Best Delphi book for beginners! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

If you are new to programming, and want to learn Delphi... This is your book.

I found the book interesting, and very well structured. It can take any beginner and make them a programmer in a few weeks.

The problem with most computer books for beginners, is that they are written by programmers that already know how to program. So many minor details that confuse beginners are often left out. Besides, this book is really fun.

Editorial Review:

This book teaches distance-learning students how to program in Delphi, a major computer language used to design a variety of programs.

If you are a Delphi programmer wanting to learn .NET, this is the book 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

As someone who used to use Delphi almost all the time, I hate to admit that in order to stay employable today, I'm having to know and use .NET. If you find yourself in the same situation, and you want a fast-track to .NET 2.0, then this book is at the top of the list.

It's the single most used book in my collection today when it comes to .NET.

At first, I read it cover to cover. It's not hard reading like some books can be, and it made sense to me since I know Delphi.
But with Jon's writing style, it's organized in a way that I reach for it when I need a quick reference as well.

It comes with special tidbits about the inner workings of the CLR, which I always find fascinating.

I keep it at the front of my bookshelf. I've had other programmers that C++ guys come by and ask to use it. So you don't need to know Delphi to make good use of it. Borland C++ Builder users will find it an easy read as well since Builder is built on Delphi.

Five thumbs up for this one. Well done Jon!

Editorial Review:

.NET 2.0 for Delphi Programmers explores .NET from a Delphi programmers viewpoint, and it is ideal for Delphi programmers moving to .NET. It presents the core concepts of the .NET world in terms you are familiar with. This book will help you with Delphi for .NET as well as C#.

Apress publishes migration books for both VB 6 and C++ programmers moving to .NET. Consider this the Delphi installment of Apress migration books! There is ample coverage of C# as well as Delphi for .NET inside this newest addition.

Total waste of time and money 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Most code samples don't even compile. A third of the book is wasted on some fictional account of an idiotic detective (what does that have to do with Delphi programming??). The technical info is scarce, and there isn't any depth whatsoever. Not worth the effort of opening the package.

No satisfaction with code or publisher! 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Much of the code was ommitted on the CD. The code that is there does not work. There are no updates on the publisher's site as specified in the book. One of the authors who replied to my emails was sympathetic, but was also dissatisfied with the publisher. The chapter on hierarchical databases was the worst offender - and the main reason I bought the book. So much promise, so little gain. However, it was written well and I like the explanations. COM Basics explained nicely....BUT.....Some Major Typos 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book has already added several nuclear warheads to my programming arsenal. It explained many concepts I have struggled with in a very explicit manner. There is a severe problem with this book however. I have already found errors in the code examples that have hindered my learning. The top code example on page 24, and on page 26 are good examples. On page 24, TObject was not typecasted as a TFormattedInteger and thus could not be casted "AS" an IFormattedNumber. It generated the compiler error described on page 25 even though I had a GUID declared in the IFormattedNumber interface. On page 26, MyInteger is incorrectly declared as a IFormattedInteger, even though no such Interface is declared in any of his other examples. I do not want to belittle this excellent book however. I just simply cannot give a book with these types of errors 5 stars when the writer obviously did not test every example he presents. It is definately still worth buying. I even suggest buying this in tandem with "Delphi4 Unleashed" by Charley Calvert because that book explains COM/Interfaces a little differently and can help you get the concepts faster by filling in some of the gaps. Hope this helps. Curtis S. Lead Programmer/Analyst Insurance Technologies Corp.

Editorial Review:

Microsoft COM is prevalent throughout Windows operating systems--95, 98, NT. To build applications which interface with Windows systems, therefore, programmers must understand and learn to use COM. This book will lay the groundwork for understanding COM, and focus on how to develop applications in Delphi which interact efficiently with Windows systems. The book will include coverage of DCOM, Microsoft's distributed architecture which is based on COM. It will also cover the latest developments in Delphi 5, currently due out in September 1999.This book will teach COM programming to Delphi 4 and 5 programmers. After providing an understanding of the COM framework, it offers a practical exploration of COM to enable Delphi developers to program component-based applications. Typical real-world scenarios, such as Windows Shell programming, automating Microsoft Agent, and creating and using ActiveX controls, will be explored. Discussion of each topic will be illustrated with detailed examples.

Good foundation to Delphi 4 or 5 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be very good in presenting Delphi in a understandable manner. Having a computer science background, I could grasp the concepts easily and never seem to get bored of the book. Even if you don't have a background in programming, I definitely recommend this book to start you off because its an easy read, and you will not have go through tons of concepts before reaching the code but instead, it'll present useful coded examples followed with important explainations on how/why its done.

I got this book because I wanted to start off my Delphi adventure, and it delivered! Its also comforting to know that its not a thick book!! It gives you plenty of examples and teaches you what you REALLY need to know, using Object Pascal and the RAD components! Not only that, it gives you self-review and practice questions to work on after each chapter. So basically it cuts to the chase and tells you what you ought to learn rather than what you might find useful.

As a conclusion, I recommend that you buy this book whatever your level of programming may be as it not only shows you how Delphi is used but also builds up your foundation on programming principles as shown in the book.

One of My Favorite Authors 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I tried to buy this book a while ago. It went out of print or I couldn't get it. It has been a while since I've seen a Delphi Book by Mr. Weiner. I'm shocked that it's here. Mr. Weiner is a excellent writer of computer books. He always covers a computer language in great detail. I was impress with seeing his coverage of Delphi before the book went out of print. Then I bought his Eiffel Book and was blown away. So I know this book is going to leave a mark. Warning! This book may be a hazard to your social life. I want it!
