Editorial Review:

When software development teams move to agile methods, experienced project managers often struggle—doubtful about the new approach and uncertain about their new roles and responsibilities. In this book, two long-time certified Project Management Professionals (PMPRs) and Scrum trainers have built a bridge to this dynamic new paradigm. They show experienced project managers how to successfully transition to agile by refocusing on facilitation and collaboration, not “command and control.”

The authors begin by explaining how agile works: how it differs from traditional “plan-driven” methodologies, the benefits it promises, and the real-world results it delivers. Next, they systematically map the Project Management Institute’s classic, methodology-independent techniques and terminology to agile practices. They cover both process and project lifecycles and carefully address vital issues ranging from scope and time to cost management and stakeholder communication. Finally, drawing on their own extensive personal experience, they put a human face on your personal transition to agile--covering the emotional challenges, personal values, and key leadership traits you’ll need to succeed.

Coverage includes

  • Relating the PMBOKR Guide ideals to agile practices: similarities, overlaps, and differences
  • Understanding the role and value of agile techniques such as iteration/release planning and retrospectives
  • Using agile techniques to systematically and continually reduce risk
  • Implementing quality assurance (QA) where it belongs: in analysis, design, defect prevention, and continuous improvement
  • Learning to trust your teams and listen for their discoveries
  • Procuring, purchasing, and contracting for software in agile, collaborative environments
  • Avoiding the common mistakes software teams make in transitioning to agile
  • Coordinating with project management offices and non-agile teams
  • “Selling” agile within your teams and throughout your organization

For every project manager who wants to become more agile.

Outstanding Reference and Companion to the PMBOK 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Using this book as a study guide, it is possible to pass the PMP exam. Using only Project Management in Practice and the PMBOK to study from, I easily passed the PMP exam the first time without joining one of the intensive prep classes. Nearly all the questions on the exam were covered in this book. All the PMI required areas of study are covered; Organization, Planning, Budgeting, Scheduling, Resourcing, Monitoring and Controlling, Evaluating and Terminating. The concepts of Earned Value and Critical Path Method are easily explained and examples given. Formulas and case studies are provided with each chapter. As a practicing Project Management Professional (PMP), I still refer to Project Management in Practice.

Editorial Review:

Following a computer program orientation, Core Concepts focuses on more than just concepts. It actually shows how to effectively do project management. The book is organized around the project management life cycle, mirroring the way a real-world project is completed. Readers will gain a better understanding of essential project management fundamentals as they learn the material they'll need to know for the Project Management Body of Knowledge certification program.

Excellent PMP Exam Prep Study Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is the best PMP Exam Prep study guide I have found. It is packed with useful information, targeted directly at passing the PMP Certification exam. The practice exam questions are excellent, the explanation of the answers well written, and a reference to the PMBOK is included with each question. The book includes a CD with a full PMP exam (many similar books charge extra for this) and the ability to download a second exam for no additional charge. The book is much less expensive than others that offer not nearly as much. As a PMP certified project manager and instructor of PMP exam prep courses, I recommend it highly.

Editorial Review:

A unique classroom-based approach for PMP exam preparation

This proven system for candidates wishing to certify their skills as Project Management Professionals delivers complete coverage of the PMP exam, hundreds of practice questions, and a CD-ROM that includes two electronic practice exams and an electronic copy of the book.

  • Reflects the 2005 revision of the exam
  • The only study guide to offer a classroom-based approach to exam preparation
  • Updated to reflect the new PMBK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) and references all answer explanations directly to the PMBK

Purpose: Project management templates 5 out of 5 stars.

The biggest part of managing a large project with deliverables is knowing the timing and details of your deliverables to make sure that all pieces are in place and planned for...time and resource wise. This book is a huge help in providing those pieces. Whether you use all the pieces or not it gives you the details you need to think through before you incorporate a deliverable and help you weigh how much detail and effort needs to be a part of it.

well-researched 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm a one-man database development shop at a nonprofit with a shoestring budget. Without the benefit of senior level programmers, I've had to learn most of my software engineering lessons the hard way- by experience.

