Writing useless books for dummies 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is the real specialty the authors of this book have mastered...
I am astonished at how many positive reviews this horrible, stinky title has received ... how many friends do this guys have? In fact this has got to be one of the worst tech book I have ever read, a total waste of money and paper.
My advice is , avoid this book, and any other book form the same authors, like plague! You will learn NOTHING from them.
The authors go on and on babbling about how unsecure wireless networks are, and are nonetheless unable to clearly indicate you any technique to take advantage or to protect form this weakness. All you get (apart from the boring and repetitive author's ruminations) are a few screenshots of NetStumbler (hey man, I can see by myself what it looks like, teach me how to use it instead ..), one screenshot of Kismet running on a linux xterm and a list of some of its command options (come on do you think that a beginner would ever be able to figure out how to use a open source tool like Kismet all by himself?)
Ah we also get a little advertisement for a couple of non-free tools like AiroPeek ... like a beginner should spend money on that? And , wait, there is no tutorial or intro on those tools as well. Just the usual couple of screenshots to make the book look good if you flip through it at the bookstore.
Seriously, I know this is hard to believe, but this pathetic excuse for a book is just a series of boring trivialities
For example ... did you ever think about the fact that installing a non-authorized, non-encrypted access point in your office network might actually be a security risk? I am sure you didn't, but thanks to this beautiful book you know, as the author spends pages and pages rambling and babbling about this absurd topic!
Years ago the "For Dummies" series used to be the right choice if you needed a humorous, tutorial-like but solid intro to a 'foreign' technology, but now the title is not a joke anymore.
"Hacking Wireless Networks for Dummies".. true to its title!

Discover how to:

  • Perform ethical hacks without compromising a system
  • Combat denial of service and WEP attacks
  • Understand how invaders think
  • Recognize the effects of different hacks
  • Protect against war drivers and rogue devices

I've always been a big fan of Jim Geier's books, but this one is the best one he's produced yet. It's excruciatingly detailed (which I think is great), yet provides thorough analogies to help the novice understand the concepts. The organization of the book is excellent. I highly recommend this book to anyone studying for the CWSP certification (www.cwnp.com).

Editorial Review:

The popularity of wireless networking has grown exponentially over the past few years, despite a general downward trend in the telecommunications industry. More and more computers and users worldwide communicate via radio waves every day, cutting the tethers of the cabled network both at home and at work.

Wireless technology changes not only the way we talk to our devices, but also what we ask them to do. With greater flexibility, broader range, and increased mobility, wireless networks let us live, work, and think differently. Wireless networks also open up a vast range of tasty new hack possibilities, from fine-tuning network frequencies to hot-rodding handhelds.

The second edition of "Wireless Hacks," co-authored by Rob Flickenger and Roger Weeks, brings readers more of the practical tips and tricks that made the first edition a runaway hit, selling nearly 30,000 copies. Completely revised and updated, this version includes over 30 brand new hacks, major overhauls of over 30 more, and timely adjustments and touchups to dozens of other hacks introduced in the first edition. From passive network scanning to aligning long-distance antennas, beefing up wireless network security, and beyond, "Wireless Hacks" answers real-life networking needs with direct solutions.

Flickenger and Weeks both have extensive experience in systems and network administration, and share a passion for making wireless more broadly available. The authors include detailed coverage for important new changes in specifications and in hardware and software, and they delve deep into cellular and Bluetooth technologies.

Whether you need your wireless network to extend to the edge of yourdesk, fit into your backpack, or cross county lines, the proven techniques in "Wireless Hacks" will show you how to get the coverage and functionality you're looking for.

What *else* can you do with wireless technology? 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

So what do you do once you have your wireless router plugged in and your laptop connected to the internet via the airwaves? What more *can* you do, and what if you want to venture beyond the basics? A lot of that is covered pretty well in the book Wireless Network Hacks & Mods For Dummies by Danny Briere and Pat Hurley.

