This book is passably written by an author who cares much more about concurrent applications than about java. Java is perhaps just a hook to get you to buy the book. Why spend chapters on semaphores when the language has native monitor support? The editing of this book, however, makes it nearly unreadable and unusable. The text regularly refers to "Class 2.5" or "Listing 3.4" (for example) yet none of the code listings are labeled, and may not be on the same page. You'll drive yourself nuts trying to figure out what he's talking about. Also, the text makes reference to code and listings that can only be found on the author's web page without explicitly stating this. Finally, is the first philosopher "Philosopher 1" or "Philosopher 0"? An editor should have picked this up and corrected it.

Editorial Review:

Concurrent Programming shows readers how to utilize the Java programming language to write programs that use semaphores, monitors, message passing, remote procedure calls, and the rendezvous for thread synchronization and communication. A Java algorithm animation package is also described.

Systolic processing is a technique for solving problems on a massively parallel computer architecture in a way that pumps information or data between processing elements in a regular and rhythmic pattern. This book is an introduction to the basic principles of systolic design, explaining what systolic algorithms are and showing how to design systolic arrays in a systematic way so that they meet certain design objectives such as area and time efficiency. Good book for both programmer and researcher 5 out of 5 stars.

Usually programmers get lost in parallel computing theory book, and researchers don't know how to teach their theory in reality.
So here is the perfect sample for one stone two birds on this subject. Basically it is book of PVM source code in C with commentary, very detail, very hands-on education.
The book is less than 400pp, souce code takes about 100pp, commentary takes about 100pp, another 200pp for background and theory.
If you have very strong coding experience and want to know some parallel programming, this book definitely is designed for you. Btw, source code is available on web.

This unique book develops the mathematics for showing
that an architecture obeys properties that may either be
assumed by naive programmers or prescribed in architecture
specifications. The book culminates in a series of tests
for multiprocessor memory system properties that have been
very useful in practice.
