This is the one that the DBA wants 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I boought and read a couple of other IBM press books looking for this one. If you are a DBA or a wanna be BDA then this is the book that you want to read. I found the writting smooth and usefull. I did read a paragraph that was lifted almost directly from the IBM db2 administration guide. I have not made use of the cd yet nor have I taken the certification test so I can not comment on the works usefullness in those two areas.

I recomend this book to the DBA or the developer. I would not recommend this book to the nontechnical reader.

Editorial Review:

The Official Introduction to DB2 UDB for z/OS provides a comprehensive overview of Version 8 of the DB2 UDB for z/OS product. The book serves a dual purpose: it gives new and prospective users a solid introduction to key product features and it covers material contained in the DB2 Family Fundamental exam, the first exam in the DB2 certification series. The book explains basic relational database concepts, the basics of the structured query language (SQL), and gives a solid overview of the various user tasks that are associated with this product. It includes introductory information about designing databases, creating relational objects, managing DB2 on a day-to-day basis, and writing application programs that use DB2 data. It also introduces new users to some of the more complex capabilities of DB2, such as, DB2 in the Web environment, distributed data, and data sharing. Introductory book for the DB2 mainframe audience, parallels Baklarz audience (ISBN 0130463612). Well-written (The Society of Technical Communication recognized the first edition of this book with a Merit award in the Northern California Technical Communication Competition.) Most current coverage of Version 8 of DB2 UDB for z/OS, the single largest release of this product since its inception in 1983-- Includes 8.2

DB2: The Complete Reference (Review) 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Although this book covers allot of areas within UDB(DB2) "It is not a Complete Reference". Some areas missing include Bind, CLP, and other utility parameters. It also lacks information on writing scripts for the Script Center and using the Control Center. Also it does not contain all references to SQL statements, some key statements are missing. Other books will be needed for a database administrator or programmer to use UDB. If I would have had a chance to review this book before paying for, I would have saved myself some money.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Great Book. So much information in it that they couldn't fit it all in the paper book. Chapter 30 - DB2 Command Line Processor Commands must be downloaded from the Osborne web site. I always go to this book before I going to the manuals. Seldom do I have to look further.

Editorial Review:

DB2 is the number two database server next to Oracle and is a highly underpublished area. Written by two members of IBM's DB2 team, this title provides an inside and first look at this version. It should appeal to both administrators and developers as it provides comprehensive coverage.
