sheriff

I think Hardening Linux may be the best example I've seen of a practical book on the subject.

— Anomaly - G. Wade Johnson

I was a bit surprised when I scanned the table of contents. The first thought in my head was, 'hey, this has everything in it.' And it does.

— Joe Topjian, Adminspotting.net

"Hardening" is the process of protecting a system and its applications against unknown threats. Hardening Linux identifies many of the risks of running Linux hosts and applications and provides practical examples and methods to minimize those risks. The book is written for Linux/UNIX administrators who do not necessarily have in-depth knowledge of security but need to know how to secure their networks.

In this book, you'll learn how to secure:

  • The base operating system and firewall with iptables
  • Connections to your hosts
  • Fie systems and files
  • Email servers
  • IMAP and POP servers
  • FTP servers

A quick reference of the procedures discussed in each chapter are summarized in Appendix C.

Editorial Review:

When "Practical Unix Security" was first published more than a decade ago, it became an instant classic. Crammed with information about host security, it saved many a Unix system administrator from disaster. The second edition added much-needed Internet security coverage and doubled the size of the original volume. The third edition is a comprehensive update of this very popular book - a companion for the Unix/Linux system administrator who needs to secure his or her organization's system, networks, and web presence in an increasingly hostile world.

Focusing on the four most popular Unix variants today--Solaris, Mac OS X, Linux, and FreeBSD--this book contains new information on PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules), LDAP, SMB/Samba, anti-theft technologies, embedded systems, wireless and laptop issues, forensics, intrusion detection, chroot jails, telephone scanners and firewalls, virtual and cryptographic filesystems, WebNFS, kernel security levels, outsourcing, legal issues, new Internet protocols and cryptographic algorithms, and much more.

"Practical Unix & Internet Security" consists of six parts:

Computer security basics: introduction to security problems and solutions, Unix history and lineage, and the importance of security policies as a basic element of system security.

Security building blocks: fundamentals of Unix passwords, users, groups, the Unix filesystem, cryptography, physical security, and personnel security.

Network security: a detailed look at modem and dialup security, TCP/IP, securing individual network services, Sun's RPC, various host and network authentication systems (e.g., NIS, NIS+, and Kerberos), NFS and other filesystems, and theimportance of secure programming.

Secure operations: keeping up to date in today's changing security world, backups, defending against attacks, performing integrity management, and auditing.

Handling security incidents: discovering a break-in, dealing with programmed threats and denial of service attacks, and legal aspects of computer security.

Appendixes: a comprehensive security checklist and a detailed bibliography of paper and electronic references for further reading and research.

Packed with 1000 pages of helpful text, scripts, checklists, tips, and warnings, this third edition remains the definitive reference for Unix administrators and anyone who cares about protecting their systems and data from today's threats.
