One of the best technical books published in 2007 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Disclaimer: I wrote the foreword for this book, so obviously I am biased. However, I am not financially compensated for this book's success.

In the foreword I note that Linux Firewalls is a "great book." As a FreeBSD user, Linux Firewalls is good enough to make me consider using Linux in certain circumstances! Mike's book is exceptionally clear, organized, concise, and actionable. You should be able to read it and implement everything you find by following his examples. You will not only learn tools and techniques, but you will be able to appreciate Mike's keen defensive insights.

The majority of the world's digital security professionals focus on defense, because offense is left to the bad guys, police, and military. I welcome books like Linux Firewalls that bring real defensive tools and techniques to the masses in a form that can be digested and deployed for minimum cost and effort.

One of the main reasons Linux Firewalls is a great book is that Mike Rash is an excellent writer. I've read (or tried to read) plenty of books that seemed to offer helpful content, but the author had no clue how to deliver that content in a readable manner. Linux Firewalls makes learning network security an enjoyable experience. Mike is exceptionally detail-oriented (see the RST vs RST ACK issue on p 63 and elsewhere) and he often cites sources and additional references. Linux Firewalls very nicely integrates sample network traffic to make numerous points; Ch 11 has several great examples. The sections on Fwsnort even improved my understanding of Snort itself.

The bottom line is that if you are a user of non-Microsoft operating systems (Linux, BSD, etc.) and you want to know how Linux can help defend your network, you will enjoy reading Linux Firewalls.

Editorial Review:

OpenBSD's stateful packet filter, PF, offers an amazing feature set and support across the major BSD platforms. Like most firewall software though, unlocking PF's full potential takes a good teacher. Peter N.M. Hansteen's PF website and conference tutorials have helped thousands of users build the networks they need using PF. The Book of PF is the product of Hansteen's knowledge and experience, teaching good practices as well as bare facts and software options. Throughout the book, Hansteen emphasizes the importance of staying in control by having a written network specification, using macros to make rule sets more readable, and performing rigid testing when loading in new rules.

Today's system administrators face increasing challenges in the quest for network quality, and The Book of PF can help by demystifying the tools of modern *BSD network defense. But, perhaps more importantly, because we know you like to tinker, The Book of PF tackles a broad range of topics that will stimulate your mind and pad your resume, including how to:

  • Create rule sets for all kinds of network traffic, whether it is crossing a simple home LAN, hiding behind NAT, traversing DMZs, or spanning bridges
  • Use PF to create a wireless access point, and lock it down tight with authpf and special access restrictions
  • Maximize availability by using redirection rules for load balancing and CARP for failover
  • Use tables for proactive defense against would-be attackers and spammers
  • Set up queues and traffic shaping with ALTQ, so your network stays responsive
  • Master your logs with monitoring and visualization, because you can never be too paranoid

The Book of PF is written for BSD enthusiasts and network admins at any level of expertise. With more and more services placing high demands on bandwidth and increasing hostility coming from the Internet at-large, you can never be too skilled with PF.

Broad coverage - poor in the details 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Definitively one of the worst technical publications I've ever bought.

This book will be useful only if you want to gain a general understanding on how netscreen firewalls work, but under no circumstance this should be considered a technical reference, or configuration guide.

HUGE lack of examples, and those present are extremely simplistic. Just driving through clicking on the NetscreenOS interface is not an example. The book is also plagued of grammatical inconsistencies.

After having read each one of its 743 pages I'm still on the same place I was before starting.

If you need a little more detail on what's behind the NetScreen & SSG architecture, use the Reference Guide from Juniper (more than 2,000 pages of rich examples, scenarios, and explanations... and the best... FREE!!!). That's exactly what I'm doing now.

To the publishers: thank you for making me post my first review ever.

Editorial Review:

Configuring Juniper Networks NetScreen & SSG Firewalls is the only complete reference to this family of products. It covers all of the newly released features of the product line as highlighted by Juniper Networks, including: Complete Coverage of Integrated Intrusion Prevention Step-by-Step Instructions for Protecting Against Worms, Trojans, Spyware, and Malware Advanced Information on Virtualization Technologies And coverage of important new updates: Deep inspection firewall, Centralized- policy-based management, Built-in high availability features, & Rapid deployment features.

Editorial Review:

"While Nokia is perhaps most recognized for its leadership in the mobile phone market, they have successfully demonstrated their knowledge of the Internet security appliance market and its customers requirements."
--Chris Christiansen, Vice President, Internet Infrastructure and Security Software, IDC.

Syngress has a long history of publishing market-leading books for system administrators and security professionals on commercial security products, particularly Firewall and Virtual Private Network (VPN) appliances from Cisco, Check Point, Juniper, SonicWall, and Nokia (see related titles for sales histories). The Nokia Firewall, VPN, and IPSO Configuration Guide will be the only book on the market covering the all-new Nokia Firewall/VPN Appliance suite. Nokia Firewall/VPN appliances are designed to protect and extend the network perimeter.

