Very relevant combination in IT today.. 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I work with a lot of school leavers and people outside IT and often have to advise them on how to empower themselves in IT in the right way. Surely SQL and databases are one of the first topics people should understand. HTML was also high on the list. With this book, the author has combined all of them in one making it a very relevant combination for today's beginner. I will recommend this book to school leavers, financial people and people outside IT wanting to empower themselves quickly. Another great advantage of XML and databases is the platform independence. Very well done to the author for combining these topics at the entry level in such an easiliy understandable way!

Editorial Review:

  • Supported by all major database systems, XML provides an easy, standardized method of transferring data between databases and to and from the Web, independent of the software in use
  • Offers database programmers and data-driven Web developers detailed guidance on how to understand and work with XML as data
  • Numerous hands-on, step-by-step examples help readers learn to simplify database work using XML
  • Shows how to use XML to exchange data between multiple databases either internally or with external customers and partners
  • Covers XML in popular databases including Oracle Database, SQL Server, and brief coverage of DB2 Database
  • Covers basic syntax for XML, the XML DOM, and XSL – with an emphasis on database use, and native XML databases

Fantastic book for intermediate-advanced users 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is not the book for beginners. But this is the book for users who have a good foundation with the basics of Access- forms, reports, and queries- and want to learn how to use VBA to improve their database. I'm working on a project where I need to reprogram many aspects of the database, and this book has been invaluable. I have plenty of Access books for reference, but this book is the secret weapon for Access programmers.

Editorial Review:

This book is designed to take Microsoft Access users to the next step—programming. Its five parts cover an intro-duction to VBA programming, manipulating databases with ADO, using DDL, event programming, and using ASP and XML. With more than 300 hands-on examples and 11 custom projects, users can quickly build the toolset required for developing their own database solutions.

Learn How To: * Write and debug your programming code with the Visual Basic Editor. * Understand and use common VBA programming structures such as conditions, loops, arrays, and collections. * Create and manage databases with ActiveX Data Objects (ADO). * Perform database tasks with Jet/Access Structured Query Language (SQL) and its Data Definition Language (DDL) component. * Query and manipulate your database from a web browser with Active Server Pages (ASP). * Export and import Access data to and from XML both manually and programmatically.

Editorial Review:

The Visual QuickStart Guide series from Peachpit Press is known for boiling topics down to the essentials, and presenting them in an engaging and efficient way, to get the reader up to speed quickly. In applying this model to XML, author Elizabeth Castro had her work cut out for her.

Fortunately for her readers, Castro has identified successfully the core components of XML, and presented them in a streamlined way. This book doesn't tackle any of the advanced elements of XML technology, such as SOAP, SAX, or integration with the Document Object Model (DOM). Instead, it focuses on teaching the basic nuts and bolts of creating XML documents, styling them, and defining their structure.

This book moves at a fast pace. Document Type Definitions (DTDs), for instance, get only 30 pages of coverage. This tight format comprises simple examples that illustrate commands and concepts, instead of pages of text. The pages are presented in a two-column format, so that code fragments can be placed (wisely) side by side with the step-by-step explanatory text. Each topic example is supplemented with one or more useful implementation tips.

For a true grasp of XML and all of its potential, you'll need to follow up this introductory tutorial with more reading on the applications of the technology and case studies. But this little book is a great way to learn the basics of XML in a weekend. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered:

  • XML documents
  • Document Type Definitions (DTDs)
  • Schemas
  • Namespaces
  • XSLT and XPath
  • Cascading style sheets (CSS)
  • XLink
  • XPointer

Awful as reference 2 out of 5 stars.
17 of 24 people found this review helpful.

Since all other reviews are very positive, I'm here to offer a different opinion.

I've had this book for over a year now, and I barely use it. Each time I attempt to find something useful in it, the information is scattered over the entire book making it extremely difficult to understand.

For example, right now I'm looking up the "ref" attribute, and according to the index, it appears on 7 different locations throughout the book, each portion shorter than 1 page. Also, I have seen many tables scattered throughout with exact same information, or one or two differing field values, making it very confusing to understand which table is doing what.

And at over 500 pages long, there is a large amount of filler information in this book.

Is this book "definitive"? It looks like it is. Is this book usable? Absolutely not. This is one of the worst investments I've made in computer books.

And there is a place about strings in the book where it differs from the official W3C specs.

Editorial Review:

SQL Server developers worldwide raved about Ken Henderson's The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL: its exceptionally clear, conversational explanations, and its powerfully useful projects and code examples. This book helps SQL Server developers take the next step -- building more powerful, robust applications than ever before. Henderson identifies several key areas of SQL Server development that offer the greatest power -- and then covers each of them in exceptional detail. The book includes especially thorough coverage of Transact-SQL stored procedure programming, including features such as extended procedures, database design, and XML that are often disregarded in competitive books. Henderson introduces a method he has developed to add arrays to T-SQL, something previously thought impossible. He offers an ideal balance of theory and code, gradually building on basic techniques to create increasingly sophisticated solutions, and teaching the philosophy of Transact-SQL programming alongside syntax and technique. An accompanying CD-ROM includes extensive source code, including valuable proprietary code that makes T-SQL queries run faster. For every SQL Server developer.

