Editorial Review:

The Business Intelligence space is one fraught with vendors, tools, and opinions of how best to implement BI solutions. This book addresses key areas of BI such as data structure and delivery, tools evaluation, and more. The subject areas are presented from the author's point of view and experiences. At the heart of the materials are points to ponder, food for thought, and significant errors to avoid. Business Intelligence is the conscious, methodical transformation of data from any and all data sources into new forms to provide information that is business driven and results oriented. It will often encompass a mixture of tools, databases, vendors in order to deliver an infrastructure that not only will deliver the initial solution, but it will incorporate the ability to change with the business and current marketplace. The purpose of investing in BI is to transform from an environment that is reactive to data to one that is proactive. A major goal of the solution will be to automate and integrate as many steps and functions as possible. Another goal is to provide data analytics that are as tool independent as possible.

Editorial Review:

The DB2 for OS/390 Development for Performance book (985 pages) provides a practical, indepth guide to application design, development, and tuning with emphasis on ensuring good performance in a production environment. The book teaches proven techniques for tuning and developing application systems. It gives numerous hints, tips and guidelines on developing application systems to achieve high performance based upon the experience of the author and the input of over 14,000 DB2 professionals. These professionals from most major companies in 27 countries have attended the seminars upon which the book is based and contributed to the material since 1984.

An understanding of DB2 processing is required and conveyed so that you can apply the guidelines to your specific applications. Companies use DB2 in a variety of ways depending on their business requirements, the type of application systems to be designed and developed, tuning of existing applications, and on the organizational structure of the company. Therefore, a number of alternatives for dealing with issues are presented and analyzed in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. This allows you to choose the alternative that best fits your application system and environment. Test results are given to illustrate the magnitude of improvements that can be achieved by using many of the alternatives covered in the book.

An excellent introduction to embedded SQL for DB2 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

As a contract programmer, I can really appreciate a book that teaches new programming tools with a minimum of confusing, redundant, or unnecessary information. Steve Eckols' book "DB2 for the COBOL Programmer Part 1" certainly meets these standards.

If you are an experienced COBOL programmer with work experience using any DBMS, whether or not it is SQL based, this book will help you to become a productive DB2 programmer in a minimum amount of time.

Mr. Eckols has obviously put a great deal of thought into the book. It is organized in a straightforward manner. Most chapters end with a coding example that is kept simple to focus on the features introduced in that chapter.

In addition to the basics of SQL for DB2, this book also includes some of the possible problems and efficiency issues normally learned by trial and error.

I would highly recommend this book to all COBOL programmers who would like to learn DB2 (or SQL in general.)

Editorial Review:

Already know the basics of writing DB2 programs? There's still plenty to learn. Part 2 teaches you all the advanced features you're going to want to use as you continue working in DB2. From data manipulation to DB2 processing in CICS to dynamic SQL, this book boosts your DB2 skills...and serves as a quick reference when you're faced with new programming requirements.( 15 chapters, 393 pages, 164 illustrations)

Down to Details - Schlueter Review 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The author is excellent in explaining technical information concerning the DB2 product. However, as with all good reviews, the printed material did have some noticeable defects concerning the examples:
P. 187 EMP_ID name not in separate columns.
P. 198 Columns misalign question 8, review
P. 200 Columns misalign question 15, review
P. 219 'veiw' misspelled
P. 248 Select example using E.DEPTNO did not exist in the example, also the select statement should be a left instead of right outer join to bring back the result set in the example.
More to follow....

Editorial Review:

The more you know about Sybase/ASE, the easier it is to learn DB2 from this book. The author concentrates less on DB2 base tables (which are similar to Sybase tables) and more on other new table concepts such as materialized query tables, replicated summary tables and typed tables.

Editorial Review:

DB2 Universal Database (UDB) supports many different types of applications, on many different kinds of data, in many different software and hardware environments.

This book provides a complete guide to DB2 UDB Version 5 in all its aspects, including the interfaces that support end users, application developers, and database administrators. It is complementary to the IBM product documentation, providing a clear and informal explanation of how the features of DB2 were intended to be used. It is an extensive revision of the author's earlier book, Using the New DB2: IBM's Object-Relational Database System.

* Offers complete and self-contained information, and does not assume prior knowledge of DB2, SQL, or relational database concepts
* Covers elementary principles of database management as well as the advanced features of UDB, including recursive queries, constraints, triggers, user-defined datatypes, stored procedures, parallel databases, and graphical tools for database administration
* Includes dozens of practical tips that will save readers many hours of work in developing database applications
* Provides hundreds of tested examples written in SQL, C, C++, and Java, all of which are available on the MKP web site

Very helpful answers to DB2 family questions. 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 29 people found this review helpful.

If you have DB2 family questions, this book is very useful. I get asked thousands of questions every year, and this book includes many hundreds of the most common questions. I bought a copy to help me in answering the questions and recommend it to anyone who asks or answers questions on the DB2 family.

The book is very complementary to guide books, product libraries and "red books". It provides a broad perspective, concise answers and judgements that you'd expect from these top consultants. Their experience is evident in the book, if most customers did not recognize the names as top presenters at DB2 conferences, frequent magazine authors and key consultants on large, complicated projects.

This book provides great value for the money.

Editorial Review:

DB2 is IBM's enterprise database solution--with the current release, IBM is marketing it aggressively against Oracle and SQL Server. Bestselling Answers! books provide hundreds of tech support answers for less than the cost of one support call and are endorsed by Stream International, a leading tech support firm. The RYC group knows the questions DB2 users need answers to every day. Covers diverse topics from the basics of designing a DB2 database to migration and space management to disaster recovery, security, and data sharing.
