Quick overview 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Nutshell review - If you want a very fast, high level, quick, shallow, big picture overview of the CISSP exam then this will do. However, you will not pass the exam on this alone.

I had this strange feeling... 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I used the 'look inside' option at Amazon and tried 'cryptography'... Well... to my surprise, the first couple of pages felt like reading Shon Harris' "CISSP All-in-one Exam Guide". It was only a slightly condensed version of her book but the attempts at humor and light-heartedness were expanded. "Hmmmm...", I thought. Shon must have condensed her "All-in-one" and repackaged it as a "... for Dummies" product. But, then, I looked at the front page and I couldn't find her name there. She wasn't one of the 2 authors.

This is very interesting.

Great CISSP Study Guide - Much Better then the first !!! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

If you are thinking about taking the CISSP exam, I would highly recomend this book (and others as well). Think about it, why not read the book that is published by the ones who created & manage the test itself ? No brainer right ? This book is roughly 715 pages of reading and it is well put together. However, I stongly recomend that you also read the All-In-One CISSP by Shon Harris. You must keep in mind that the ISC CBK is written by multiple authors (each chapter is a different auther), so the melody of the book changes throughout. However, it is a great reference and should be included as your CISSP study guide.

Highly recomended !!

Editorial Review:

This officially sanctioned resource is the best and most up-to-date study guide available for those seeking CISSP certification. Offering a compendium of information security topics, the book is detailed enough to also serve as an authoritative resource for those executives or organizational managers seeking to maintain or improve security measures. The book is packaged with a CD-ROM, which includes sample exams that simulate the actual exam, providing the same number and types of questions with the same allotment of time. It even grades the exam, provides correct answers, and identifies areas where more study is needed.

Extremely poor: Author is busy defending himself 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Everyone, avoid buying this book. There are many other books out there.

As you can see on this page, one of the authors of this book tried to justify having made errors by saying other books have errors too. He also openly admitted having made contextual errors (which is extremely embarrassing) after being pointed out by one of his customers, but the author blasted him away and made no apology about selling incorrect data due to his ignorance and stupidity.

All-in-one as a study guide 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I just received an e-mail confirming I passed the test and I can say that this book is a really good overall reference. It has very good coverage of all the core domains that the CISSP exam covers and was practically my only study tool - definitely my only study book. I used the free exam questions at cccure.org (great reference) as well as some quick guides from that site (that are pretty much built off of the all-in-one and a couple of other books to provide quick reference).

I highly recommend this book (or the 4th edition which has just come out) to anyone considering taking the exam. While the exam is difficult, mastery of the subject matter is definitely possible with this guide and a bit of experience. The exam is very much concept-based, and by that I mean that you need to understand the concepts behind the core domains as oppsoed to just memorizing everything. Memorization is useful (and necessary) in a number of areas, but if you memorize without understanding the concepts there are plenty of questions that you can miss on the test. The exam really does a pretty good job of trying to draw on how well you understand the material. There are a number of people out there that state that the jokes or no good or there are gaps. First, it's not a comedy book. The style is meant to put the reader at ease so that the material can be more easily absorbed. Second, there are going to be gaps with any book because the exam is not written off of one. Plus, I tried reading the "official guide" a long time back. Dry, dry, dry, dry, dry. I couldn't force myself past 175 pages. And finally, there are a number of books that go into an absurd amount of detail. I think it's easy to get lost in that stuff. This one has good coverage without getting you lost in the weeds for an exam where that really isn't necessary. Overall I probably studied about 170 to 200 hours over a period of 3 to 4 months (but not every single day). Give yourself plenty of time to read and understand.

Also, the CD questions are a good way to test your comprehension. Use it. The end of the chapter questions are ok, but you should DEFINITELY use cccure.org to get a feel for how difficult questions will actually be and how they are worded on the test.

To anyone going for it I say good luck. It's not an easy test to take. As a frame of reference, I was able to complete it in about 4 hours - being really careful to read the questions well and also going back over the ones that I wasn't so sure about. It's grueling, but very doable.

Hope this helps.

ISSEP CBK 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This book is a must have book for preparation and study for the ISSEP exam as of October 23, 2005. This book also has good study questions for each chapter at the end of the book to guide you in testing your knowledge per chapter. The book also goes into additional details in some areas to provide more information to the security pactitioner. The author provides an e-mail address for errata in the book.

The down sides to the book are that none of the unclassified public documents are available on CD with the book and no electronic quiz program are included. There are reference lists at the end of each chapter showing the links to download the public documents.

Editorial Review:

The Official (ISC)2® Guide to the CISSP®-ISSEP® CBK® provides an inclusive analysis of all of the topics covered on the newly created CISSP-ISSEP Common Body of Knowledge. The first fully comprehensive guide to the CISSP-ISSEP CBK, this book promotes understanding of the four ISSEP domains: Information Systems Security Engineering (ISSE); Certification and Accreditation; Technical Management; and an Introduction to United States Government Information Assurance Regulations.

This volume explains ISSE by comparing it to a traditional Systems Engineering model, enabling you to see the correlation of how security fits into the design and development process for information systems. It also details key points of more than 50 U.S. government policies and procedures that need to be understood in order to understand the CBK and protect U.S. government information.

One of the best CISSP exam books 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I read it just after it was published and I think it's one of the best books to prepare for CISSP exam. I can't say it's the only study source to pass the exam, but definitely it was very helpful.