I picked up this book seven years into the job, which in retrospect was about seven years too late. In some respects, this book repeats lessons that that have already become obvious through experience (e.g., software testing needs to be performed separately from development). But, this lends credibility to my judgment, and provides new insights substantiated by software engineering research studies. Non-technical management and funders are responsive to the hard figures I often find myself citing from this book. For example:

1) Programmers are 2.5 times more productive in a quiet office vs. a cubicle- so, I need to be allowed to work from home

2) The most efficient programmers are 10 times more productive than the least efficient programmers- really, you would think this would be obvious, but when work needs to be contracted, the low bidder is not necessarily the best choice over the long haul

Currently faced with my most substantial and challenging programming project yet, I'm essentially using this book as a cookbook to process. Upfront I was a bit overwhelmed with the scope of the project. Having finished the book, I have a well-defined process in place, am confident this will get done, and feel I am much more articulate describing the stages of software development to management and contracted vendors. Some presumably industry-standard strategies are proving invaluable- implementing a Top Ten Risk list to ensure that major barriers are addressed upfront rather than deferred, creating specific milestones, etc.

This book (or an equivalent) should absolutely be mandatory for anyone about to take on their first major software project. It is most useful because it reads like a cookbook- guiding you through all the phases of software development, one after the other.

Editorial Review:

The author of the classics "Code Complete" and "Rapid Development" throws a lifeline to the industry's huge and indispensable population of rookie managers and technical leads. This book is a roadmap to how an effective software project works--understandable even for those with limited project experience.

An absolute must have for Excel users of all levels. True magic! 5 out of 5 stars.

This isn't Excel, It's Magic! is a fantastic book. I thought I knew a lot about Excel; but I now realize how little I did know. It is hard to pick a favorite because there are so many great head spinning, jaw dropping tips & tricks.

The book is well written with easy to follow examples. It makes unlocking the power of Excel an amazing experience. 85 great topics ranging from using advance filters to using vba bookmarks. A must have for beginning and expert users everywhere.

Thanks for a great time saving book, Mr. Umlas. You are a true magician!!

Practical and Illustrative 4 out of 5 stars.

What a handy little book chuck full of hints, tips and techniques by Bob Umlas. Bob Umlas is a Microsoft MVP and has held that honor since 1995 for his dedication to various online groups

The book is organized into 6 categorizing chapters: Features, Formulas, Keyboard Shortcuts, Printing, Miscellaneous, and VBA. It contains 142 pages with 84 tricks, tips and manipulative techniques, some of which are quite useful.

Some of the techniques covered are ones that you probably learned at some point but have forgotten. Others will be old tricks applied differently that will give you a new perspective. Plus there are many advanced features that are explained to stretch your skills. What impresses me the most is the practicality of what is presented in the book. The majority of the techniques are useful hints that can be put into practice rather easily.

Good on principles, but practices could be more dev-related 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This book is a thoroughly enjoyable read, from the emphasis on principles, the excellent job navigating the difficult territory of the line between prescribed process and anarchy, and the stages a team goes through as it embraces an agile style of development. I even thought that the hypothetical story added a nice element of repetition to each section that helped drive home the main points.

The one thing I would've liked was for this book to get off the fence and decide to be software-related. Almost every example is software related (except for the basketball analogy that got beaten to death...), but it goes out of the way not to specify software practices because this is about arbitrary project management. The book's in the "Agile Software Development Series" and the author is primarily a software consultant. I'd prefer it stuck to software rather than trying to go for broader appeal because there were several practice areas where detail was elided on that basis and could've really helped make the practices more concrete.

Also, it would've been nice to have a little grid mapping up common-day software development methodologies like Scrum, XP, FDD, and DSDM against the practices in the book. I tried to do it in my head, but once you get past 5x5, it's something that should've been provided.
