The only book on Web Analytics you'll ever need 5 out of 5 stars.

Technologies evolve, but the PROCESS by which we should collect and analyze online data in order to gain solid, actionable insights will remain constant for the foreseeable future.

I have been fortunate enough to work with some of the smartest online marketers in the business, and, to say the very least, most of these people -- especially those in the analytics community -- seem content to share their expertise in the most confusing and theoretical manner possible. But not Avinash Kaushik. And in "An Hour a Day," Avinash proves why he is the world's most trusted name in analytics: he brings us up to his level without unnecessary jargon, so we can actually understand how to do this stuff!

Without question, this book is required reading for ANY online marketer, business owner, or anyone currently outsourcing their web analytics. (Warning: You may become better at this than the people you're paying to do it for you!)

Have a website you're not properly tracking? You're not alone! Less than a third of e-commerce and B2B sites have sufficient web analytics tracking -- let alone a process by which to glean insight from it -- and it's not the technology's fault. The problem is that most people don't understand the VALUE and NECESSITY of web analytics. They don't realize it's the difference between sink or swim. For most organizations, web analytics is an afterthought; something pawned off to those with technical knowledge when it should really be understood by those who need to use this data to make serious business decisions. Well, folks, those days are over. If all you know about your site is how many page views, uniques, or (*yikes*) "hits" it's getting, you're in much worse shape than you currently realize, simply because you have no idea how much money and attention you're missing out on if you have no clear goals in mind or a system by which to quantify it.

If you're not measuring it properly, how can you ever claim to have an online strategy that's working? How else will you know how successful your campaign is? How else will you know which elements to test and optimize?

Whether you're a beginner or you know just enough about web analytics to be dangerous, you should absolutely buy this book today. The book pays for itself a hundred fold in the very first hour of the very first day.

Editorial Review:

Written by an in-the-trenches practitioner, this step-by-step guide shows you how to implement a successful Web analytics strategy. Web analytics expert Avinash Kaushik, in his thought-provoking style, debunks leading myths and leads you on a path to gaining actionable insights from your analytics efforts. Discover how to move beyond clickstream analysis, why qualitative data should be your focus, and more insights and techniques that will help you develop a customer-centric mindset without sacrificing your company’s bottom line.

Theories and theories alone! 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you are looking for "Actionable Web Analytics" or how to "Use Data to Make Smart Business Decisions", then look somewhere else. The title of this book and the 5 star reviews given by some people here has misled me. I have red 75% of this book and finally decided to stop waisting my time. The book goes around web analytics and never gets into the point or give any specific practical recommendation.

It was a total waist of time and If there is a way I can return it back I will do so immediately.

Editorial Review:

Knowing everything you can about each click to your Web site can help you make strategic decisions regarding your business. This book is about the why, not just the how, of web analytics and the rules for developing a "culture of analysis" inside your organization. Why you should collect various types of data. Why you need a strategy. Why it must remain flexible. Why your data must generate meaningful action. The authors answer these critical questions—and many more—using their decade of experience in Web analytics.

Good Introduction 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent book for those who know little or nothing about web analytics.
It explains the what and the why of web analytics. It then does a good job of discussing software. The pros and cons of each without any bias.
I am already using Awstats, a server side analytics tool, and still learned a few things. It also covers Google analytics, which is free and a very valuable tool for any website.

Old friend gets facelift and becomes more beautiful 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 34 people found this review helpful.

Although the title is new, this book is based on the authors' 1998 book titled "Web PErformance Metrics, Models and Methods (ISBN 0136938221). This book is more than a minor rewrite - the chapters are in a different sequence, and each has been updated. None of the information that made the older book such a valuable resource was lost in the process. For example, the material on queuing theory and analysis remains, and it among the best written tutorials in print. What has changed includes:

(1) Shifting of focus from client/server and web server environments to web services, with an emphasis on performance characteristics of SOAP and UDDI. Client server issues are still covered because these issues are still germane.

(2) An emphasis on architecture and how performance and capacity fit into a larger picture. Network and server performance characteristics are examined in detail.

What hasn't changed includes the excellent material on performance and benchmarking basics, detailed analysis techniques, and the support for this book that the authors provide on the book's web site. I especially like the Excel spreadsheets that you can download to use in conjunction with material in nearly every chapter.

Overall, this is one more of a series of books on various aspects of performance and capacity management. I also recommend reading their companion book, "Scaling for E-Business: Technologies, Models, Performance, and Capacity Planning" (ISBN 0130863289), which covers the applications level of e-commerce systems and seamlessly complements the material in this book.

It is out-of-date and unorganized. 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The tone of this book is pretty coversational but unorganized. The information in this book is pretty much out of date. For example, this book still talk a lot of banner ad which is almost out of the scope in today's ad on web, while talking little or nothing about PPC. It brings out some good old metric but nothing new. The technolgy foundation of this book is old and weak and can not reflect and keep up with the current trends.

This book is not efficient in pointing out things. It could be more condensed. I don't think this is neccessary to tell the whole author's personal story and some other trivial things to explain things. YOu would just need to point out the definition, and how to apply it, and how to interepte it and etc.

This book just includes a lot of unncessary personal story and waste reader's time. If you need a book which is right to the point and nothing more, this book is not right for you.

Editorial Review:

There now exists a wealth of tools and techniques that can determine if and how a Web site is providing business value to its owners. This book is a survey of those metrics and is as important to IT executives as it is to marketing professionals.
  • Jim Sterne is recognized worldwide as a leading Internet business expert and is the author of several Wiley books, including WWW Marketing, Third Edition (0-471-41621-5)
  • Explains the criteria for building a successful site, surveying the tools, services, techniques, and standards for Web measurement, and fully integrating those metrics with the customer experience
  • Companion Web site contains links to online tools, resources, and white papers

Editorial Review:

Given your server hardware and Internet connection, how many users can your Web site handle? Capacity Planning for Web Performance can show you the techniques for estimating and planning effectively for your Web site's workload, both for today and tomorrow. This textbook-style treatment of the topic presents concepts and formulas for making sure your Web infrastructure is up to the task.

In early sections of this book, the authors introduce the basic concepts of capacity planning and some of the Web-specific issues that you must overcome for effective planning. (For instance, Web traffic is "bursty"--as any Webmaster will attest--and can fluctuate greatly.) Short chapters on system architectures, from traditional client servers to today's Web-centered thin clients, are discussed, as are the basics of TCP/IP and HTTP.

Subsequent sections discuss how to measure performance on your system, using tools such as Web benchmarks, and how to provide formulas for estimating how much hardware is required for "acceptable" performance.

Throughout Capacity Planning for Web Performance, there's a fair amount of mathematical detail. Though there are plenty of real-world examples, this is not a guide to just tweaking Web servers; this is a highly technical guide to state-of-the-art thinking on issues of measuring performance on the Internet. Applying metrics to Web performance can benefit any Web-minded business, though it will probably take the technically savvy reader to effectively execute this knowledge. --Richard Dragan

This digital document is a journal article from Information & Management, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
The work discussed here focused on the evaluation of quality perceptions of users of an electronic government website. As government organizations have begun to enhance transparency, communicate, and interact with citizens via the web, the development of appropriate online services has demanded better understanding of user requirements and thus for tailoring of solutions. The site we examined enabled the online submission of self-assessed tax returns in the UK. Survey data were used to model the perceptions of site users. In addition to the quantitative data, we also collected comments from respondents. These, using data triangulation, provided additional insight into the perceptions of site quality. The results of the comment analysis both supported the instrument and pointed to additional factors determining the perceptions of quality of e-government services needing attention in instrument development.
