ZUNE for Dummy's 4 out of 5 stars.

ZUNE for Dummy's is pretty good about pointing out the feature's ZUNE products have. However in this day and age I have already discovered most of the info by reading reviews on the net. I'd suggest buy the book or spend time searching for the data.

zune for dummies 4 out of 5 stars.

As one reviewer called this book "...for dummies who can't find the information free on the web" - this is true, but for anyone who doesn't have the TIME to search through the zillions disassembled pieces of information about the Zune or the knowledge of which of those pieces they need, this is a great reference - a lot of it was almost too technical, but I got the basics of what I needed and recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to take the time to wade through the endless information on the web, free through it may be!

Editorial Review:

They explain the numerous entertaining possibilities of Zune, such as transferring a music collection to your Zune, purchasing new music, connecting with friends who share similar taste in music via ZuneLive!, and hooking Zune to your Xbox 360. Additional fun features covered include watching video on Zune, subscribing to podcasts, creating content to share with others, and a preview of upcoming Zune models.

The manual that should have come with the Zune - very basic 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

The Zune Pocket Guide is very well written. But the title tells it all - it is a pocket guide. Simple, basic and to the point. I had anticipated the guide to be pretty basic, with some advanced tips toward the end. I was however disappointed to discover that it is very basic. I'm still reading through it - but there appears to be NOTHING that I couldn't figure out on my own about the Zune. I am technically inclined, but Microsoft products also tend to be fairly user friendly - as in, if you play around enough you can figure it out. (I've probably just opened myself up for a lot of attacks on that comment.) One thing ALL Microsoft products lack though is a decent user manual. Granted, enough play and you can figure their products out. But some people out there are afraid to play, so I really wish MS would spend just a little extra and include manuals that are a little thicker than the 4 page booklets they have been using (and that only include all those safety warnings we all know and don't read). However, The Zune Pocket Guide by Farkas is just that. It IS the manual that MS should have included with the Zunes. Basic, straightforward and simple to follow. Great starting point for anyone who is not a Techno-Geek (have I just shown my age with that comment?). The entire book appears to be the manual written for the Zune that somewhere along the line got rejected before the release date - it even includes a fair amount of publicity for the Zune accessories available at the press time. So far, I've only found 2 useful pieces of information in it - info about the first sync erasing all the preloaded media on your Zune and the difference between basic and detailed online status. I'm only half way through the book, but I don't anticipate learning much more. Check it out from the library if you have figured out most of the Zune workings. Buy it if you are looking for more info before buying a Zune or if you are technically impaired.

Editorial Review:

XNA 3.0 brings you the ability to create games that will run not just on the PC and Xbox 360, but also on the Zune mobile device. While creating games for Zune is, in many ways, similar to working on the other platforms, it also presents its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. Smaller screens, limited storage, and less processing power all affect the way you need to think about designing and implementing your games.

Zune Game Development Using XNA 3.0 is a comprehensive book that will guide you through the many aspects of XNA game development and their specific implementations on the Zune platform. The book addresses Zune game development concepts in detail and shows you how to apply them in practical, step–by–step examples, building complete, working XNA 3.0 examples along the way that you can download and play.

What you’ll learn

  • Design practical games for the Zune.
  • Discover the ways in which you can develop content for the Zune.
  • Understand what makes the development of Zune games different from the development of PC and console games.
  • Create Zune games, from the simple to the complex, with complete working examples for you to play and learn from.
  • Use the XNA 3.0 Framework to play music from Zune’s library and your own custom sounds to enrich your games.
  • Understand how to take advantage of Zune’s wireless system to create multiplayer games.

Who is this book for?

This book is aimed at gaming enthusiasts with a good understanding of basic C# (the language underlying XNA) who want to create games for the Zune media player. Some knowledge of common game elements such as sprites, game loops, and animation would be helpful but is not required. (Readers looking for such a foundation can consult Beginning XNA 3.0 Game Programming for a comprehensive primer.)
