*THE* Beginner Book for Delphi 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Frank Engo's book is excellently written for beginners. Delphi 3 for Dummies is *NOT* a good beginner book. D3fD is still a good book, just not a good one for beginners. How to Program Delphi 3 features a large typeface, screenshots, commented code, and it's not a huge book (a 800 page book might be daunting for newbies). Not really a Pascal reference, but because Pascal isn't difficult to read, his comments would immensely explain what is going on at each line. I own at least 8 Delphi books I can name off the top of my head, and if I've ever seen a good one for beginners, this is it.

A Good beginning 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a Clipper programmer moving to Delphi and I found this book to be an excellent introduction to programming in Borland Pascal.

I have read several Delphi books and really hate the style that shows you how to browse through the DBDEMOS animals in a simplistic--almost childish--window. Then they move on to programming the Windows API or other esoteric topics.

Mr. Engo move steadily from the very simple to the more complex. This is not a book for the advanced user--probably not even for the intermediate--but it is possibly the best for the novice.

He covers topics such as How to dress up your interface, How to create Multiform applications, Common Programming mistakes, Working with Procedures and Functions and How to build database applications -- with and without SQL.

The biggest disappointment--and I particularly wanted help on this--was the section on reports. It refers to ReportSmith (D3 comes with QuickReports!)

An added bonus is a library of functions--including the source code. They are fairly elementary, but an excellent learning tool, especially for those of us who wrote our own libraries in Clipper, and suddenly feal naked when we come to a new language without years of accumulate functions.

If you are looking for a good introduction to Delphi 3 -- I'm pretty sure everything will work in Delphi 4 -- then this is the book for you.

Practical and Effective Teaching of Delphi Programming 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

For several years, I searched for ways to learn to use Delphi to create language-analysis programs. No courses are offered in Atlanta. All of the "learn to program with Delphi" books that I found on Amazon are horrible in similar ways: (a) They promise to start at the beginning but can't figure out where the beginning is. (b) They make huge leaps between levels. (c) They do not have enough practical activities to help the learn understand and apply features in Delphi. (d) They give exercise/practice activities that require knowledge not presented in the book.

I had given up. Then, over the 2003 Christmas holidays, I decided to check around the Internet one last time for Delphi materials. I stumbled over an online course offered through the University of South Africa that is built around "Introducing Delphi Programming: Theory through Practice." The example materials for the course demonstrated a very practical set of explanations and exercises. So, I ordered the book through Amazon-UK because it was not at that time available in the U.S.

"Introducting Delphi programming: Theory through Practice" turned out to be outstanding: it begins where I needed to begin; it progresses smoothly from task to task; it is built around sets of practical exercises and practice activities; explanations are clear and well organized. It is the best "how to" book of any type that I've ever used.

In addition, there's an online course offered through the University of South Africa. I've signed up and am progressing through the book at the schedule required for the course; the schedule helps to keep me working away at learning Delphi in the midst of a busy life. The course also offers email contact with 2 of the authors of the book (Gelderblom and Miller) for help with the activities.

Total waste of time and money 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Most code samples don't even compile. A third of the book is wasted on some fictional account of an idiotic detective (what does that have to do with Delphi programming??). The technical info is scarce, and there isn't any depth whatsoever. Not worth the effort of opening the package.

No satisfaction with code or publisher! 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Much of the code was ommitted on the CD. The code that is there does not work. There are no updates on the publisher's site as specified in the book. One of the authors who replied to my emails was sympathetic, but was also dissatisfied with the publisher. The chapter on hierarchical databases was the worst offender - and the main reason I bought the book. So much promise, so little gain. However, it was written well and I like the explanations. Editorial Review:

Documents the creation of 32-bit console applications for Windows 95 and NT. Includes a suite of powerful Delphi components that encapsulates the most important Internet protocols including finger, FTP, and email. Includes the most complete, detailed system-level drag-and-drop coverage in the business, including both Delphi-based drag-and-drop and Windows drag-and-drop. Covers all the details of enabling creation of Windows DLLs right in Delphi. Explains the undocumented mechanisms for passing dynamic data to the routines in the obscure Math unit.

Good foundation to Delphi 4 or 5 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be very good in presenting Delphi in a understandable manner. Having a computer science background, I could grasp the concepts easily and never seem to get bored of the book. Even if you don't have a background in programming, I definitely recommend this book to start you off because its an easy read, and you will not have go through tons of concepts before reaching the code but instead, it'll present useful coded examples followed with important explainations on how/why its done.

I got this book because I wanted to start off my Delphi adventure, and it delivered! Its also comforting to know that its not a thick book!! It gives you plenty of examples and teaches you what you REALLY need to know, using Object Pascal and the RAD components! Not only that, it gives you self-review and practice questions to work on after each chapter. So basically it cuts to the chase and tells you what you ought to learn rather than what you might find useful.

As a conclusion, I recommend that you buy this book whatever your level of programming may be as it not only shows you how Delphi is used but also builds up your foundation on programming principles as shown in the book.

Editorial Review:

This book is aimed at people with limited or no programming experience and equips them with the skills required by a professional programmer. These skills are taught within the Delphi environment allowing the user the 'fun' of producing attractive Graphical User Interfaces, whilst learning the fundamentals of programming, which are transferable to other imperative and object based languages.

One of My Favorite Authors 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I tried to buy this book a while ago. It went out of print or I couldn't get it. It has been a while since I've seen a Delphi Book by Mr. Weiner. I'm shocked that it's here. Mr. Weiner is a excellent writer of computer books. He always covers a computer language in great detail. I was impress with seeing his coverage of Delphi before the book went out of print. Then I bought his Eiffel Book and was blown away. So I know this book is going to leave a mark. Warning! This book may be a hazard to your social life. I want it!

Editorial Review:

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A620193. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study examined the strategic goals that were the basis for the DoDs implementation of mandatory certification for individuals serving in the contracting career field of the acquisition workforce. The study then went on to enlist panels of contracting experts to assess the extent to which two of the available certification programs meet, or fail to meet, those goals. The research method employed to gather input from experts was a Delphi discussion technique. Two separate panels, one consisting of Air Force civilian employees, the other of Air Force active duty officers, participated in eight Delphi iterations facilitated by the researcher. The initial iteration required the experts to answer seven open-ended questions regarding certification requirements. Once the researcher confirmed the experts were focusing on the strategic value of certification, the subsequent iterations were used to identify and allow comment on areas of disagreement both within and between groups. The primary impact of this study was that it identified many important issues that require attention before the certification programs will be able to fulfill the strategic objectives. Overall, the experts believed the NCMA CPCM to be a truly professional certification, indicative of an individual's professional status and level of development, while the Air Force's APDP certification process was seen as more of a tracking device for training and education rather than a program that enhances professional development.
