Perfect for all kinds of content management needs 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I am working with a company to design and manage their new CMS system, and this book really got me off on the right foot. I was actually quite surprised how detailed, specific and up-to-date the book was.

Also, the author writes with the insight of someone who has worked for a long time in the industry. He'll make a little comment about how committees get things done, what management likes to see in a project proposal, how projects get stuck in the red tape, etc. and it would spark a memories of things that have actually happened to me. "Yes," I would think, "Committees DO have that problem!"

Chapter by chapter, the book walks you through the nuts and bolts of content management - what it is, why you need it, etc. It covers issues such as:

- If you're buying a pre-built CMS, what steps you should go through to ensure you're getting the right system.

- How to step through the many hurdles of management to get buy-in and to get the right product.

- If you're building your own CMS, how you should build the product plan, which features you should look at, what kind of staff you should have, etc.

- There is also a great chapter on why you should format your data with XML (which I was very happy to find as I am a big believer in XML).

- He also discusses choosing hardware, implementing the system, etc.

- And, lastly, he goes through different data types and specific features that you need or should know about (such as author permissions and metadata).

I was extremely happy with this book and definitely recommend it to anyone charged with planning or implementing a CMS.

Editorial Review:

As the Information Age dawns, the information at our disposal expands haphazardly. The Content Management Bible answers these key questions about the system readers might employ to control the expansion of information and organize targeting and distribution:
  • What does a system that handles massive amounts of information look like, and how can a single system produce a wide range of well-targeted custom publications from the same information base?
  • How can a system be created that understands each piece of information and how do I transform content to fit the various distribution methods such as web, print, handhelds and others?
  • What are the steps and processes you need to create such a system, and how can this system serve an organization's overall business goals and future initiatives?

Life after Ebay, but don't leave them out 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book after being suspended from EBay after being a member since 1999, a powerseller, and with a rating of over 5,000. I learned an expensive lesson and gathered great infomation due to suspension, but especially form this book. I'd recomend every Ebayer and anyone wishing to sell online to purchase this book. As I said I've been an EBayer since 1999, and learned so much from this book. I have been re-instated on EBay and this book and my suspension has given many tips, and information that has also helped changed the way I will things from now on. At 1st I was so angry at EBay that I had inquired about Amazon, Yahoo, Craigs list to name a few of other popular auction sites, I even started the process to open one with Amzazon, and will probaly eventually be listing on this site as well as others. I learned you can't put all you eggs in one basket, always needing a back up plan, and must always follow rules, read and understand policies, and make sure to always be up to date all the time. I opened my own web-site which I probaly would have never done if it wasn't for the suspension and this book. After reading this book I read that many other sellers of EBay have opened their own web-site, but many have also kept a presence with EBay, because they are the largest and most popular online site of its kind, no one even comes close.I'm continuing my reading of this book and have already highly recomended it to others. What would happen if EBay did not exist anymore? EBay fees just went up again, to some as high as 33%. It is and has become extrmely differcult to make money online, so it is important to do your homework to be successful. Before my EBay site went down I had been paying monthly fees of around $700 and at the rate I was listing that amount would have easily gone much higher. Now I have decided that I will have auctions in several areas, and sites, but most of all have my site up and it will soon become profitable. The money I was paying for fees, by splitting it up to mantain a web-site easily makes it work. I have learned all this and much more from this book, every reader will get something from this book, and for many it may change your life for the better. So I highly recomend this book to all and can't wait for an

There's more than one way to sell online, and for savvy sellers who want to build on their eBay success or are dissatisfied with eBay, this book offers powerful strategies for targeting not just more buyers, but the right buyers. By taking advantage of specialty sites, other auction sites, and online storefronts, sellers can dramatically increase their profits, and "Selling Beyond eBay" shows them how, step by step.

The Bible: by Bill Gates. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have been a software engineer for over 10 years now and have been a paperless office evangelist from the get go. Bill Gates takes you not only into the inner workings of his passion, the "Digital Nervous System" but also some of the inner workings of Microsoft® and the business model of Dell® computers.

I love Microsoft® and their technologies and I have read everyhting that I can possibly get my hands on from Bill Gates and by far this is the best. It doesn't matter if you're pro Gates or not, this book is not technology specific. It's about having the ability to make good and bad news travel quickly into the decision makers hands in an effort to become pro-active rather than re-active. I have been preaching this for years.

I keep a copy with me at work and talk about it to anyone who will listen and if you're a technology evangelist as well this is a MUST have for your library.

Now, if I can only get Bill to sign it...

Editorial Review:

Argues that the capabilities of computers, software, and networks are only beginning to be harnessed, and that companies must start building a modern, digital nervous system now in order to compete quickly and intuitively in the new millennium. Explains how to turn hardware and software into an evolving network of information. Softcover.

A must for Content Management projects 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book is an absolute must for Content Management projects. It touches all of the important aspects: Technical, functional and process. There is something for all stakeholders in a EMS/CMS project.

Especially good about this book is that the parts that are not your direct job are still very readable, understandable and interesting. It provides valuable insights in other peoples jobs and reasoning.

Coming from the technical side and with a lot of experience in setting up systems and also information architecture and DTD design, for me this book contained several new insights and some very helpfull checklists.

I am in the middel of a CMS project now, but I wish I had read it sooner.

When Pierre Omidyar launched a clunky website from a spare bedroom over Labor Day weekend of 1995, he wanted to see if he could use the Internet to create a perfect market. He never guessed his old-computer-parts and Beanie Baby exchange would revolutionize the world of commerce. Now, Adam Cohen, the only journalist ever to get full access to the company, tells the remarkable story of eBay's rise. He describes how eBay built the most passionate community ever to form in cyberspace and forged a business that triumphed over larger, better-funded rivals. And he explores the ever-widening array of enlistees in the eBay revolution, from a stay-at-home mom who had to rent a warehouse for her thriving business selling bubble-wrap on eBay to the young MBA who started eBay Motors (which within months of its launch was on track to sell $1 billion in cars a year), to collectors nervously bidding thousands of dollars on antique clothing-irons.Adam Cohens fascinating look inside eBay is essential reading for anyone trying to figure out what's next. If you want to truly understand the Internet economy, THE PERFECT STORE is indispensable.
