A Practical, Down-to-Earth Treatment of a Complex Subject 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Ken Camp's "IP Telephony Demystified" is a valuable resource for anyone comtemplating the deployment of an IP telephony infrastructure. The introductory material in the beginning prepares the reader for discussion of more complex topics to come. Chapters 4, 6 and 7 deal with the details of the technologies involved in an IP telephony architecture. They are written in an easy-to-understand fashion and offer meaningful comparisons among competing IP telephony standards. Whereas most treatments of this subject focus almost exclusively on the technical details, Mr. Camp's approach places equal emphasis on the business aspects of IP telephony implementation. Chapter 5 offers a particularly honest discussion of the potential benefits of IP telephony in a number of business settings. To summarize, whether you're on the technical side trying to make sense of the myriad of details that comprise IP telephony or on the non-technical side trying to make the best business decisions possible for your organization, there's something in this book for you.

Editorial Review:

IP (Internet Protocol) telephony is simply voice sent over the internet, rather than the traditional phone system. IP telephony has the potential to lower long distance rates by a factor of ten, and can combine voice and data services. IT people are being asked to implement or investigate IP telephony solutions. Small companies are looking to economize by adopting it. Everyone is wondering what IP telephony can do for them. This book will demystify IP telephony for both business people and technology generalists. These people need to understand why to either embrace or shun IP telephony for their individual needs, this book will give them the information to do just that.

Strategies and solutions for successful VoIP deployments

Justify your network investment

  • The step-by-step approach to VoIP deployment and management enables you to plan early and properly for successful VoIP integration with your existing systems, networks, and applications.
  • The detailed introduction offers a common grounding for members of both the telephony and data networking communities.
  • IT managers and project leaders are armed with details on building a business case for VoIP, including details of return-on-investment (ROI) analysis and justification.
  • A VoIP deployment is presented as a major IT project, enabling you to understand the steps involved and the required resources.
  • The comprehensive look at quality of service and tuning describes when and where to use them in a VoIP deployment. These are often the most complex topics in VoIP; you'll get smart recommendations on which techniques to use in various circumstances.
  • You learn how to plan for VoIP security, including prevention, detection, and reaction.

Voice over IP (VoIP) is the telephone system of the future. Problem is, VoIP is not yet widely deployed, so there are few skilled practitioners today. As you make your move to VoIP, how will you know how to make VoIP work and keep it working well? What changes will you need to make without disrupting your business? How can you show your return on this investment?

Many books contain technical details about VoIP, but few explain in plain language how to make it run successfully in an enterprise. Taking Charge of Your VoIP Project provides the detailed plans you need to be successful in your organization's deployment of VoIP. Through their years of work in the field, authors John Q. Walker and Jeffrey T. Hicks bring a project-oriented approach to VoIP, with much-needed clarity on getting VoIP to work well.

Taking Charge of Your VoIP Project starts with simple concepts, each chapter building on the knowledge from the last. Although not a technical manual, you learn about the standards, such as H.323, G.711, and Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP), and the implications they have on your VoIP system. Most importantly, you'll gain expert advice and a systematic guide on how to make VoIP work for your organization.

This volume is in the Network Business Series offered by Cisco Press. Books in this series provide IT executives, decision makers, and networking professionals with pertinent information on today's most important technologies and business strategies.

    Editorial Review:

Security is always a concern with any new technology. When we think security we typically think of stopping an attacker from breaking in or gaining access. However, based on the broad reach of wireless, stopping someone from passively listening is just as critical. Intrusion detection systems, firewalls, and forensics are just a few of the key areas that must be understood and applied to proactively solve the wireless problem. From short text messaging to war driving, Wireless Crime and Forensic Investigation explores all aspects of wireless technology, how it is used in daily life, and how it will be used in the future. The book provides a one-stop resource on the types of wireless crimes that are being committed and forensic investigation techniques for wireless devices and wireless networks. The author's straightforward and easy to read style seamlessly integrates the topics of wireless security and computer forensics. He provides a solid understanding of modern wireless technologies, wireless security techniques and wireless crime techniques, as well as conducting forensic analysis on wireless devices and networks. Each chapter, while part of a greater whole, can stand on its own, making researching wireless technologies, security, crime, or forensics easy. With a problem space as big and complex as wireless, proactive measures must be put in place, and put in place immediately. To protect your organization, you need to be well versed in the new technology sooner rather than later. You can pay now or you can pay later. Later always costs more. This book not only has all the information required to become proficient in wireless technology, but also provides the information required for conducting a forensic analysis in a wireless environment.

In Securing VoIP Networks, two leading experts systematically review the security risks and vulnerabilities associated with VoIP networks and offer proven, detailed recommendations for securing them. Drawing on case studies from their own fieldwork, the authors address VoIP security from the perspective of real-world network implementers, managers, and security specialists. The authors identify key threats to VoIP networks, including eavesdropping, unauthorized access, denial of service, masquerading, and fraud; and review vulnerabilities in protocol design, network architecture, software, and system configuration that place networks at risk. They discuss the advantages and tradeoffs associated with protection mechanisms built into SIP, SRTP, and other VoIP protocols; and review key management solutions such as MIKEY and ZRTP. Next, they present a complete security framework for enterprise VoIP networks, and provide detailed architectural guidance for both service providers and enterprise users.

Better for historical value 1 out of 5 stars.

I found this book to be completely outdated and useless. I had expected to find some state of the art data, or at least recent information. When it came to the best modems, 2400 baud was the best available but 14,400 baud might offer some potential.

It was my fault for buying this dog as I had assumed that it was updated as of 1997 - it was only copyrighted then.

A Good Book 4 out of 5 stars.

The title is accurate. If you want to learn about telephone electronics, this is a great book. It's easy to read, comprehensive and well structured. No, it doesn't go into great detail about state of the art modems or attempt to teach the finepoints of wireless telephony, but it does cover basic fax, modem and telephone electronics very well.

    Editorial Review:

    * Covers conventional telephone fundamentals and analog and modern digital communications techniques * Features sidebar notes and end of chapter quizzes Understanding Telephone Electronics is an overview of telephone networking which shows how it is connected with the real world and introduces its component parts. The book explains the basics of the non-electronic telephone set and vital telephone functions. It then explores signal processing, telephone line interfacing, tone and pulse generation, and ringers. These concepts and principles are accompanied by a thorough look at the world of digital communications.

Can the cell phone forever change the way people communicate? The mobile phone is more than simply a technical innovation or a social fad, more than just an intrusion on polite society. This book, based on worldwide research involving tens of thousands of interviews and contextual observations, looks into the impact of the phone on our daily lives, including changes in our accessibility, safety and security, coordination, and use of public places.

A particularly "good read", this book will be important to the designers, information designers, social psychologists, and others who will have an impact on the development of the various new third generation of mobile telephones.
