Essential to my success on Exam 512 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book made passing Exam 512 fairly easy. Books & classes from IBM do not focus on passing the exams, but this book does. During 10 yrs. of UNIX sys. admin. I'd done almost no database work. I passed Exam 512 after 3 weeks of concentrated effort. Week 1 - 2 classes: DB2 UDB Family Fundamentals (2 days) & DB2 UDB SQL Workshop (2 days). Weeks 2 & 3 - Read "DB2 Fundamentals Certification for Dummies" cover to cover. I answered every end of chap. question, did every lab and took the practice exams on the CD. I'd never sat for a certification test and this book made me very comfortable with the process. I passed Exam 513 three weeks later using a 4 day class, DB2 UDB Admin. Workshop, and "All-In-One DB2 Admininistration Exam Guide" in the same fashion. I highly recommend this book for passing Exam 512. I would not recommend it as a reference for DBAs.

This is the book I was waiting for long on DB2UDB. This not only covers topics for certifications but also good (very good) reference material for all UDB DBAs on LUW platform.

Absolutely the best DB2 book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I just found this book, and after reading it wish I had found this years ago. This is the most comprehensive book on DB2 that I have ever seen. This book has already saved me a lot of time. The performance chapter is great and helped me improve the performance of my DB2 server by over 30% in less than a week.

Editorial Review:

This book contains practice exams, plus detailed answers and explanations, covering every concept and technique for the advanced DBA Certification. Topics covered will include: advanced administration, high availability backup and recovery, performance tuning and scalability, networking and security, how to manage a large number of users and connections and large amounts of data, authentication, and encryption. People will need to pass the Fundamentals and DBA exams before they can take the Advanced DBA. IBM estimates that a large percentage of those who take the regular DBA exam will go on to seek Advanced DBA certification since the information covered with the Advanced DBA material will greatly improve their skills.

I feel that Mr. Ranade has done a great job by writing such a reader friendly book but i feel that a topic that needs a little bit more evaluation is the Field proc and the edit proc and how they can be applied on a table so that it facilitates the sorting of data according tothe user needs.

His explanations and advice assure that you'll handle your design and coding challenges with confidence and professional-level techniques. A book that tells you how to do it, not just how it works! 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 28 people found this review helpful.

Enough can't be said about the usefulness of this book. Rather than explain how things work in DB2, it gives great advice on making DB2 applications perform. We changed a few things that we were a little wrong about, and significantly changed how memory was being allocated (BP, EDM, etc.), and reduced I/O and achieved measureably more transaction throughtput. And we have only started going though all the information, about 680 pages of it. The chapters on Data Sharing really answered some questions that we didn't understand -- great info. Just wish this book had been around earlier.

Editorial Review:

Now, there's a comprehensive core book on DB2, including coverage of the not-yet-released Version 7 of DB2: its key characteristics, and how to tune it for maximum performance. Written by world-renowned DB2 consultants Richard Yevich and Susan Lawson -- and endorsed by DB2 Chief Architect Roger Miller -- this book delivers the most thorough, real-world optimization information ever published, for both developers and administrators. Coverage includes: DB2 high-performance design for both OLTP and OLAP applications; practical techniques for improving the efficiency of SQL; working with the DB2 Optimizer; DB2 data sharing implementation and performance; triggers, stored procedures, UDFs, and other advanced DB2 programming techniques; and specific coverage of optimizing data warehouses and enterprise applications.

Editorial Review:

The Business Intelligence space is one fraught with vendors, tools, and opinions of how best to implement BI solutions. This book addresses key areas of BI such as data structure and delivery, tools evaluation, and more. The subject areas are presented from the author's point of view and experiences. At the heart of the materials are points to ponder, food for thought, and significant errors to avoid. Business Intelligence is the conscious, methodical transformation of data from any and all data sources into new forms to provide information that is business driven and results oriented. It will often encompass a mixture of tools, databases, vendors in order to deliver an infrastructure that not only will deliver the initial solution, but it will incorporate the ability to change with the business and current marketplace. The purpose of investing in BI is to transform from an environment that is reactive to data to one that is proactive. A major goal of the solution will be to automate and integrate as many steps and functions as possible. Another goal is to provide data analytics that are as tool independent as possible.