According to IDC research, Nokia Firewall/VPN Appliances hold the #3 worldwide market-share position in this space behind Cisco and Juniper/NetScreen. IDC estimated the total Firewall/VPN market at $6 billion in 2007, and Nokia owns 6.6% of this market. Nokia's primary customers for security appliances are Mid-size to Large enterprises who need site-to-site connectivity and Mid-size to Large enterprises who need remote access connectivity through enterprise-deployed mobile devices. Nokia appliances for this market are priced form $1,000 for the simplest devices (Nokia IP60) up to $60,0000 for large enterprise- and service-provider class devices (like the Nokia IP2450 released in Q4 2007). While the feature set of such a broad product range obviously varies greatly, all of the appliances run on the same operating system: Nokia IPSO (IPSO refers to Ipsilon Networks, a company specializing in IP switching acquired by Nokia in 1997. The definition of the acronym has little to no meaning for customers.) As a result of this common operating system across the product line, The Nokia Firewall, VPN, and IPSO Configuration Guide will be an essential reference to users of any of these products. Users manage the Nokia IPSO (which is a Linux variant, specifically designed for these appliances) through a Web interface called Nokia Network Voyager or via a powerful Command Line Interface (CLI). Coverage within the book becomes increasingly complex relative to the product line.

The Nokia Firewall, VPN, and IPSO Configuration Guide and companion Web site will provide seasoned network administrators and security professionals with the in-depth coverage and step-by-step walkthroughs they require to properly secure their network perimeters and ensure safe connectivity for remote users. The book contains special chapters devoted to mastering the complex Nokia IPSO command line, as well as tips and tricks for taking advantage of the new "ease of use" features in the Nokia Network Voyager Web interface. In addition, the companion Web site offers downloadable video walkthroughs on various installation and troubleshooting tips from the authors.

* Only book on the market covering Nokia Firewall/VPN appliances, which hold 6.6% of a $6 billion market
* Companion website offers video walkthroughs on various installation and troubleshooting tips from the authors
* Special chapters detail mastering the complex Nokia IPSO command line, as well as tips and tricks for taking advantage of the new "ease of use" features in the Nokia Network Voyager Web interface

Almost perfect.... 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because I needed to learn how to use the PIX Firewall for my company. My experience with configuring firewalls (Or any Cisco device) is extremely limited, so I needed a basic book that explains how to configure a PIX firewall (what the commands do, how traffic flows, and the consequences of your actions when configuring a firewall)

This book has helped me greatly in understanding how the PIX firewall works. After reading through it and using it as a study aid for my job, it has given me the knowledge to know what I need to look for when configuring my PIX Firewall.

Unfortunately, this book has many grammatical errors that leave you confused as to what the author is trying to describe. Also, alot of the errors make you question the validity and integrity of the author's knowledge on some of the configuration examples.
Example: The author has diagrams that lay out the network design of certain scenarios, using the diagram to explain what a company's public IP address is. Unfortunately no where on the diagram does it show the public IP address. In fact, in some examples, the IP address is completely different from what the author is describing.

In summary...
If you can except that there are going to be grammatical errors and possibly even conflicting examples described in the book. Then this book will help you greatly.

After reading this book and using it to take notes and actually 'study' for it, it has helped me greatly in understanding how to configure my PIX.

Personally.... I wish there was a book that simply layed out the commands needed to configure your PIX firewall a specific way. I'd rather get the firewall configured now, and then understand how it works later.

Editorial Review:

Secure your mission-critical networks with the #1 leading firewall and this definitive guide. Featuring in-depth coverage of installation, configuration, and maintenance this book will show you how to protect your data from unauthorized users and hackers.

Editorial Review:

With more and more small-office and home computers being left connected to the Internet at all times, the owners of those machines are being faced with problems that used to confront only big operations. The authors of Firewalls for Dummies spread the message: everyone with a cable modem, data satellite dish, or DSL connection needs a firewall now. Thankfully, though, these guys go beyond merely showing how to set up turnkey personal firewall products--too many Dummies books explain the obvious and the generally intuitive--and reveal how to set up the sorts of firewalls that protect sizable networks. By understanding these techniques, small operators can plan for growth and improve their level of protection. What's more, this book provides a serious explanation of corporate firewall products and techniques that's appropriate for people who build and maintain big systems.

The authors generally steer away from showing how to configure specific firewall products, though a few of the biggies--Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server, BlackICE, ZoneAlarm, and Check Point FireWall-1--get comparative overview coverage. Mostly, they favor more general firewall configuration strategies and techniques. These they explain with a lot of prose, a fair number of conceptual diagrams, and tables that sum up permission rules. This is a worthwhile read. --David Wall

Topics covered: Firewalls and the ways they can be deployed to prevent unauthorized access to computers and networks without interfering with the protected users' ability to get out to the Internet. A summary of networking fundamentals as they apply to firewalls is followed by coverage of network address translation (NAT), demilitarized zones (DMZs) as created by multiple or even single computers, and filtering policies.
