Please don't use this book to teach an EC class!!! 1 out of 5 stars.

This book did nothing to enhance my knowledge of E-Commerce. The terms used in this book are not terms that are commonly used. The authors should not be writing textbooks or instructional guides. The illustrations and diagrams did nothing to help the reader understand the material. The diagrams were literally a joke used just to fill up space. I quickly got tired of being given a short definition and told it will be discussed later. The book doesn't flow and leaves the reader frustrated. The authors use of E-Commerce terminology was too often bogged down in clichéd rhetoric. Don't use this book to gain knowledge about E-Commerce you'll find yourself falling asleep and rereading sentences way too often.

For beginners only! 1 out of 5 stars.

If you've been seriously programming for a while in ASP.NET, don't waste your time with this book. Having spent a lot of time searching and reading on msdn.microsoft.com and other sites to enhance my skill set, I bought this book thinking I would find some advanced concepts that I haven't already picked up on my own. There are no advanced concepts, just a bunch of very simple examples, some of which do not even work. I was very disappointed with this book and sent it back the same day it arrived.

Editorial Review:

Up-to-speed with ASP.NET? This book gives you a topic and the 5 to 24 "recipes" you need to get the common or not-so-common task done using ASP.NET. ASP.NET Developer's Cookbook will use VB.NET exclusively but will include both VB and C# examples on the supporting Web site (in both working and downloadable forms). Each recipe has what you need a brief descriptive name, followed by a description of the task, followed by the technique itself, and finally a "comments" section where the technique is discussed.

Great beginner's how-to 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is great for beginners. Many people are afraid of eBay because they don't understand it. This book can ease those fears. The McGrath's take newbies step by step through the processes of getting started. Plenty of screen shots and examples make complex info easier to digest.

I applaud their including both buying and selling on eBay and actually starting with buying. It's a great way to learn the system, build up a little feedback and then ease into the money-making side. My family often checks eBay for items before we shop offline, and several of us make additional money selling there (some are businesses, some individuals). You can read just the buyers' sections and use eBay as your bargain-hunting ground, or scour your attic, neighborhood and hobby room for items to sell.

Whatever you hope to gain from eBay, you will find detailed instructions on how to do so. With this book, you can actually be buying and selling online in no time at all. And, in a few weeks, this book and a bit of practice can level the playing field, quickly making you an expert.

This book cover security questions thoroughly, too and while there is no guarantee, education and a healthy dose of caution will certainly help beginners feel more comfortable. Media hype and urban legends can make online selling seem like a snakepit of cons and a surefire way to lose your shirt, and the public needs to know that it's actually safer than that.

eBay and other online auction sites can be quite helpful to small business owners or to families who need a little extra money. This book can help you learn the ropes in an easy-to-comprehend manner.

Editorial Review:

Invaluable advice for new users, and professional buyers and sellers.

Millions of items—from homes to books to cars—are sold to millions of buyers on eBay®. This high-profile, growing company continues to attract new users daily, and you need a comprehensive introduction to the site to explain how to set up an account; buy, sell, and bid; protect transactions; find the best deals; make a profit; utilize search results; and more.

Very handy reference book and checklist 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

While there are many books on the market that discuss patterns related to programming, architectural elements, etc., this is the first book I've seen that focuses on web patterns at the user interface level. The book is essentially an indexed, cross-referenced, best practices guide to building web pages that attract and keep customers. Or at least keep you from pissing them off. The authors have collected and summarized a great deal of HCI research (all listed in the resources section of the appendix) on web usability, so none of this stuff is made up--it's all based on time-proven, tested, and verified data about how people actually use the Internet (e.g., see Amazon, Yahoo!, Google, et. al.). A few of the patterns are no longer considered best practices, due to evolving standards (e.g., CSS) and increasing browser standards support. This is a very handy reference book, especially for an in-depth UI checklist.

Review 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 14 people found this review helpful.

The first part of the book is very valuable. The patterns described are on average rather shallow and don't touch on the real issues. For the 'novice' however this is a very relevant book to read. I do advice to deepen understanding by looking at actual websites to see how leaders have implemented the different patterns. Much more to learn there.

Editorial Review:

Internet Marketing: Integrating Online and Offline Strategies asserts that while the Internet is a transformational innovation, pure Internet firms do not represent the future of the Internet, as failures in recent history attest. This text builds upon the fact that the future of the Internet lies in the activities of organizations large and small--in all market spaces--that use the Internet to improve service to customers and increase organizational productivity. Many powerful e-marketers predate the Internet, have strong brand identities, and use the Internet wisely to broaden the set of options, across the marketing and logistics mix that they can offer to their customers, suppliers, and partners. The underlying paradigm in the text visualizes the Internet as a significant new channel for communications and transactions that needs to be integrated into enterprise marketing strategies. In this process, businesses are transformed from isolated entities into extended enterprises-organizations whose boundaries have become permeable, admitting both suppliers and customers into many parts of the corporate information repository and requiring their participation in many aspects of daily operations.
