Absolutely Gorgeous! A Surfer's dream! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I stumbled upon this gem of a book in a local bookshop. First of all, the design of the book is absolutely adorable and gorgeous! The book comes in a frosted case with a surf-board shape cut into it. Peter Wise's gorgeous paintings bring to life the art of surfing. Each painting is accompanied by an anecdote, poem, or reflection on surfing. Some of the contributors are famous surfer's, and some are just surf aficionados. This book is a great gift for a friend or family member who loves surfing and the whole surf lifestyle.

Editorial Review:

The ocean has always been a source of inspiration for surfers, beach lovers, and sailors alike. In Surf, artist Peter Wise pairs sixty of his evocative paintings of the surf with anecdotes from surf-lovers around the world-from professional surfing legends to surfing journalists to businessmen who are surfers at heart. These original paintings are sure to inspire anyone who understands surfing to be a metaphor of personal expression.

A very sad book to be sourced from a museum 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I knew this was a book about the life and career of Sarah Siddons, which I cared nothing for. I purchased the book solely for the advertised 56 portraits or Sarah, thinking it'd be a great treasure to be able to see and compare 56 portraits painted by different artists over her career.

I was so horribly disappointed that I can only suggest you run from this book if the works are of interest to you. Sure there are 50 color and 74 black and white illustrations, but most are thumbnails scattered through the text. There is 1 full page color portrait and 10 half page ones, the remainder are 1/4 page or smaller and most of these are full figure portraits so you can imagine how little detail they show.

If you're interested in Sarah Siddons' life and career then this may be an amazing book, I don't know since I didn't bother to read it. It's not worth buying for any other reason though.

I'd also add that if this is common to all Getty Trust publications I wouldn't purchase any more of them either.

Editorial Review:

Renowned for her majestic beauty and impassioned performances, the English actress Sarah Siddons (1755-1831) revolutionized the aesthetics of eighteenth-century theater while inventing a complex public persona to promote her fame. Her flair for self-presentation was matched by the showmanship of the many artists who portrayed her.
Here three lively essays--by Robyn Asleson, Shelley Bennett, Mark Leonard, and Shearer West--explore Siddons's life and career, as well as her relationships with a number of artists. Notable among them was Sir Joshua Reynolds, whose masterpiece Sarah Siddons as the Tragic Muse became an icon of this great actress at the peak of her career. This lavish volume also brings together fifty-five other portraits of Siddons including works by Thomas Gainsborough, George Romney, Thomas Lawrence, and Gilbert Stuart.

A stunning one-of-a-kind collection 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Simply put, this is a stunning collection of 35 watercolors of downy chicks, nestlings, and fledglings painted from life by one of the premier bird artists of the 20th century, George Miksch Sutton. The 19 species of North American birds, many reproduced here for the first time, are exquisite paintings standing alone but the highly readable, informative text by internationally renowned ornithologist Paul A. Johnsgard is both indispensable and helps make this a must-have, one-of-a-king bird lovers delight. The book is a steal at this price.

Editorial Review:

George Miksch Sutton is one of the best known and most beloved bird artists of the twentieth century. This marvelous book presents thirty-five paintings of downy chicks, nestlings, and fledglings painted from life by Sutton. The exquisite watercolors, housed in the Field Museum of Natural History, span three decades and depict nineteen species of North American birds. Many of the paintings are reproduced here for the first time.

In his introduction to the collection, ornithologist Paul Johnsgard discusses Sutton's contributions to bird art and to ornithology. And is essays accompanying the paintings, Johnsgard describes his and Sutton's personal encounters with the birds.

Editorial Review:

Pictures can tell a story and portray history in a unique manner. They provide ways of communicating that words cannot. This collection of paintings, drawings and sketches shows how well illustration can chronicle the past. They depict black army personnel at war, as war casualties, at prayer, in peacetime assignments, in training, at play and at leisure, and as military musicians.

From the Revolutionary War to the Persian Gulf War, this reference work is arranged chronologically. Information about the artwork include the title, the time period represented, the artist’s name, the year the piece was produced, the size and medium used, and where the original can be found is supplied for each artwork. A narrative accompanies each. Sections are concluded with a list of Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients from the war being portrayed. An appendix provides profiles of the artists whose work is represented.

