Editorial Review:

When developers build software, they're able to keep track of all the different versions and all the components they use with software configuration management (SCM) systems. One of the more popular SCM products is Perforce.

Authored by Perforce's own VP of product technology, "Practical Perforce" is the ideal complement to the existing product manual, focusing less on the 'how" and more on the "why" and "when." The book is not only a helpful introduction to Perforce,

it's an enlightening resource for those already familiar with this versatile SCM product. Whether you're a programmer, product manager, or build engineer, you stand to benefit from the many insider tips and ideas presented in this convenient guide.

"Practical Perforce" is divided into two main parts. Part I offers a whirlwind technical tour, complete with careful descriptions of basic and advanced Perforce commands designed to give you a baseline knowledge. Part II describes the big picture-using Perforce in a collaborative software development. It outlines recommended best practices and quickly shows how to implement them with the Perforce operations introduced in Part I. Throughout the book, you'll learn how to maximize Perforce so it completes tasks like these in the most efficient manner possible:

Keep track of changes as you conduct concurrent parallel work on files

Log activity

Generate reports on who did what when

Compare, merge and branch files

Store files and file configurations

Restore lost bug fixes

Recognizing the pitfalls and practices of an SCM system like Perforce is absolutely essential to producing good software. Now, with "Practical Perforce," you have the edgeyou need to ensure success.

Not PMBOK 3rd Ed Aligned 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book last year when I started studying for the PMP. Buyer beware that this book is not based on the most recent PMBOK version and some of the information is incorrect. This book is OK for getting an idea of what the test may be like and the information covered, but it should not be used as an authoritative source of information. I even question if the the practice tests can be trusted since I have already found some of the answers to be wrong. At a minimum, get the latest PMBOK as well so you can see where there are differences.

Editorial Review:

Historically, all software projects have involved a certain degree of risk and pressure -- but many of the projects in today's chaotic business environment involve such intense pressure that they are referred to colloquially as "death-march" projects -- i.e., projects whose schedules are so compressed, and/or whose budgets, or resource (people) assignments are so constrained, that the only "obvious" way to succeed is for the entire team to work 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, with no vacations until the project is finished. While the corporate goal of such projects is to overcome impossible odds and achieve miracles, the personal goal of the project manager and team members often shrinks down to mere survival: keeping one's job, maintaining some semblance of a relationship with one's spouse and children, and avoiding a heart attack or ulcer. This new and thoroughly-updated edition of Ed Yourdon's book takes into account many of the changes that have taken place in the more than six years since the publication of the first edition.

Good book on PM in Technology 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you work on technology projects, you will pick up some good tips from this book. You will also learn a few general pronciples of project management. However, do not expect it to be compatible with the PMI Standard for project management.

Not as good as expected 2 out of 5 stars.

The condition of the book was new when I saw it on the item list, but acctually, it was not. There are many pages in this book have been marked and noted abviously. I'm so said that the seller was cheating me.

Editorial Review:

Great resource for leads, managers, and build masters 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

There really aren't too many books that cover the subject of SCM and this one does a very good job of overviewing all the issues. Although he does give examples and opinions on different tools and platforms, the book is not written for any particular one. I especially like the fact that he is coming from a developer's perspective in the sense that the need for SCM has been brought upon him, like most of us, and it's not something he initially persued. Things like source control directory structure, versioning, builds, build policies, etc. are issues that are eventually dealt with by tech leads and/or tech managers but few usually have any formal experience with it. Anyone who has been in a small or large development shop knows how critical these issues are to the entire development process.

I also bought Build Master by Vincent Maraia which is also an excellent book but I felt that his position has always been specifically a build master and the book dealt with very large build projects that had dedicated teams. In constrast, Berczuk and Appleton's book is more broad so that a lone developer/manager assigned to the daunting tasks of setting up SCM environments can achieve this and have a general guide for holding down the fort.

