Not a joy to read and difficult to digest. 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This book is geared toward readers such as Web Developers, Information Management / Compliance Specialist, Administrators to name but a few. If you are a beginner to Sharepoint Server 2007, this book will be a most difficult read. The concepts and topics that are presented will have to be re-enforced with online research or the purchase of another book.

To give an example.
The book is composed of six sections, with the first three ( 663 pages in length ) being targeted towards administration and configuration. However, within this mix we have presentations on performance monitoring and MOM 2005, high level discussions on information security policies such as password and storage policies, data classification. We are introduced to advanced Enterprise topics such as the Business Data Catalogue and records compliance ( that is the Sarbanes Oxley Act etc. ). These discussions all assume prior expertise and should you be new to Sharepoint Server 2007 this will no doubt frustrate you. The Authors, in their quest to appeal to a wide variety of readers, cannot delve into the in-depth explanations, followed up by well worked out examples that a beginner to Sharepoint Server 2007 would require.

Web Developers will tend to focus on Sections 5 and 6. While these sections do introduce Workflow Services, Webparts and products like Sharepoint Designer I found the overriding theme is again one of high level discussion and overviews. Expertise is assumed.

Overall I would say that if you are coming from a background with some expertise in Sharepoint Server 2003 or you require a high level picture of the abundance of features that Sharepoint 2007 can bring to your organisation in addition to how it integrates with other server platforms, such as ISA 2006 for example, you will enjoy this book and the nuggets of useful information it provides. The writing style is not engaging; this book is not a joy to read but it will tell you what can be done with Sharepoint Server 2007, outline best practices and point you in the correct direction. The how-to part is very much left to yourself.

If however, your goal in purchasing this book is an in-depth knowledge of the installation, administration and configuration of Sharepoint 2007 and you have no prior expertise with Sharepoint Server 2003 or indeed 2001, then you will gain little benefit from this book. You will find it difficult to read, difficult to digest and your understanding of Sharepoint 2007 will not improve. If anything, you may be discouraged from using Sharepoint Server 2007 which would be a shame as the product is in my opinion really good. Regards.

If you're considering the vastly improved 2007 version of SharePoint, this concise, practical and friendly guide will teach you how to get the most from the latest version of Microsoft's information-sharing and collaboration platform. Best Installation Guide 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Having worked with Exchange since 5.0 I have read many installation guides and administrator's handbooks and I would rate this one as the best. I acquired this book after teaching how to configure and install Exchange 2007 to corporate clients and I have since done away with delivering them my own notes and simply recommend that they purchase this book. It is the ultimate guide to installing and configuring Exchange from a technical perspective. Way to go!

Editorial Review:

According to Microsoft, Exchange Server delivers over 75% of all corporate e-mail. The 2007 release is the fist major overhaul since 2003. It attempts to address the challenge of delivering greater performance and accessibility while increasing protection against a new generation of high risk security threats. Microsoft has added many new features that dramatically improve the scope of Exchange Server and the Outlook web client, positioning the platform as a groupware and collaboration tool that is accessible to remote and wireless users as will as those wired directly to the corporate intranet. The typical SysAdmin needs a reference that cuts through all the complexity and seldom-used features to get the product successfully deployed as efficiently as possible---exactly the job of the "How to Cheat" series.

Editorial Review:

Administering a Linux system isn't much like administering a Windows machine. Though the goals are similar and comparable problems arise under both environments, they each require administrators to adopt a certain way of thinking about processes and data. Linux Administration: A Beginner's Guide helps readers adapt their Windows experience to Linux work. Author Steve Shah does a great job of clueing Linux newcomers into the environment. His explanations are clear, patient, accurate, and useful, and they cover all aspects of the system administrator's job. He's careful to explain hundreds of commands in a logical way, including lists of options and examples of typical uses in many cases.

But this is no mere command reference or novice's introduction. Shah doesn't shy away from explaining the really interesting aspects of Linux administration, including kernel compilation, Domain Name Service (DNS) configuration, sendmail setup, and establishing firewall protection with IP chaining. For all of these subjects (and many more), this book includes clear statements of what concepts are relevant, which commands to issue, and what to expect in response. It's a great help in self-guided explorations. It's also worth having this book on hand for work assignments--you'll find complete recipes for configuring all major Internet and local area network (LAN) services that also take into account easy maintenance and security. --David Wall

Topics covered: Administering Linux 2.2.x (particularly Red Hat, Caldera, and SuSE distributions). Installation, initial configuration, using the bash command shell, managing files, managing software, and granting rights to users. DNS, FTP, Apache, sendmail, Samba, and other services receive lots of attention.

The Best Book for SharePoint out there!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This is the second SharePoint book I bought and once again this is the best and only book you need to deploy and engineer SharePoint Services or Server 2007. I am planning on upgrading our SharePoint 2.0 to Portal 2007 and this book gives enough information. Highly recommend this book to anyone who is in the process of deploying, engineering and supporting SharePoint Portal or Services.

Make sure this is your first SharePoint book 4 out of 5 stars.

SharePoint technologies is much more different than any other Microsoft technologies. You can install SQL Server or Microsoft.NET or Visual Studio with ease and start working on the product right away.

Regardless of what your role in your organization - programmer, power user, administrator, architect - one thing is must that if you want to learn SharePoint, you need to understand how to install and configure WSS and MOSS servers. It has many installtion models and one must learn what they are installing and what services they are configuring before creating first site collection or site to host team site or portal site.

That's where this book comes in picture. Forget that its part of Wrox's Beginning series and make sure this is your first SharePoint book at any cost. After first chapter of SharePoint introduction, Goran takes us through the WSS and MOSS installation and Configuration process in next 4 chapters. Understanding basics and what's going on behind the installtion and configution process is one of the key fundamentals one must know to be a great SharePoint programmer or administrator. Once you install and configure the product, make sure to go through Chapter 6 and 8 for advanced configurations and overview of outofbox WSS and MOSS site templates.

Although I have mixed opinion on remaining chapters - Office Integration, WCM, Document Management, and SharePoint designer, I must say this book is worth to have in your bookshelf for key WSS and MOSS installtion and configuration topics.

Editorial Review:

While the main focus of this book is on SharePoint administration, you will also learn how to customize SharePoint by creating templates and using SharePoint Designer to enhance the look and feel of SharePoint sites. Microsoft MVP and author Göran Husman explores the differences between Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) and Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), helps you decide if you need only WSS or if you should also implement MOSS, and much more.

EXCELLENT BOOK FOR ADMINISTRATORS AND DEVELOPERS 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Sometimes when I read reviews people have written I wonder if they've actually read the book or simply thumbed through it in a bookstore or did a search of the pages. This is an excellent book and I've found it to be extremely helpful in setting up and configuring SQL Server 2005. This book isn't meant to be an allinone monster book, its a concise, focused book covering the core of SQL Server 2005, particularly for administrators but also extremely helpful for developers who are setting up sql boxes too. If you are developing databases for SQL Server 2005 you'll need a focused development book too especially if you are doing datawarehousing or datamart work or reporting services.

I got more out of this book's 548 pages than books nearly twice as big. The book has T-SQL examples throughout and I've used them for administration. The book has excellent coverage of SQL security, nearly 100 pages of security information covered in Chapter 3 "Managing Security, Access, and Network Configuration" and in Chapter 8 "Managing SQL Server 2005 Security". Excellent coverage of log shipping and database mirroring. The book covers schemas for administration perspectives but not in a database development perspective.

I used this book to gain a solid understanding of SQL Server 2005 setup, configuration and management. I refer to it all the time.

This is a great book for your everyday needs and I use it all the time. Highly recommended.