Contents:
Part 1 - Making Your World Wireless: Wireless Inside Everything!; Wireless Network Basics; Wireless LAN Infrastructure; Wi-Fi and Broadband Connections
Part 2 - Boosting Performance on Your Wireless Network: Combining Wired and Wireless Networks; Better Living Through Network Monitoring; Boosting Signal Strength Where You Need It; Staying Safe in the Wireless World

Index

It seemed like (at least to me) getting connected wirelessly used to be more art than science. Now it's pretty easy, and it doesn't take much to make a connection anywhere you happen to be these days. But there's a lot more you can do with wireless technology that perhaps you haven't thought of. For instance, the authors talk about GPS units and how they can connect wirelessly to services to enable you to track your car's location. Given I have a son with diabetes, that's a possibility I plan on exploring so I can sleep better at night. Or let's say that you are a music lover and you want to listen to your tunes all over the house. Using wireless networking, you could set up a wireless jukebox and listen anywhere. Perhaps you're the altruistic type and you just want to share your connectivity with others who need it. There's a *lot* of information in here on how best to do that, both from a security and a technical perspective. Add all that to some very understandable writing on the underlying technologies behind wireless (like 802.11a/b/g, WEP/WPA/WPA2, etc.), and you have a useful and solid book.

Any time I read a title that talks about hacks and mods, I realize that not everything will be applicable or even interesting to me. But if I can come away with a handful of ideas and tips to use and explore, it's worth the read. This book meets that criteria...

Cisco Wireless LAN Security covers the spectrum of WLAN security, including protocols and specifications, vulnerabilities and threats, and, especially, deployment patterns and design guidelines. With a unique combination of theory and practice, this book addresses fundamental wireless concepts, such as WEP, and innovations, such as EAP, switching, and management. Each chapter includes detailed illustrations, checklists, design templates, and other resources. You will also find generic wireless deployment patterns based on real-world customer installations and functional examples of architecture, design, and best practices.

Whether you currently design, configure, implement, and maintain WLANs or simply want to explore wireless security issues, Cisco Wireless LAN Security has everything you need to understand how to create a seamlessly secure, impenetrable 802.11 network.

This book is part of the Networking Technology Series from Cisco Press¿ which offers networking professionals valuable information for constructing efficient networks, understanding new technologies, and building successful careers.

Best book on this subject available 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In contrast to many books available on wireless security that address mostly GSM, WLAN, and Bluetooth security, this book targets a different audience. It is an excellent survey on the ongoing security research for wireless ad-hoc networks. The previously mentioned technologies are briefly covered in the introduction, then the book discusses future forms of wireless networks that are formed spontaneously, forward traffic in a multi-hop manner, etc.

As such networks have very different trust assumptions and adversary models, naturally, the security solutions differ and this is why a very active research community has created a lot of interesting security solutions.

This book is a must read for everyone who has started exploring the world of MANETs, Mesh Networks, Vehicular Networks, etc. and wonders how to provide security and prevent selfish behavior in these networks. It will safe its readers hours of literature review as the presented material has previously been cluttered over tons of conference proceedings or journal articles.

The book also makes an excellent addition for any graduate class on this subject, especially as the authors provide presentation materials on the accompanying website.

Last but not least, the authors are among the leading experts in this field, so they know what they are talking about. A definitive plus not found in every book ;-)

Editorial Review:

The current rate of deployment of wireless networks - whether cellular, LAN, Bluetooth, or sensor - is remarkable. Wireless systems are vulnerable to many kinds of attack, and the security features of fixed-line systems are not always applicable in the wireless arena. With ever-increasing amounts of data being carried on wireless networks, security has become a major concern and an area of great commercial importance. This book presents the key features of wireless networks and discusses various techniques for ensuring secure communication. In particular, techniques for dealing with hacking and other forms of attack will be dealt with, as will cooperation in multi-hop and ad hoc networks. It is suitable for senior undergraduates and graduate students of electrical engineering and computer science. Given the breadth of coverage, it will also appeal to researchers and practitioners in the wireless industry.

Falls short as a wireless security reference 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Wireless networking is the hottest technological innovation of the past few years, but the unpleasant fact is that security is its greatest weakness. In a crowded market of computer security titles, a niche exists for a book that lays out wireless security problems and couples them with solutions.

Unfortunately, this is not that book. While well written, the book is thin on security matters; security is only first dealt with in chapter six. That coverage is interrupted by five chapters on building wireless networks. Discussion of security doesn't resume until chapter twelve.

Despite its title, the book is more about setting up, configuring, and managing wireless networks, with occasional digressions into security issues. Only about 35 pages of this 320-page book directly deal with wireless security. The book would make a good introduction for designing wireless networks, but it falls short as a security reference.

Editorial Review:

  • Provides a step-by-step approach for planning and implementing a wireless LAN based on 802.11 Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) technology
  • Authors are Wi-Fi security experts who are able to address the firestorm of concerns about security for 802.11b networks
  • Offers a clear perspective of interoperability with related wireless standards like 802.11a, HomeRF, and Bluetooth
  • Explains how to achieve the same performance as a wired Ethernet connection and deliver flexibility and high speed