Editorial Review:

If you need to create or use formal descriptions of XML vocabularies, the W3C's XML Schema offers a powerful set of tools for defining acceptable document structures and content. An alternative to DTDs as the way to describe and validate data in an XML environment, XML Schema enables developers to create precise descriptions with a richer set of datatypes?such as booleans, numbers, currencies, dates and times?that are essential for today's applications.

Schemas are powerful, but that power comes with substantial complexity. This concise book explains the ins and outs of XML Schema, including design choices, best practices, and limitations. Particularly valuable are discussions of how the type structures fit with existing database and object-oriented program contexts. With XML Schema, you can define acceptable content models and annotate those models with additional type information, making them more readily bound to programs and objects. Schemas combine the easy interchange of text-based XML with the more stringent requirements of data exchange, and make it easier to validate documents based on namespaces.

You?ll find plenty of examples in this book that demonstrate the details necessary for precise vocabulary definitions. Topics include:

Foundations of XML Schema syntax

Flat, "russian-doll," and other schema approaches

Working with simple and complex types in a variety of contexts

The built-in datatypes provided by XML Schema

Using facets to extend datatypes, including regular expression-based patterns

Using keys and uniqueness rules to limit how and where information may appear

Creating extensible schemas and managing extensibility

Documentingschemas and extending XML Schema capabilities through annotations

In addition to the explanatory content, "XML Schema"provides a complete reference to all parts of both the XML Schema Structures and XML Schema Datatypes specifications, as well as a glossary. Appendices explore the relationships between XML Schema and other tools for describing document structures, including DTDs, RELAX NG, and Schematron, as well as work in progress at the W3C to more tightly integrate XML Schema with existing specifications.

No matter how you intend to use XML Schema - for data structures or document structures, for standalone documents or part of SOAP transactions, for documentation, validation, or data binding ? all the foundations you need are outlined in "XML Schema,"

Great Books - Excellent for Access VBA Work 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

If you are looking for a book to learn basics of Microsoft Access then you are looking at the wrong book. If you want to impress your boss with Access Macros, it is again a wrong book.
It is however an excellent book that covers the whole nine-yard of Microsoft Access VBA development. It starts out directly into basics of Modules and Visual Basic Editor environment. Takes you quickly through basics of VBA. This is followed by details on how you can use VBA on MS Access Database (and on other external databases through MS Access). Book lives up to its title, it is loaded with excellent examples of VBA code. I read through some of the other Access VBA books before getting this book and on side-by-side comparison; this book stands out in depth, examples and detail.

Editorial Review:

The 2007 release of Microsoft Office Access comes with many changes to the user interface and the database engine. Novice users, power users, and developers, all have been given a myriad of new and improved tools and resources for their database needs. This book is the only by example programming guide to the best-selling Microsoft Office Access database. Unlike other books currently on the market, it's written specifically to address the needs of Access power users who are ready to make the jump into programming.

examples and rest of book do not correlate. 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Just been thru Chapter 1 - what is in the book and the snippets of the code that follow do not correlate. This is just like a developer code, wrote something and threw it across the wall for testing, never matters if the code matches requirements or not.

You Need this Book 4 out of 5 stars.

If you are considering using XML in SQL Server 2005, this book will pay for itself quickly. The clear examples of creating XML Schema collections, altering them, etc. are very helpful.

The only problem with this book is that SQL Server 2005 does not fully support XML Schemas. Because this book was written using a beta product (I believe) perhaps the author could not have know exactly how the final version would shake out. However, partial support of standards is important to any developer. You often find out only by trial and error what is supported and what isn't. The Wrox web site offers nothing of the kind for this book. So buy this book, but be aware if you are using complex XML Schemas there may be some surprises (e.g., notation not supported).

Editorial Review:

  • Discusses SQL Server 2005 XML from the server and client sides
  • Examines using XSLT to render the XML data that is retrieved from SQL Server, particularly for ASP.NET
  • Addresses SQL Server relationship with schemas, SOAP, XML security, and .NET
  • Makes extensive use of examples to solve problems that programmers face on an everyday basis and features Server 2005 XML best practices

Editorial Review:

XML has become the lingua franca for representing business data, for exchanging information between business partners and applications, and for adding structure-
and sometimes meaning-to text-based documents. XML offers some special challenges and opportunities in the area of search: querying XML can produce very precise, fine-grained results, if you know how to express and execute those queries.

For software developers and systems architects: this book teaches the most useful approaches to querying XML documents and repositories. This book will also help managers and project leaders grasp how "querying XML" fits into the larger context of querying and XML. Querying XML provides a comprehensive background from fundamental concepts (What is XML?) to data models (the Infoset, PSVI, XQuery Data Model), to APIs (querying XML from SQL or Java) and more.

* Presents the concepts clearly, and demonstrates them with illustrations and examples; offers a thorough mastery of the subject area in a single book.
* Provides comprehensive coverage of XML query languages, and the concepts needed to understand them completely (such as the XQuery Data Model).
* Shows how to query XML documents and data using: XPath (the XML Path Language); XQuery, soon to be the new W3C Recommendation for querying XML; XQuery's companion XQueryX; and SQL, featuring the SQL/XML
* Includes an extensive set of XQuery, XPath, SQL, Java, and other examples, with links to downloadable code and data samples.
