From the supplier: The success of any trade organization's adaptation to any significant change relies on the compliance of both the leaders and members to its implications. The degree of adaptation is closely related to the flexibility and agility of the organization to reinvent itself according to the new structure, process and culture brought by changes. These traits enable the group to take full advantage of available opportunities.

Description:
The study empirically explores the supply strategies of European manufacturing firms within the third edition of the International Manufacturing Strategy Survey. Four clusters are identified on the basis of the supplier selection criteria and the integration mechanisms adopted. Two clusters are similar to the Lean and the Agile models, while the other two are more traditional supply strategies, even if they present some advancement compared to the arm's-length supply model. The strategies are then described in terms of contingent and structural factors and manufacturing performance. Lean and Agile strategies outperform the other clusters on many dimensions, while no significant difference emerges between the two in terms of performance.

Editorial Review:

Traditional manufacturing systems rely upon centralized, hierarchical systems that are not responsive enough to the increasing demand for mass customization. Decentralized, or heterarchical, management systems using autonomous agents promise to nullify the limitations of previous solutions.

Agent-Based Manufacturing and Control Systems: New Agile Manufacturing Solutions for Achieving Peak Performance offers a survey of both the literature and the practical applications of this technology. Using a realistic example of a fictitious firm throughout, the book indicates when agent-based systems are appropriate, enumerates techniques to decompose a problem into entities that can be modeled as agents, provides a step-by-step guide to implementation, and offers hints for using simulation to design the system. The authors pay particular attention to object-oriented techniques and to the selection of appropriate tools and inter-agent communication standards, with specific reference to JADE middleware and FIPA framework.

Practical, applicative, and state-of-the-art, this text provides all the tools necessary for implementing an extremely flexible, robust, adaptive, and fault-tolerant manufacturing system. This is the perfect reference for AI researchers, industrial manufacturing engineers, operations researchers, and plant managers who wish to develop the most efficient manufacturing systems available.