Classic, practical, valuable 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This useful book may appear out of date but it's packed with information useful to any painter or photographer. For example, a head shot is compared in different lighting. An identical pose is framed and placed differently. The author even provides forms and professional practice advice that would be helpful to any new practitioner. The styles and dress of the pictures are dated, but the content never goes out of date.

One of the best on Portrait Painting 5 out of 5 stars.

Important business side of portrait is discussed. If you want to become a portrait painter. It has some invaluable information for portrait artists. It shows you how to set up the lighting and studio to optimize your work. It will show you what to do and how to handle the different situations you come across while working as portrait painter.

Editorial Review:

Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830) was the most gifted and successful British portrait painter in the generation following Gainsborough and Reynolds, and his pre-eminence was confirmed by his election as President of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1820. Yet Lawrence’s work has often been dismissed as flashy and meretricious. This beautifully illustrated, eloquently written, and comprehensive account reverses that view, demonstrating that Lawrence was an intelligent, hard-working, and profoundly conscientious artist.
The book is the first sustained study of Lawrence’s work in many years, and the first ever to look closely at his highly accomplished drawings as well as his paintings. Tracing the steps in his career, Michael Levey analyses and illustrates the finest of Lawrence’s achievements, making pertinent comparisons with the work of British contemporaries and with foreign artists like Goya and Ingres. Utilizing published and unpublished sources and focusing detailed attention on individual works, Levey presents a persuasive argument for reconsideration of Lawrence as an artist of the top rank.

Editorial Review:

For centuries, the art world was a male preserve. Exceptionally talented and ambitious women became successful artists, only to be written out of the history of Western art. But how have women really seen themselves? What can self-portraits tell us about the way women have lived and worked? This book examines the subject, revealing a vibrant, colourful but largely overlooked genre. The two earliest self-portraits come from 12th-century manuscripts in which nuns gaze at us across eight centuries. In 1630 Artemisia Gentileschi depicted herself powerfully as the very personification of painting. From Adelaide Labille-Guiard to Angelica Kauffmann, in the 18th century, women signalled in their different ways ambition, femininity and the artist's calling. In this century, growing freedom and awareness have allowed for an increasingly intimate self-scrutiny, in the work of such artists as Gwen John and Paula Modersohn-Becker. Frida Kahlo's "The Broken Column" of 1944, shows her confined by the steel that supports her damaged spine. Sarah Lucas portrays herself as a tough, masculine outsider in photographs such as "Self Portrait with Fish". And when Cindy Sherman explores identity by transforming herself, she poses the questions that all the women in this book have faced when they "see" themselves - and help all of us to see ourselves too.

Compelling art and essays. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a truly beautiful book, visually and philosophically. The essays are as powerful and surprising as the portraits. In many ways, it is an excellent source for inspiring the young, especially the serious college student. Like the marvelous television series " John Adams" it reveals the passion and commitment of our leaders in fighting for the good of our country.

we the people....... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

What a wonderful book: both in its spiritual and visual context. The portraits are unique, the essays compelling. Ms. McClancy, has through her unique talents, created a masterpiece in portraiture of those who stand for the American dream of opportunity for all and that this nation, under the guidance of the Democratic Principals, shall continue to serve as an umbrella of care for the people of the United States and a light for all the world.

Editorial Review:

A rare achievement in portrait painting, McClancy amplifies intense facial expression of some of America's most formidable legislators. The power of the paintings paired with a compelling written 'rendering' elevates the purpose and nobility of each subject.

Lee Hammond is the best I have ever seen (in book form). She goes into such detail to teach you how draw everything from eyes to noses to hair. She tells you what paper to use, what pencils, and how important it is to use good products. She is super! I believe that I now have every one of her books, with the exception of the animal ones, which I will get in the future! I HIGHLY recommend this book!

Editorial Review:

Presenting concise overviews of artists and movements that are uniquely American, these volumes distill the essence of their subjects with authoritative texts and lavish illustrations.

James McNeill Whistler was a rebel, dandy, wit, eccentric, and above all, an extraordinary artist. Here is a stunning visual portrait that traces the artist's career from early works to late, minimalist paintings.