Editorial Review:

Stereotypes portray software engineers as a reckless lot, and stereotypes paint software configuration management (SCM) devotees as inflexible. Based on these impressions, it is no wonder that projects can be riddled with tension! The truth probably lies somewhere in between these stereotypes, and this book shows how proven SCM practices can foster a healthy team-oriented culture that produces better software. The authors show that workflow, when properly managed, can avert delays, morale problems, and cost overruns. A patterns approach (proven solutions to recurring problems) is outlined so that SCM can be easily applied and successfully leveraged in small to medium sized organizations. The patterns are presented with an emphasis on practicality. The results speak for themselves: improved processes and a motivated workforce that synergize to produce better quality software.

Editorial Review:

Developing a large-scale software system in C++ requires more than just a sound understanding of the logical design issues covered in most books on C++ programming. To be successful, you will also need a grasp of physical design concepts that, while closely tied to the technical aspects of development, include a dimension with which even expert software developers may have little or no experience. This is the definitive book for all C++ software professionals involved in large development efforts such as databases, operating systems, compilers, and frameworks. It is the first C++ book that actually demonstrates how to design large systems, and one of the few books on object-oriented design specifically geared to practical aspects of the C++ programming language. In this book, Lakos explains the process of decomposing large systems into physical (not inheritance) hierarchies of smaller, more manageable components. Such systems with their acyclic physical dependencies are fundamentally easier and more economical to maintain, test, and reuse than tightly interdependent systems. In addition to explaining the motivation for following good physical as well as logical design practices, Lakos provides you with a catalog of specific techniques designed to eliminate cyclic, compile-time, and link-time (physical) dependencies. He then extends these concepts from large to very large systems. The book concludes with a comprehensive top-down approach to the logical design of individual components. Appendices include a valuable design pattern "Protocol Hierarchy" designed to avoid fat interfaces while minimizing physical dependencies; the details of implementing an ANSI C compatible C++ procedural interface; and a complete specification for a suite of UNIX-like tools to extract and analyze physical dependencies. Practical design rules, guidelines, and principles are also collected in an appendix and indexed for quick reference. 0201633620B04062001

Good organization, beware of errors 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I agree with the review by Albert, that there are numerous errors. The coverage mentioned in the title page of every chapter, leaves out some important topics covered within.

I would recommend this book to be read after attending a Instructor-led Training course, reading the PMBOK once, and reading Rita's book. Having such background will help to know the errors immediately.

On the positive side, this book is a good approach to organize the knowledge areas and process in a logical - real life order. The ongoing Kitchen Heaven Store project example provides a welcome break and a real-life manifestation of concepts.

Add to this, the sample exams and end of chapter summaries. I'll rate this 4-star and a good value for the money spent.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

Managing Enterprise Projects Using Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 Second Edition, is an unprecedented learning guide and reference for project managers who use the Microsoft EPM platform. This edition covers Project Server and related SharePoint changes through the July 14, 2008 Infrastructure Update. Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office Project 2007 and Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 was not yet available at the time of this writing.
Our goal for this book is to provide a combination of training and reference manual; a vital learning tool to help you build on your knowledge of the stand-alone tool by mastering the Microsoft enterprise project management environment. Follow our best practices to success and heed our warnings to avoid the pitfalls.
We take a systematic approach to the topical ordering in this book, beginning with a Project Server 2007 overview in Modules 01 and 02. Module 03 teaches you how to use two new features in Project Server 2007: Proposals and Activity Plans. In Modules 04-07, you learn to use Project Professional 2007 to define, plan, baseline, and publish an enterprise project. Modules 08-10 take you through the project updating process from team member progress reporting in Project Web Access and in Outlook, through your acceptance of the updates into the enterprise project plan. Module 11 wraps up with analyzing project variance. In Modules 12-15, you learn how to set up personal options, how to use the features in the Project Workspace, and how to create Status Reports. Modules 16-18 cover viewing enterprise project information and teach you how to use Data Analysis.
Throughout each module, you get a generous amount of Notes, Warnings, and Best Practices. Notes call your attention to important additional information about a subject. Warnings help you avoid the most common problems experienced by others and Best Practices provide tips for using the tool based on our field experience.
With this book, we believe that you can become more effective at using Microsoft Enterprise Project Management tools. If you have questions about the book or are interested in our professional services, please contact us at our office. If you have questions about Microsoft Project or Project Server, contact us through the Microsoft public news groups.
