Great Overview of iPod & iTunes 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is the second edition of this series that I have bought. The Dummies series is excellent for their easy to read, fun and informative explanations of tech subjects. Although I am a tech geek, I do enjoy this series for coverage of little know features in iTunes. Apple does a great job on its products, but doesn't give a lot of information on using them. I was looking to buy my first iPod and I love the coverage of each of the iPod family, their features and how they work with iTunes. This is the new edition of this series, but it was published before the latest change to iPods and iTunes came out. They should be covered in the next version. Therefore you will not see any coverage if the 2nd generation iPod Touches or iPhones and iTunes 8 with the Genius feature and App Store. Some of the preferences were changed in iTunes, but otherwise you can still find most of the settings and features mentioned. There are step by step instructions for how to set up accounts and use the iTunes store to your liking and syncing your iPod and/or iPhone. The suggestions for music listed in the book constantly relate to the sixties. That could be left out, I do not like it when authors try to tell you what music to listen to. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because some of the more in-depth explanations and information found in previous editions were left out of this book and placed on a companion website, free to purchasers of the book.

Editorial Review:

Make the most of iPods and iTunes with this updated guide to the latest models and enhancements. You'll learn about everything from buying music and videos, importing music, and burning CDs to setting up play lists, transferring and viewing photos, adding podcasts, maintaining battery life, and synchronizing information. Good Introduction 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent book for those who know little or nothing about web analytics.
It explains the what and the why of web analytics. It then does a good job of discussing software. The pros and cons of each without any bias.
I am already using Awstats, a server side analytics tool, and still learned a few things. It also covers Google analytics, which is free and a very valuable tool for any website.

Trading systems that confuse 2 out of 5 stars.
19 of 24 people found this review helpful.

If you're building a computer based trading system, this title offers some interesting insight. There are several example trading systems that implement commonly used system features, and these systems are analyzed and commented on. But this is far from a blueprint--the methods used are too rough to actually use as defined, and the descriptions are very confusing in many places. Included TradeStation code is a bit easier than most to understand, but that's not saying much. Every time I read this book, I feel like my time would be better spent reviewing Conway & Behle's "Professional Stock Trading: System Design and Automation", which covers much of the same material but with considerably more coherance.

Editorial Review:

Today’s computer trading programs can be a godsend to traders looking for an extra edge. They can also be filled with dangerous—and expensive—pitfalls for the uninitiated. Trading Systems That Work reviews and analyzes today’s major software programs, and helps traders determine which will work best for their personal trading style and habits—and which could actually work against them. Emphasizing Tradestation and Excel (the two most popular software trading programs), this valuable guidebook covers all aspects of building, understanding, and evaluating a system. Traders will keep Trading Systems That Work handy for its: *Clear, step-by-step assistance with intricate systems *Techniques to evaluate the true performance of any system

Editorial Review:

Those who can ignore the rather garish cover on this book will find a solid, straightforward guide to making winning trades in even the most bearish of markets. The author, who millions of insomniacs know through his middle-of-the-night infomercials, writes with a highly personal voice that some may find a bit grating, but his rags-to-riches story is compelling and needs to be told.

In a nutshell, Michael Parness went from living on a park bench in Brooklyn to a summa cum laude degree from Hunter College in New York City to founding a successful sports memorabilia company. After making $150,000 in that business, he followed his broker's advice in 1998 and ended up losing virtually his entire nest egg. Since then, he has invested carefully after studying media reports and understanding "market psychology." Now a broker-averse multimillionaire, he shares with readers a number of strategies that have worked for him in both bull and bear markets.

Augmented with exercises that truly help readers determine their own level of risk aversion, this guide shows online traders and, particularly, investment clubs exactly how market psychology drives daily and cyclical market moves. As Parness says, "I'm not mechanical, and I'm not good at figuring out technical stuff like computers or plumbing or chain saws, but I can figure out how things measure up in terms of probability. And probability is what trading is all about."

A few too many ka-chingos and wowsas mar an otherwise informed writing style, but nevertheless the book offers some excellent insight into how the market actually works, and how one can make money using that insight. Those looking for a serious study of economic trends and forecasts may want to look elsewhere, but readers interested in a breezy, anecdotal read about market bubbles and bursts will be entertained and more than likely enlightened. --Charles Decker

New to eBay? 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is well-written and full of helpful hints for the person who is new to eBay or just getting started. The information is pretty basic, but you do find some "gems", too. This particular edition (2004) is only helpful to a point since eBay recently made some sweeping changes to its policies. For the right price, it's a good buy. But, if you want current information, buy the newer version.

Editorial Review:

You already know eBay basics. Now you'd like to go beyond with shortcuts, tricks, and tips that let you work smarter and faster. And because you learn more easily when someone shows you how, this is the book for you. Inside, you'll find clear, illustrated instructions for 120 tasks that reveal cool secrets, teach timesaving tricks, and explain great tips guaranteed to make your eBay experience more productive.

A good way to learn what web services are 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

To learn how to build and use web services, you first must determine what they are and how they differ from current technologies used in the development and use of web pages. With the exception of being based on eXtensible Markup Language (XML), they are only different in degree from widely used web technologies such as Active Server Pages (ASPs) and Java Server Pages (JSPs).
The authors do a good job of explaining what web services are and how they differ from other technologies. They also do not fall victim to the evangelical bug, being very explicit in pointing out the disadvantages of web services as well as the advantages as a chapter is devoted to each point. Another chapter is devoted to comparing how web services differ from other technologies such as ASPs, JSPs, Common Gateway Interface (CGI), Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and Java Remote Method Invocation (RMI).
The middle section of the book is devoted to describing the architecture of web services , the basics of XML, how web services communicate using XML and Simple Object Access Prototcol (SOAP), how web services are described using Web Services Description Language (WSDL), and how to advertise a web service using Universal Description , Discovery and Integration (UDDI). While not detailed, it is a complete introduction to all of the steps you must go through to create a complete web service that others can use.
The third section is devoted to describing several tools that can be used to build web services. Commercial tools such as Apache Axis, Java, .NET, IBM Websphere and BEA Weblogic are covered and the authors are to be commended in also showing how they can be built using inexpensive and free toolkits. Finally, the last section covers topics such as the interoperability of web services, how security is included in web services and what some of the future trends in web services may be.
This book is an introduction to web services, so it is not possible to learn all of the specifics you need to build complex web services from it. However, if you are a beginner, there is enough information to get you started and to help you make decisions concerning whether you want to start building them.

Editorial Review:

According to recent press reports, everyone is developing Web Services, but many are still in the exploratory phase - learning what's involved and how to achieve ROI. This book is designed to give a working introduction to Web Services to help decision-makers prepare for the implementation in their companies. It demystifies the topic by providing a beginning level explanation of what this technology is, what it means to businesses, where to apply it, and how to make it work.

Using numerous simple examples, the book explains the core concepts of Web Services: SOAP, UDDI, and WSDL, as well as tools and related concepts that will help create the "big picture" in readers' minds.
