Editorial Review:

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) networks have freed users from the tyranny of big telecom, allowing people to make phone calls over the Internet at very low or no cost. But while VoIP is easy and cheap, it's notoriously lacking in security. With minimal effort, hackers can eavesdrop on conversations, disrupt phone calls, change caller IDs, insert unwanted audio into existing phone calls, and access sensitive information.

Hacking VoIP takes a dual approach to VoIP security, explaining its many security holes to hackers and administrators. If you're serious about security, and you either use or administer VoIP, you should know where VoIP's biggest weaknesses lie and how to shore up your security. And if your intellectual curiosity is leading you to explore the boundaries of VoIP, Hacking VoIP is your map and guidebook.

Hacking VoIP will introduce you to every aspect of VoIP security, both in home and enterprise implementations. You'll learn about popular security assessment tools, the inherent vulnerabilities of common hardware and software packages, and how to:

  • Identify and defend against VoIP security attacks such as eavesdropping, audio injection, caller ID spoofing, and VoIP phishing
  • Audit VoIP network security
  • Assess the security of enterprise-level VoIP networks such as Cisco, Avaya, and Asterisk, and home VoIP solutions like Yahoo! and Vonage
  • Use common VoIP protocols like H.323, SIP, and RTP as well as unique protocols like IAX
  • Identify the many vulnerabilities in any VoIP network

Whether you're setting up and defending your VoIP network against attacks or just having sick fun testing the limits of VoIP networks, Hacking VoIP is your go-to source for every aspect of VoIP security and defense.

paper wasted sip book 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Author is really good but the way SIP described in the book is a kind of child-story , details on important parts of SIP and on unified services are skipped instead make-up parts are highlighted.

Essential reading on computers, freedom and privacy. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Bruce Sterling of Cyberpunk fame takes a journalistic approach to researching law and disorder on the electronic frontier by examining two specific events in depth : the 1990 Operation Sundevil, a concerted nationwide effort by district attorneys, the Secret Service, the FBI, local authorities and various Telco security to bust and publicize a hacker crackdown; and the resulting trials and creation of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and rise of the civil libertarians.

The book is divided into four parts: crashing the system, the digital underground, law and order, and the Civil Libertarians. Mr. Sterling does a credible job explaining the telco systems and motivations and actions of the people on both sides of the issue - phone phreaks/hackers and law enforcement/district attorneys without succumbing to a lot of jargon or taking sides.

The book is replete with interesting accounts of Alexander Graham Bell and history of telephony, the origins of the Secret Service and its' early battles with "Boodlers", and the dissemination of the E911 document that came to cause grief to many people.

Reading this in 2006 and beyond will cause a few chuckles at his penchant for describing and drooling over advance systems (I have a real urge to drive down to the storage unit for my Commodore 64 and IBM clone), yet the events of the early hacker sub-culture remain relevant to anyone interested in computers, freedom and privacy.

Editorial Review:

An investigation into the rising tide of electronic crimes probes into the issues and personalities on both sides of the law who are involved in wire fraud, 800-number abuse, and computer break-ins that threaten national security. 50,000 first printing.

Voice over IP Security

Security best practices derived from deep analysis of the latest VoIP network threats

Patrick Park

VoIP security issues are becoming increasingly serious because voice networks and services cannot be protected from recent intelligent attacks and fraud by traditional systems such as firewalls and NAT alone. After analyzing threats and recent patterns of attacks and fraud, consideration needs to be given to the redesign of secure VoIP architectures with advanced protocols and intelligent products, such as Session Border Controller (SBC). Another type of security issue is how to implement lawful interception within complicated service architectures according to government requirements.

Voice over IP Security focuses on the analysis of current and future threats, the evaluation of security products, the methodologies of protection, and best practices for architecture design and service deployment. This book not only covers technology concepts and issues, but also provides detailed design solutions featuring current products and protocols so that you can deploy a secure VoIP service in the real world with confidence.

Voice over IP Security gives you everything you need to understand the latest security threats and design solutions to protect your VoIP network from fraud and security incidents.

Patrick Park has been working on product design, network architecture design, testing, and consulting for more than 10 years. Currently Patrick works for Cisco® as a VoIP test engineer focusing on security and interoperability testing of rich media collaboration gateways. Invaluable T1 reference 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is an invaluable reference to the art and science of T1 lines. If you're in a position where you regularly install or troubleshoot T1 lines, this book will make you infinitely more successfully at your job.

The book puts many topics under 1 cover, including the physical wiring of T1 jacks, the configuration options needed when ordering, as well as the methodlogy used by the telephone company to troubleshoot malfunctioning lines. Unlike many telecommunications references, this book is written focusing on the practical aspects of installing, troublehsooting, and monitoring t1 jacks. There's sufficient background material to explain how things work, but it focuses on the practical, making it a much quicker read.

By understanding the language and concepts of T1 lines you'll be able to much more effectively troubleshoot T1 activity and interact with the telco. Even if you don't work with these on a daily basis but are just curious, the book is well written enough that it makes for an interesting read.

Editorial Review:

T1: A Survival Guide is a practical, applied reference for Internet data transport using T1, a 40-year-old technology originally designed for AT&T's voice network rather than for data transport. In spite of its limitations, T1 is proven, reliable, and likely to be around for a while. In the past, network administrators have mainly learned T1 by apprenticeship, stumbling on troubleshooting tidbits and filing them away until they were needed again. This book brings together in one reference the information you need to set up, test, and troubleshoot T1.T1: A Survival Guide covers the following broad topics:
  • What components are needed to build a T1 line, and how those components interact to transmit data effectively
  • How to use standardized link layer protocols to adapt the T1 physical layer to work with data networks
  • Troubleshooting and working with vendors

Bluetooth Made Easy 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Of the books on the market on Bluetooth, this was the first I have found obviously written with the reader in mind. This book is excellent for non-engineers who just want to know a bit more about this technology without earning a radio communications degree at the same time. I recommend this book to any business person with a need to know more about this technology on a mostly non-technical level. If this is what the End to End books are all like, I think I will be a huge fan!

Editorial Review:

Bite into Bluetooth! Get the definitive guide featuring the end to end details about the hot wireless technology that makes universal wireless possibilities endless.

Bluetooth End to End is a comprehensive look at the technology from the standpoint of the IT Professional. The book goes above and beyond a simple re-hashing of the specification to provide practical implementation information on Bluetooth technology application fundamentals, implementation, wireless networking, Bluetooth security considerations, chip technology and the required specifications for Bluetooth device development culled from networking professionals.