Decent CISSP guide but quizzes are too easy 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have just passed my CISSP exam, taken on Aug 2008. This guide was my sole reference book that I used and I also DID NOT attend the review seminar for CISSP. Having said that, I would not recommend it as your only source of CISSP reading material as it slightly outdated by now, as compared to some of the questions that I have encountered on the exam.

The quizzes listed on the book are also way too easy and nowhere near the trickery shown on the actual exam questions. For giggles and laughter, I actually visited the bookshop to review the 'Official ISC2 Guide to CISSP CBK' a couple days after taking the exam, and found out that the quiz questions listed in the book are worded similarly to the exam. I did not read through the chapters for that guide, so I could not make a sound comparison between the 2 books.

However, I could safely say that you should not just rely on one book and read the usual suspects of 'The All-In-One..', 'The Official Guide to CISSP CBK' and this book in your CISSP exam preparations.

Good luck!

Good Choice For Test Questions 4 out of 5 stars.

I used this book along with several other texts and practice exams to prepare for the exam. I also used the cccure website. Clement DuPuis runs the site and was the editor of this book which was a factor in my decision to buy. I passed the exam so I am happy with the end result.

Excellent CISSP Book and CDROM - Highly Recommended. 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Dear All, I recently completed my CISSP review studies, passed the exam, and completed the CISSP endorsement process. This is a very worth while endeavor and, as someone with many years of Internet security and risk management experience, I highly recommend the CISSP certification process for everyone. Reviewing the 10 common bodies of knowledge (CBK) has value for everyone in the IT business and I am very pleased to have taken the time to review the material and complete the exam. For my self-study review, I purchased four books via Amazon: (1) The CISSP Pre Guide - Gold Edition by Ronald L. Krutz and Russell Dean Vines, (2) All-In-One CISSP Exam Guide, Third Edition by Shon Harris, (3) Official (ISC)2 Guide to the CISSP Exam by Susan Hansche, John Berti and Chris Hare, and (4) CISSP Certified Information Security Professional Training Guide by Roberta Bragg. Each of these texts came with a CDROM for practicing test questions on a Windows PC and covered the 10 CISSP CBKs. I found the first three CISSP books in my list to be helpful. Of those three, the most helpful was The CISSP Prep Guide - Gold Edition by Krutz and Vines. This book is concise, well written, and easy to read. The CDROM is excellent and nearly error free. The text is well thought out and informative. I also recommend Shon Harris' book, with reservation. I found it hard to get to the required CISSP information, at times, due to the attempts at humor in the book. The CDROM of sample test questions were also very good, albeit not as rich in features as the book by Krutz and Vines. The Official (ISC)2 Guide to the CISSP Exam by Susan Hansche, John Berti and Chris Hare was a disappointment. This book read just like a cut-and-paste from the Internet and other documents; and the companion CDROM was full of errors and omissions. After a while I stopped using this text book and focused on the first two. I am sorry to say that CISSP Certified Information Security Professional Training Guide by Roberta Bragg was a complete disappointment from every perspective. The CDROM example tests were riddled with errors and omissions. For those interested in my self-study technique, I took each book and studied one (sometimes two) of each of the CBK chapters each day. Then, I repeated the same process for each of the other books, except for the book by Bragg, which was dropped for reasons mentioned. I took all the sample tests repeatedly, before and after and then again. I must have practiced between 4000-5000 sample questions. It was challenging and enjoyable. In summary, I highly recommend Krutz and Vines and also recommend, with reservation, the book by Shon Harris. No single book can cover the entire CBK of the CISSP. The more you study, the better. Best of luck on your CISSP studies. The CISSP is certainly an experience that will improve your knowledge of the field of IT security and benefit the profession at-large.

Editorial Review:

  • The Gold Edition has been updated to include CISSP bonus questions never before published and advanced question and answer tutorial.
  • The CD-ROM contains 660 questions of which 360 have never before been available electronically.
  • All questions have been designed with Boson, the premier interactive test engine for technical books in the industry.
  • Authors are experts in the security certification field and have particular expertise in the CISSP Exam.

Editorial Review:

The Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) rating is difficult to earn and rare in the marketplace, which means you're a valuable commodity if you've proven your skills by passing the exam. The CISSP Prep Guide, one of only a handful of books on its subject, does a good job of giving readers a feel for the scope of the test and the style of its questions. It's ideal for use either as a preliminary survey of the CISSP subject areas (the test's publisher and the authors of this book call them "domains") for relative newcomers to computer security, or as a pure study guide to help more experienced professionals zero in on the weak spots in their knowledge. Don't expect to do well on the CISSP exam having only read this book. You'll want to have some practical experience and some specialized reading under your belt.

Ronald Krutz and Russell Vines are good writers and fine teachers; they explain the wide-ranging CISSP domains (which have to do with everything from cryptographic algorithms to fire-suppression techniques to legal principles). They take care to explain potentially unfamiliar terms--there's a good glossary in the back of this book--and employ conceptual diagrams well. However, the answer keys for the sample questions that conclude each chapter aren't annotated and some readers will wish for more references to specialized sources. --David Wall

Topics covered: The subjects covered by the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) exam published by the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, including cryptography, access control, security policy, legal matters, and the physical safety of information, equipment, and people.
